I think Gambo said something like the vets didn't like Davidson in spring training because he acted "entitled"

But I think any time the diamondbacks trade a player you can expect Gambo to say that the clubhouse was happy player x is gone.

So breaking this down as a playoff/extension of the Trumbo deal:

Arizona gets: Addison Reed, Mark Trumbo, talented prospects Brandon Jacobs and AJ Schugel

Arizona trades: Tyler Skaggs, Adam Eaton and Matt Davidson.

They paid a steep price in prospects for sure but got two young and accomplished Major Leaguers as well as a pair of enticing prospects in return. The former two are under real reasonable team controlled contracts for another three seasons.

I'm neither a staunch fighter of Kevin Towers nor a blatant hater but I think this is a pretty good off season so far. The prospect they got back for Bell is one I like too.

To update this for the Trumbo trade to Seattle...

Arizona gets: Addison Reed, Wellington Castillo, Dominic Leone, prospects AJ Schugel, Jack Reinhammer and Gabby Guerrero.

Arizona trades: Tyler Skaggs, Adam Eaton, Matt Davidson and Vidal Nuno.

Note - Brandon Jacobs was released and playing independent league baseball

Interesting that most liked the trade to get Reed.

I liked it at first because he was a 40 save guy at one time and we had been in need of a closer. Reed regressed exponentially the day he got here.

Regress or we just got to see him in person?

Regressed.

His ERA, home runs/9IP, WAR, and WHIP all got worse here.

Either way, he sucks and shouldn't be in The Show any longer.

Hmm, going back in this thread i can see why I should defer to 82 more often in evaluating trades and analyzing baseball performance…

He put quite the butt whipping on me here.

What happened to Matt Davidson? Hit .199 last year in AAA and is at .232 right now, but does have 13 HR. Looks like both guys flamed out.

Lest we forget, it was closer by committee in 2013 as the oldsters in the back of bullpen physically broke down.

Choosing Reed as our closer made sense . . . and it didn't work.

'Time to move on.

After re-reading this thread, I am surprised that nobody called out BC on the following statement:

There is no question, as most of our posters said, that a closer is singularly more important than a starter.

Why? A starter pitches 2/3 of once every five games. A closer is called on to save 3-out-of-every-4 victories for all of the starters.

Unless you're talking about a Randy Johnson-type starter, a good closer affects more wins than any one of a team's starters over the course of a season.

That becomes more obvious when your supposed closer is Addison Reed.

A closer usually throws for one inning, I do not remotely equate the work of a guy who throws 50-80 innings to a guy who throws 160-220 innings.

IMO a "closer" is one of the most overrated positions in all of sports. Countless team's have won titles without good closers, while winning the WS with without multiple top tier starters is extremely unlikely.

And, on a good team, the closer holds the lead for those starting pitchers and offenses who got them to the 9th inning.

Yes, we won it all with Byung-hyun Kim stinking it up in Games 3-4-5. And the two best starting pitchers in the league prevailing over that.

But I wouldn't want to plan a championship team that way. Just as the D-backs haven't repeated.

So, if your goal is to be the best-of-the-best, and build upon it, everything has to click.

Two outstanding starting pitchers at the top of the rotation.
An offense that can get clutch hits.
A good defense.

And, yes, a dependable closer.

I'm not saying closers are worthless, but there is no way they have even a fraction of the value of a good starter.

And we were not the first or last team to win without a good closer.

And the Dbacks have not repeated but I cannot think of one season where I'd peg that on our lack of a closer.

I made my point about closers earlier in this thread. I've not seen anything BC867 has stated that contradicts or negates that argument.

Case in point . . . today.

De La Rosa - 1 run in 7 innings

Hudson - 5 runs in 2/3 of an inning
for the blown save and the loss.

Hudson had the opportunity to save a win for De La Rosa.

De La Rosa did not have an opportunity to cover a loss by Hudson.

The game was in Hudson's hands.

Not only is one game not worth consideration when we're talking about hundreds of innings but Hudson was not even closing the game!!!

Add-A-Run Reed

Not pleased with the return of Reed to the bullpen to replace Delgado. He has good numbers in road games so he may be effective in Houston and Washington. Back home at Chase Field is another story.....
