Matthews fined for hit on Wilson

http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/201...ned-22k-block-russell-wilson-seattle-seahawks

Clay Matthews said he wasn't targeting Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson during a second-quarter interception return in Sunday's NFC Championship Game, but the Green Bay Packers linebacker was fined nonetheless.

The NFL docked Matthews $22,050 for an illegal blindside hit on Wilson.

"I was just blocking whoever and it turned out to be the quarterback and obviously calls are going to go in their direction whether it was a blind-side hit or whatever," Matthews said after the game. "I'm just looking to pick up a block and unfortunately that's just how the game played out."

Ridiculous, IMHO.

Once there is an interception, the QB is fair game and if he makes a football move - he is going to get hit, blocked, knocked down.

Furthermore, the real controversy shouldn't be in the AFC title game. Because it seems obvious to me that Russell Wilson got his bell rung hard enough then he was not performing normally through the first three quarters. Shouldn't he have had to go through the concussion protocol? I remember they were talking about it during the game so it obviously wasn't just me.

We had a cow when Warner got clocked, but since it's Wilson it's all cool.

He was clearly shaken yet he didn't have to go through to concussion protocol which would have kept him out of the game for a least a few minutes, I thought that was VERY VERY odd and shouldn't have been allowed by the rule!

My new rule proposal.

If a QB throws a pick;

1. That QB must hold up a red flag that will be installed as part of a QB uni
2. That same QB must run to the nearest out of bounds area while waving the red flag
3. If the QB fails to comply and attempts to remain in the play he becomes fair game and will be flagged and fined for non compliance.

:D

I wonder if they throw a flag if it's Cam Newton?....you know, the QB who will most likely make the tackle when he throws a pick.

Maybe they should make a rule for wussy QB's .... If you throw a pick, and don't want your bell rung, you sit Indian style promptly after the pick to indicate you're "out". :p

But is it fair to hit him helmet to helmet on a blindside block? At least when Warner got hit the guy didn't target his head. Way over the top and a great call by the officials IMO.

Helmet-to-helmet is an automatic personal foul. I guess the fine can be argued, but the flag can't.

I brought that up earlier in thread Hollywood and I agree its very odd no one has said anything about them basically ignoring the protocol so he could keep playing in the game. He was clearly shaken and it was a vicious hit to the head how its ignored is very odd!

BS penalty.NFL just protecting posterboy QB.Matthews was ducking his shoulder aiming for the chest.I see nothing wrong with the block. The helmets glanced off each other.I guess everybody would be happy if Mathews had hit Wilson knee level. How would that suit you all?

Yep. Helmet to helmet gets the call almost every time no matter who it is.

Also, looks like Matthews looked right at Wilson, lowered his head and hit him. Once he lowered his head he was going to be flagged if he hit Wilson with the helmet anywhere, let alone Wilson's head IMO.

they are close to the same height...if he goes lower then they would call holding for attempting to tackle him.

the NFL has become a game for sissies and prima donnas.....

lots of youngsters try and claim modern era players are bigger, stronger, and faster than the older guys and that may be true......

but if you took an all star team of todays players and put them against some random 1970's Steelers or Raiders team..........

the modern players would all be in the locker room by halftime while the old school fellas were drinking a beer on the sidelines laughing at what ******* these guys are...

not once,...not even twice.....but every time.
