A closer usually throws for one inning, I do not remotely equate the work of a guy who throws 50-80 innings to a guy who throws 160-220 innings.
And, on a good team, the closer holds the lead for those starting pitchers and offenses who got them to the 9th inning.
IMO a "closer" is one of the most overrated positions in all of sports. Countless team's have won titles without good closers, while winning the WS with without multiple top tier starters is extremely unlikely.
Yes, we won it all with Byung-hyun Kim stinking it up in Games 3-4-5. And the two best starting pitchers in the league prevailing over that.
But I wouldn't want to plan a championship team that way. Just as the D-backs haven't repeated.
So, if your goal is to be the best-of-the-best,
and build upon it, everything has to click.
Two outstanding starting pitchers at the top of the rotation.
An offense that can get clutch hits.
A good defense.
And, yes, a dependable closer.
