Lets as fans force the cards to draft matt jones to play te by posting, emailing
and calling in on talk radio. He will be a pro bowler at that position in 2 yrs. And then he will be a lock there for 5 to 6 yrs after that.HELP ME HELP US

Maybe in the 5th he would still be there. I don't think anyone is really going to pick hum until late. Maybe 4th round if he is lucky. He is big at 6'6 and fast at 4.40 for the 40, but still he just converted from QB to WR to TE. Anywhere in the third or up would be a mistake.

Does he even know how to block? Why waste a draft pick on a project unless its our 7th round.

He would be a good project type of pick. I think he goes third round because of his talent. If a team already has a good TE they can afford to draft him and let him learn the position for a year or two. Although I don't think he will be there in the fourth round, that is where I would take him.

in a mock draft it said the patriots would take him in the third, but now we have the pick and we should take him there, he could do alot of things for us.

He'll be the greatest QB drafted in the third round to play another position since the glory days of Scott Frost.

What do you mean "we", Kimo Sabe?

You're assuming that (a) there's this humongous bandwagon of support to draft a very large, very athetic former QB whose only experience at WR is one All Star Game and still another WR to our already overcrowded corps of receivers, (b) that an avalanche of fan pressure will sway Rod and Dennis and (c) that Rod and Dennis should set policy and base decisions on what "Vinnie from Mesa" wants rather than on their own professional judgment.

Suggest you trim you jib a little and just state your case for why you believe the Cards should draft Matt Jones - and leave it at that.

Matt Jones is really a hard one to figure in the draft. He is sort of the size of Tony Gonzales only much faster. He also played forward on the basketball team and ran the fastest time ever in the combine for a QB. Since school let out he has been working entirely on receiving. Jerry Jones is an ex Razorback and big supporter of the school so he has a real good handle on Matt Jones. I doubt he would ever get past round three with Dallas. This is a guy with a lot of "potential". He is hard nosed and on occasion would catch a pass for Arkansas. No doubt he can run the ball and can make people miss in the open field as he set the record for a running QB in the SEC. I am not sure I would label him a "project". I see him going no later than round 3 as he has to much speed, quickness, jumping ability and desire. If we have not filled our tight end position by round three he should be given a look at. I think he has a better than 50/50 chance of being a starting TE in the NFL and perhaps an outstanding one with his talent. He will not slip by to many of the NFL scouts. He just may not fill our need at #3.

Note: there is a difference between TE and WR.

TE is a need. WR is not.

Maybe a big WR or a Novecek type TE, but not a traditional TE. Those guys are now weighing in at 260+, and blocking (which Jones hasn't proved he can do or likes to do) is an important part of the job description.

3rd round, maybe. (In the old days, you might have a dynasty who could afford to gamble early on the potential talent of of a guy projected to a new position). But, this year, even the Patriots have roster holes to fill. I see Jones more likely to be drafted in the 4th or 5th round.

Thing is this guy is big enough and fast enough to play either. He is 242 now and could easily add 15 lbs if he wanted to. Is it a bad thing to be able to play either WR or TE or pitch the ball out to and let him throw a 60 yard pass? Seems to me a guy like this would present some big time cover problems as you are not sure how he will line up. As hard nosed and athletic as he is I suspect he will block and probably better than our current TE. When running and he gets near the endzone he does not run out of bounds. He dives over or into people. Nick Saban faced him for 4 years in the SEC at LSU and his comments were rather strong about Jones. I suspect the guys that want him are keeping quiet. He is one of those guys who could be an all pro or a bust and I think will go in rounds 2 - 4.

I agree. 3rd round would be a steal if we can get him aftre addressing rb and cb.

There are 2 things you cannot teach in football athleticism and speed. One of our third round picks would be ok.

Mike Tice played qb for Maryland and spent around 14 years in the NFL as a TE. Have no idea what round he was drafted.

He's definitely one of the more interesting prospects in this draft to keep track of in future years. Whether we draft him or not.

Why is he not even being considered as a QB in the NFL?

You can bet whoever drafts him will look at him at QB no matter what position he plays. He was a very good QB at Arkansas and set some SEC records. He is sort of written off as a QB by most but so were some of those 7th rd picks at QB who play now.
