Let me throw out two names familiar to all of us:

Kwamie Lassiter and Adrian Wilson

Both struggled immensely at safety their rookie season, but had solid second seasons and pro bowl careers with AZ. Rashad looked confused at times but is a decent tackler and is a bright kid. Hopefully he gets another chance in nickel and dime packages.

He also didn't break out right away in Alabama. The kid always seems to gain his footing then become a good player as time progresses.

I still have faith in him.

Matt Ware 6 year career stats - 106 tackles, 1 int, 3 FFs, zero sack, 7 passes defended

Dashon Goldson 2009 stats - 94 tackles, 4 ints, 3 FFs, 2 sacks, 6 passes defended

lol @ Goldson not better than Ware. Dude's a scrub so I called him a scrub. None of our fans wanted him and that's exactly what I said.
Hey goblow...Nobody wanted your input go back to your own board.

Comparing stats doesn't exactly tell the story. It's not really what he does (IE tackles, sacks etc) it what he allows other plays to do...his presence in the defense (in certain schemes) allows the coaches to use Adrian Wilson to take more chances, when he went out last season the Cardinals tried Ralph Brown in that role with decidedly bad results.

Ware is what he is, a role player...not a starter.

Exactly. Our nickel package was decidedly worse once Ware got hurt. Ware is the type of role player that all good teams need to have.

Francisco sucked period....yet another UDFA you latched on to. He obviosuly wasn't that important to the ST either considering our coverage teams improved in '09 compared to '08 (by about 5 yards a return).

I guess you are smarter than the Indianapolis Colts. Pat yourself on the back.

You know you are a Cardinal diehard when you contribute to a 5 page thread about Matt freaking Ware.

This was a depth signing, nothing less, nothing more. He's not the difference between the Super Bowl or a 6-10 record.

What he is, is a vet player who is part of the "program"

Can we stop talking about this now?

Recency bias my man. People were doing the same thing about Tim Hightower last year and he improved leaps and bounds this year and now you don't hear a peep out of those guys anymore.

In this 24/7/365 media cycle, fans are conditioned to want results immediately and don't see anything beyond the surface level. Context is not a qualilty for the majority of sports fans I fear.

I am not betting my house on Rashad Johnson being a Pro Bowler, but I ain't cutting him just yet either. Sheesh.

So, is what you are saying is this thread is starting to Ware on you?

Ware has been public enemy #1 on my list since that Giants game in 08 season, but if Whis thinks he is that important of a depth signing I'll buy it. (For now).

Well the Colts couldn't win the superbowl with Aaron Francisco, even with Peyton Manning to help him out, so obviously he was not the missing link :D

Hmmm and it's obvious that the Niners front office staff won't make a move unless the fans approve. Do they have polls going on your teams' sight so they can determine what the fans want them to do?

Yep he did awesome in Indy. He was the difference and the reason they made it back to the Super Bowl :sarcasm:

Heck he even managed 2 starts there (coincidentally the only 2 games they lost--and before you get all up in arms I am sure they didn't lose because of him).

Good teams make bad signings too.

Stats don't tell the whole story, especially with secondary players. If a dude has 4 picks and 6 passes defensed, that MAY be impressive. But it isn't if he is constantly picked on, and from what I've read Goldson may have the numbers but he wasn't exactly lights out as a player last year. Admittedly I watch only 2 Niners games, since I wish nothing but the worst for the Niners and their fans.

Why are you guys arguing with some troll about who is better, our 3rd or 4th (I am one of the few with hopes for Rashad Johnson still) best safety or their starting safety? HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE BETTER!!!! This is like saying "Who's better, Steve Breaston or Arnez Battle?" That the Niners fans even have this debate is sad in itself. He was signed to add depth and versatility to our secondary.

Good point, but I was mainly being facetious, and I'm well aware that isn't conveyed very well over the internet.

Fact of the matter is: The 49ers brought him EARLY in Free Agency, which means he is a targeted Free Agent, not an afterthought. Ware fills a valuable roster spot as a key sub for nickel and dime packages since he can cover and offers size.

And to counter Walter's point that he isn't a good ST player: The Cards have had quite a few good ST players that were horrible subs on defense. I'd rather have a guy who is only an adequate ST player and could fit in nicely in certain defensive packages, than a guy that can only play ST and offers nothing as a defender.

Some want to praise Matt Ware. Some bury him.

Friends, Romans, Cardinals fans, lend me your ears,
I come to bury Matt Ware, not to praise him.
The bad plays that men give up live after them;
The good are oft interred with their bones.
So we hope it shall not be with Matt Ware.
