I only say McClown is the next Jake because of Coach Mac's comments in response to getting a veteran backup QB "Not yet"

Instead, the Cardinals will continue to hand McClown the backup job with no competition to compete against.

We can all say that Parsons has a legitimate shot at the backup QB, but that isn't true. The coaching staff has flat said that Josh is the backup.

Ultimately this situation reminds me of the situation with Plummer. The coaching staff and ownership never brought in anyone to legitimately compete with Plummer. They just handed him the reigns.

Now they do the same with McClown, despite the fact he looks and a I quote "inconsistent" (coach speak for bad).

If Jake does well in Denver, it will be because of the pressure. Because he HAS to or he is out. He never really had that threat out here. The Cardinals made a mistake being the only team with 3 QBs in camp, and they compuund it by not bringing in someone to put the heat on Josh now.

Here's why they did that, this is Jake from a CBSsportsline article.

The luster had worn off," said Plummer. "They lost patience with me. It was time to move on. They knew it, and I knew it. They made me and offer with the idea I would compete for the job. That was ridiculous. Coming here (Denver) was a no-brainer. It's a chance to restart my career. It's a new beginning. I can put everything that's happened so far behind me. It's all in the past."

The fact that after 6 crappy years with no challenge, Jake felt being asked to compete for the job was "ridiculous" tells you why they never did it before. They felt that putting real competition for jake on the roster would impact his play.

Right now he's got Beuerlein to compete with but in reality he knows perfectly well the guy will retire after the season and Jarius Jackson is not an NFL starter. So he has a threat this year but after that the job is his unless he bombs. I read that quote and I just said once again I am SO glad this guy is in Denver.

hmmmmm

Common. Don't you think your judging him a little too early? Mac has him around for a reason. Although we all love the game and the Cards,...there's a reason we're fans, and they are coaches!

Jake was the #1 QB without competition - McCown is the back-up. HUGE difference!!!!

Coach's speak "inconsistent" means he's inconsistent, he will make good plays and bad, don't read to much into that. Parson's just doesn't do that much for me, I have seen him several times sure he may someday be a good QB, hell he may even be a little better then McNown at times right now ( he is more polished, he better show something) but his ceiling is so much lower, I'm all for bringing in a vet backup, but I'm not close to being ready to give up on a kid with the kind of ability's that McCown has and IMO will start showing. I just don't think people realize just how raw this kid was coming out of college, I said when we drafted him we would start to see what we had in 3 years give him a chance he just may surprise you. But just in case it got missed I'm all for bringing in a vet. but I don't understand the need for one right at this moment, I would rather McCown and Parson's get more preseason snaps see if they can settle down and play within themselves, any decent vet. should be able to run a partial playbook in a week, so what is the rush.

Glad you like it Tango, I was going to use the name Jake's Ass Puppet but then I realized you already trademarked that name.

Step right up folks, watch Jake wiggle his fingers and Tango talk...

Isnt it too early too start making bad nicknames for the kid. This is his second year and he is steadily improving. He hasnt even started an NFL game yet how can he be compared to any NFL starter.

Could be

He definitely could turn out to be okay, I just don't see a franchise level QB in McCown. You wanted to know why I liked Leftwich, it actually has more to do with my lack of confidence in McCown than anything else.

After years of watching Jake fail, I just want us to be the team with the up and coming franchise QB.

Yeah, but you are compairing a top ten pick with a 3rd round draft pick, where is it written that a franchise QB has to be the man in the 1st or 2nd year. Pennington sat for a few years with the Jets now everyone is saying he is a franchise QB, I wonder how many of those same people were thinking he was a bust while he was sitting.

I really think its simular to a minor league pitcher that has a 95 mph fastball, but needs to learn how to pitch, that is what you are getting with McCown IMO he has the tools now he needs to be taught how to use them, your right he could turn out to be a non factor, but he could also turn into something very special either way its to early to give up on him.

I also really liked Leftwich coming into the draft, he has a bigtime arm, but the closer to the draft we got, the more I didn't want him, he lacks the one thing I think every QB in the NFL needs in todays game mobility or escapablity, he will be deadmeat in the pocket IMO, he played a ton out of the shotgun at Marshall how will he do in a prostyle offense? against the speed that the NFL players have, its fun to think he could have been our franchise QB, but in truth he has just as many questions about him as we have about McCown.

So did you see franchise QB in Tom Brady, Jeff Garcia, Kurt Warner, or a whole slew of other out of thin air or questionable QB's?? heck I remembner when it was first anounced that Garcia was starting for the 49er's that everyone , myself included, figured that the 9ers were going down the tubes, and that Garcia was a "homo" and would get broken on the first series he played. When Brady came in for Bledsoe, I swore that the Patsies were done for the season. When Warner was given the job after Green got injured, we all thought, ohhh same old Rams.

Thats the trick, there are a lot of Franchise QB's that noone predicted to be one, and now are. so dont be too sure on McCown.

McCown started off ok, until Ekuban draped himself over Starkey, who's a foot shorter than Ekuban, and Roy Williams came around the corner and hit McCown at about 50 miles an hour from the blind side. McCown was a little jumpy after that.

The coaching staff will evaluate his performance again for two quarters this saturday.

Jake Plummer never had anyone that could compete with him when he was here. If he was still here, he'd beat out Jeff Blake too.

I find it interesting that no one was worried about these same two backups last year...

Uh Lex, I think everybody was concerned that these were the two back-ups last year. I know I was.

Of course you think Plummer would beat out Blake, because the way you talk about Jake, I think it safe to assume that you think Jake would beat out Steve Young or Brett Favre.

Everyone was concerned about not having a quality backup to Jake last year. Heck most of us were concerned about not having a quality starting QB last year. ;)

Krang- get real. Jake Plummer would beat out Steve Young all day.

I never saw Jake overthrow a receiver by 30 yards like I saw last Saturday night about 4 times in a quarter.

Hand it off Jeff, hand it off.

Nidan- true.

I was at the game, watched the replay, then watched a tape last night. I know...too much free time.

Blake was throwing the ball away, the receivers were covered, but he could have made a play underneath. It's only preseason, but when he let those balls fly, I'm used to expecting some sort of play out of it. I'll get used to Blake eventually.

Wild Card- good point, unless I really am delusional...

Boys- line up Steve Young-Joe Montana-and Joe Namath, or any other retired guy, and Jake will beat them out.

That's all I was saying.

Young WOULD STILL beat out Plummer.

I thought it was nice to see a QB who could throw 40 yards without throwing a wounded duck...

Krang- you were there, when Blake let loose on those beautiful deep balls, and they were 30 yards long, what did you think?

I thought, "Man, that's a beautiful deep ball. Must be 30 yards in the air."

As I said, I was extremely happy to see a QB that doesn't throw a wounded duck on those longer throws.
