McClellan out for season after wrist surgery

Arizona guard Jawann McClellan’s season to forget ended nearly before it started.
McClellan will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his left, non-shooting wrist Thursday, prompting UA coach Lute Olson to yank freshman Fendi Onobun out of a redshirt season.
McClellan injured the wrist while driving to the basket on Saturday at Oregon in just his second game of the season after a long battle with academic ineligibility.
McClellan played five minutes in the second half of the Oregon game, and iced it down afterward, indicating it was not a major problem. But the injury flared up and he had an MRI on Tuesday, then underwent the surgery on Thursday.
UA coach Lute Olson was not available to comment on McClellan’s injury before Thursday’s game with Stanford. McClellan attended Thursday’s game in street clothes, wearing a sling and cast over the wrist.
McClellan played on only the two games at Oregon State and Oregon last week, scoring eight points at Oregon State but none against the Ducks. He was being counted on to provide toughness and outside shooting for the worst-shooting three-point shooting team (40.7 percent entering Thursday’s game) in the Pac-10.
McClellan was academically ineligible since last summer, after he dropped a math course following his father’s sudden death in June. He pursued two unsuccessful appeals to be reinstated, and Olson said the problem was that McClellan was struggling academically last spring, even before his father died.
Although McClellan initially tried to become eligible at the end of the fall semester, he did not make it and had to take a winter-session course to meet academic progress requirements. He finally became eligible on Jan. 11, just a day before the Oregon State game and three days before suffering his season-ending surgery.
Onobun, a freshman forward from Houston, had not played since UA's final exhibition game on Nov. 16 in order to preserve an extra year of eligibility. But Olson inserted Onobun eight minutes into Thursday night's game and Onobun scored his first basket of the season with 1:39 before halftime.

Unbelievable.....this season has just gone from bad to worse. I am excited about Onubon getting in and going 3/3 this game (all my friends said he was very impressive in the initial exhibition portion of the season) but it would have been alot better if it was at the expense of that idiot Rodgers than a guy in Jawann, whom i thought would come on as the year went on.

Whats next? a loss to ASU....? Two things come from this....

UCLA is now the definitive favorite in the conference....

and we are suddenly short on guards. A tucson first...

Budinger and Bayless cant get here fast enough. Thank god for Marcus Williams who looks to be a lock in a tough Pac-10 freshman of the year competition....
