You forgot Jamal Crawford and Stromile Swift and most other good FAs.

Truth is everyone could get injured.

And it is not like Marcus Camby would sign a nearly as long or big contract as Googs or Penny did. If Marcus Camby got injured it is only like 1/8 of what Googs and Penny hurt.
And if he did we would probably have insurance picking up his contract.

There, I added Crawford for you. I'm not as sure about a guy like Swift, although I think it's unlikely they would go after him.

You are correct. Everyone could get injured. That doesn't mean you should go out and sign one of the most often injured players in the league to a big contract. Anybody could get in a car crash on their way home from work this evening. However, do you think it would be a good idea to run red lights and stop signs to get home more quickly just because the possibility of a crash already exists?

For argument's sake, what kind of contract you think it would take to get Marcus Camby here?

Here's a few other guys I think the Phoenix Suns will not even contemplate signing.

1. Marcus Camby
2. Erick Dampier
3. Quentin Richardson
4. Steve Nash

I agree on Nash and Dampier but I like Camby as a player and would not mind spending some money on him as long as it is not a very long contract.

Yeah because it makes so much sense that it would be too much for the Suns to pay a center market value when they are far enough under the cap to afford it.

Market value for who? For star Marcus Camby, or 30-year-old consistently injured Marcus Camby??

You forgot the "6" before "Joe Mama," but I agree that the Suns won't go after him either. :D

To be honest, I've started to warm to Dampier a bit. I think the Suns would really have to study his career very carefully to try to gain some insight into why it has been so disappointing before now. But before getting hurt a couple of weeks ago, he was putting up some absolutely amazing games, being the dominant player on the floor most nights. I think he merits serious consideration as the #2 center in the league this year.

Now, I'm as wary as the next guy about players who show up big in contract years, but might a change of scenery be enough to keep him motivated? Even if he retreated to 75% of the player he was this season, he'd be the best center in the history of the Suns franchise, hands down. And for a deal starting at $8 million per season (just to pick a number out of the air), he'd be a steal.

Let's put it this way: What is the best hope for the Suns at center next season?

1. Sign Camby and hope he stays fairly healthy.
2. Sign Dampier and hope he stays fairly motivated.
3. Retain White and hope that he becomes taller, leaner, and more skilled.
4. Give the job to Lampe and hope that he can accumulate five years of NBA experience in a single summer.
5. Stick with Voskuhl and hope that he's adequate.
6. Find a cheap player in the FA market (I'm including Okur here) and hope that he blossoms.
7. Draft a longshot and hope that he proves to be a gem.

Am I missing any choices? I think those are about it. And looking over all those options, well, they aren't exactly appealing. But I'm starting to think that #2 has the best chance of working.

You're just high on Dampier because he was a pain in your ass. :p

I admit it did force me to take a more careful look at him. ;) But he has been pretty damn impressive this season.

Dampier has also had some injury problems in the past as well. Not as bad as Camby, but still. Then again, you can work with the motivation issue, and pretty much are stuck with injuries.

Personally, I don't want to sign Camby for a lot of money (which he will demand), but he is easily the best fit at center for this team.

Option 8. Keep McDyess since he seems to have sparked the suns into some pretty good play the last month. (I like this option the best if there isn't any good players in the draft).

I think we're talking about the same kind of contract in either case (something like 3 yrs, $24m). For that money, I might barely consider Camby, but there's no way you could convince me to take Dampier.

Dampier is a poor fit with Amare, lack of effort will always be an issue with him, and his huge stats seem to have zero effect on whether his team wins or loses.

If you can get Dampier without disrupting your main goal in free agency, then you do it.

I don't want to hear about his motivation.

Has anybody seen this guy on the court? He may be the longest player I've ever seen. His knuckles almost scrape the ground. He's the most physically imposing center this side of Shaq.

Dampier creates space for Amare. He makes your frontcourt a rebounding machine.

The Suns need to upgrade. This is one part if the price is right.

I agree.

When JC talks about adding some size this summer, I think he has Dampier (among others) in mind. It will probably go like this.

1. Draft. If we get lucky we take Okafor. Otherwise we look for the best available player. We might trade the pick if it brings us something we like.

2. Free Agency. Kobe first. But alot has to fall into place. He's got to be aquitted (or look very likely), he has to leave LA, and he has to be determined not to play the immature games. If not, we look at Dampier and Camby. Both have downsides and both have tremendous upside.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I have trouble understanding how he creates space for Amare Stoudemire. Dampier is not at all a threat from outside 10 feet of the basket. That's the same space Amare likes to operate within. I'm not saying that makes him a bad fit necessarily, but it certainly doesn't creates space for Amare Stoudemire. A center like Okur would creates space for him.

Remember, IF Dampier opts out, he will be forgoing a year's salary of over 8 million dollars. What makes anybody think he will settle for less? If it's about multi-year contracts, why not just stay in Golden St another year and try again next summer?

Ah, right. I should have included a "gamble all year with small ball" option, which is what any lineup featuring McDyess and Stoudemire as the two "bigs" would be. You're right that that is definitely something the Suns will consider. I think it's a terrible idea, but it is an option on the table.

My guess is, if Dampier opts out, someone will give him at least four years starting at $8 million or more. Based on what he did this season, he's just too tantalizing.

More power to him. Just as long as that team isn't the Suns.

If that's the case, then he's going to have to be option 1A in the Suns' plans.

I can see PHX making a big play for Kobe. If that doesn't pan out, then 1A Dampier and 1B Brent Barry may be on their radar.

If PHX is going to spend $8MIL on someone (other than Kobe), he better have no question marks.

Let's face it, this team needs experience. Someone who can still play and be a bad ass in the locker room. Someone who can let it be known that you can't take a night off defensively.

We'll know tons more after the ping pong balls stop spinning.

BTW, this is the last time I want to see this team in the lottery.

I would not be upset if the Phoenix Suns signed Erick Dampier to a four-year $40 million contract. Right now I'm skeptical of his big year though. Over the last several seasons he only averaged about 5.5 rebounds and 6 points per game in about 25 minutes per game. Then this season, in the absence of Troy Murphy and Antwawn Jamison his numbers have doubled although his minutes have only increased by about 10 minutes per game. His teams still sucks though.

There is no doubt that Marcus Camby makes teams better when he is healthy. The New York Knicks or always much better with him in the lineup. The Denver Nuggets have flourished this season with him. I just don't think the odds are very good that he will stay healthy. It's a risk I don't think this franchise can take after giving away one of their best players to get rid of another burdensome contract.

I guess that sums up why I do not like either of those guys. People can complain about small ball, but I'm not sure that McDyess isn't a better fit than at least Erick Dampier. IMO McDyess is a better rebounder. He also has a nice midrange game that complements Amare Stoudemire's game. Dealmaking he lacks is the size to go up against the bigger centers in the NBA. The only problem is his health, and that's why I would only advocate signed him to a small short-term deal.

Dampier will take less than what he makes right now and it is really simple why.

If he doesn't opt out he will have 17M$ or so in the next 2 years but he already is about 30 so the chances are he will only get the MLE at best for a few years.

Say he gets 3 yrs 12M$ after that. That would be 5yrs/29M$ total only.

It would be better and much safer for him to sign a 5yrs/35M$ contract this offseason rather than staying put.

You don't think he'll take more if he gets offered more to come to a good situation? You make it sound like there won't be a serious bidding war for him. There will be. Aside from Nash, who will almost certainly be retained by Dallas, Dampier is the #2 free agent on the market this summer (assuming both he and Bryant opt out).
