He was run out of CLE for having one of the worst offenses in the entire NFL. But as a postional coach, I have no idea what to think of him.

Wow.. Great hire. Carthon got his bread and butter being a good HB coach.

As for having a lousy offense, the Browns didn't exactly stack the deck in his favor talentwise.

I have no opinion on this. There is no way for us to judge him.

here's the info:

Carthon served as the Lions offensive coordinator in 2002 after originally joining the team as the running backs coach in 2001. In his two seasons with the Lions, he took over a running game that had averaged 3.9 (2000) and 3.5 (1999) yards-per-carry before his arrival and was instrumental in overseeing those numbers increase to 4.0 in 2001 and 4.1 in 2002. In addition, running back James Stewart posted a career-best 4.8 yards-per-carry average in 2001 and then came back in 2002 to record his second career 1,000-yard rushing season with 1,021 yards on 231 carries (4.4 avg.).

Prior to joining the Lions, Carthon served as assistant head coach/running backs for the New York Jets in 2000, which followed three years (1997-99) as the Jets' running backs coach under Bill Parcells. During his time in New York, the Jets produced four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons from a running back after the franchise had experienced four 1,000-yard rushing seasons in its first 37-years of existence. Pro Bowl back Curtis Martin rushed for 1,204 yards - his sixth 1,000 yard rushing season - and nine touchdowns in 2000 after setting the team's single season rushing record with 1,464 yards in 1999. Martin also finished third on the team with 45 receptions for 259 yards in 1999. Under Carthon's direction, the Jets averaged 122.6 rushing yards-per-game, ranking seventh in the AFC and 12th in the NFL.

In 1998, Carthon worked two new starting backs in Keith Byars and Martin into the Jets' offensive scheme, helping Martin to 1,287 yards, his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard season and the second best rushing total in club history. The explosiveness of the Jets running game came to light against Indianapolis (9/20) when the club amassed 302 yards on the ground, the second best rushing total in a game in team history. Prior to the arrival of Martin, Carthon directed Adrian Murrell to become just the second running back in Jets history to have consecutive 1,000-yard seasons (Freeman McNeil, 1984-85), when he ran for 1,088 yards.

Carthon began his coaching career in New England in 1994 as an offensive assistant on Parcells' staff and shifted to coaching the Patriots' running backs and was a special teams assistant in '95. He became the sole running backs coach in '96. Carthon was partly responsible for the NFL's second highest scoring unit in 1996 (26.1 points-per-game) with New England. It was with the Patriots that Carthon first became strongly tied to the development of three-time Pro Bowler and current Jets' RB Curtis Martin. Carthon began working with Martin in 1995, a season which saw the unheralded third-round draft choice set single-season rushing records with 1,487 yards and 14 touchdowns on 368 carries and became the only rookie selected to play in the Pro Bowl while also garnering Rookie of the Year honors.

A veteran of eight NFL seasons as a player, Carthon began his career in 1985 when he signed with the New York Giants as a free agent. He played the next seven seasons with the team and was a key member of Parcells' 1986 and 1990 Giants Super Bowl championship teams as a punishing blocking fullback. He finished his NFL playing career with the Indianapolis Colts in 1992. Carthon never missed a game due to injury in his career, and he finished his playing days with 950 rushing yards and two touchdowns in 300 attempts and caught 90 passes for 745 yards and two touchdowns.

Prior to signing with the Giants, Carthon began his professional playing career as an eighth-round draft pick of the USFL's New Jersey Generals. He played for the Generals from 1983-85, rushing for 2,102 yards and helping pave the way for the league's leading rusher, Herschel Walker. In 1984, Carthon started all 18 games and finished the season with a career-high 1,042 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

Carthon twice earned all-Southland Conference honors while starring at Arkansas State and led the team in rushing with 682 yards as a senior team captain. He attended Osceola, Ark., High School and was named the state MVP in basketball and twice earned all-conference honors in football.

Born on April 24, 1961, in Chicago, Ill., Carthon earned his degree in physical education and science from Arkansas State and was honored as the Osceola Man of the Year in 1991.

Coming out of Osceola, Arkansas and Arkansas State and playing 8 yrs in the NFL is nothing to scoff at. Not very many have taken that path. Tells me he has a lot of grit. His coaching tenure looks to be pretty good for the most part. I guess it was in the article and i missed it but he was OC for the Cowboys for at least one year I think then he was let go. He has OC expericnce in the NFL. He could probably come up with a few good ideas on gameplans as well.

Sounds like he's had some good success both as a player and coach. I like that he was a fullback and surely he'll teach our guys a thing or two. Great hire in my book.

If true, I think Maurice is an excellent hire. I just worry with this hire, Grimm, and Haley that there are to many cooks in the kitchen. I know they all will bring a wealth of offensive knowledge to go along with wiz. I hope that this just strengthens our team and doesn't bold for too many opinions floating around on how to run the offense.

It sure as hell doesn't look like the Bidwill are being cheap while putting this coaching staff together.

A hot HC candidate and two former coordinators as position coaches...

I don't know what kind of a coach Maurice Carthon is, but just being around Bill Parcells should be a plus. Also, is he the only minority coach, that the Cardinals have hired? I didn't see a picture of the DB coach, but I believe all the rest are white. And when you consider that the vast majority of the team is not white, then that's not a good thing. There must be some very good black coaches out there. JMO.

Cardinals to name Carthon RBs coach

By Darren Urban, Tribune
January 28, 2007

The Cardinals will hire former NFL running back Maurice Carthon as their running backs coach, an NFL source confirmed Saturday, no surprise since both Carthon and new offensive coordinator Todd Haley were developed under ex-Cowboys coach Bill Parcells.

Haley worked with Carthon on the Cowboys’ staff during the 2004 season.

Carthon last worked in Cleveland as offensive coordinator, when he resigned under heavy pressure six games into the 2006 season

Carthon played fullback for Parcells with the New York Giants, and worked under Parcells on the staffs of the Cowboys, New York Jets and New England Patriots.

New coach Ken Whisenhunt remains in the process of filling out his first staff in Arizona. He had said he didn’t want to hire many offensive assistants until he had brought in a coordinator. Haley wasn’t hired until Thursday.

The Cards still are looking to fill coaching slots for quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends, as well as the defensive line.

I can't recall any specifics, but - living in the NYC - NJ area - I had the opportunity to see Carthon a lot as a tough, gritty player with the Giants and remember a lot of good things being said about his personal qualities when he was hired as an assistant by Parcells.

When you consider the Parcells and Cowher roots of many of our coaches, you definitely get the feeling that Rod Graves and the Bidwills concluded that more toughness and a better work ethic needed to be added to the mix.

A word of caution - A lot of different things influence the personality of a football team. In our zeal to become tougher and more disciplined, I hope we don't forget that our current offensive roster has been put together within more of a "greatest show on turf" framework. "It is what it is", and I've got to hope that Whisenhunt's reputation for creative play calling will prevent us from "becoming what we're not" - a plodding, boring (though tough) football team.

(But then again, if this means turning us into a winning football team, there's nothing wrong with that).

When the Cards past record is taken into account in hiring minorities, they have the best minority hiring rate in the league, then it isnt a big deal.

I dont think Wiz or any of his other coaches will try fitting square pegs into round holes. He has said it many times and i believe him. Wiz is a creative guy and I have no doubt he will still call a game to be "the greatest show on turf", but he will do it like no other "greatest show on turf" has ever done it before, he will do it with attitude and aggression. Think of a pass priented team that can also pound it, not one or the other, but both.

Where I think this new way tougher, way more agressive, and way more disciplined coaches may be a problem especially the first year, is that 90% of our team is not used to that coaching style. They are all used to and happy with the laid back coaching styles of Dennis Green and his old staff. There is going to be a huge culture shock for most of them and I can see a lot of butting heads the first year, maybe even a few surprising cuts becuase a player or two just dont buy into it. How do you think these coaches would have delt with the Dansby fiasco last offseason?

I can't believe what a staff Whiz is putting together. Carthon is a great hire. He had zero chance to be successful with that offensive personnell in Cleveland and was kind of made to be a scapegoat by the media.Right now we probably have, not probably DO, have the best staff on the offensive side of the ball in the NFL. You have to give the front office, along with Whiz, for getting these guys in here. Whiz was arguably the #1 HC candidate out there. Grimm was right there with him. We now have the top OL coach, a top RB coach, and Haley who was a among the best WR coaches. For Carthon to ascend to a coordinator role so quickly shows that he is a very good coach. If we get Shurmur in at QB coach it's just a bonus. Also, you don't have to worry about too many chiefs. Whiz looks like a guy that will let everyone know what their role is and make it clear that he is in charge.

i believe between us we have between 80-100 years of suffering, rooting for the chicago/stl/phoenix/az cardinals...wouldn't it be nice for awhile to say "oh hum, another 200 yard rushing, 170 yard passing error free victory and average between 9-11 wins a year!!! i am glad you answered your own question....

...oh by the way on channel five here (nbc) the bears are getting on the plane off to miami....hopefully one of these days (years) that will be us!!!
