So what was the significance of the Hulk situation? Surely he wasn't afraid of Thanos I mean,,, the Hulk isn't afraid of anything right? I mean Thanos did work him over pretty good but still.

I think it had to do with him getting worked over by Thanos. I looked like he almost died.

I thought it was solid, but just a big set-up for another movie. Thought it was interesting how they set up so many different new teams.

The Spidey/Drax/Stark/Strange/Mantis/Star-Lord group was easily my favorite.

Wished there was a lot more Cap. Wished they stopped for even ONE scene to slow down to have a real moment for Widow/Banner. Maybe that happens in the next one where they only really have to deal with the original Avengers, probably bringing Clint out of retirement and getting Ant-Man, the Wasp and Captain Marvel into the action.

Biggest problem for me is that at this point is feeling like no one's death will ultimately matter.

Not so much everyone at the end who disappeared. I can live with ALL of those "deaths" because I think it's just part of the plan in Dr. Strange's ONE future out of 1.4 billion where they can actually win. So, I didn't see those so much as schmuckbait as I normally would because this seemed all part of the plan. Like Strange said to Tony right before he gave him the time stone:

This is the ONLY way they can survive. (or whatever it was).

But I'll PISSED if somehow the universe is retconned even further back and they save Gomorah/Loki/Vision too. Those are MEANINGFUL deaths. To erase those also would just be incredibly lame.

Oh, and Thanos was a solidly developed villain from both a character AND visual standpoint.

And i have to think either Cap or Tony dies in the next one. More likely Tony. This has always been HIS vision with Thanos. Feel like it has to end with a massive sacrifice from SOMEONE from the original team.

Gamora and vision will stay dead. But I doubt any more will. Which will be lame.

I get that they kept the original avengers intact which makes sense for part 2.

The reasons the other deaths were initially a gut punch were because they were the opposite of what I expected. I expected cap, Stark Thor maybe. So when black panther died I was shocked (gasps around me in the theater). I couldn’t remember if there was supposed to be another black panther movie. My initial reaction was “oh cripe I can’t take my 6 year old who idolizes black panther, he’ll never recover from this!” When Spider-Man died I realized “oh, they’re all coming back, they’ve just started the Spider-Man franchise.” So at that point I was a little disappointed that there weren’t more impactful deaths.

And the Hulk thing - he was scared to death of Thanos. He’d never been beaten like that in his life. And remember, hulk is essentially a child throwing a temper tantrum. Of COURSE he’d be terrified of a bigger bully. But it makes the inner conversation of Bruce and Hulk even better. It might result in Bruce eventually gaining control of Hulk, which I believe happened eventually in the comics. A super intelligent Hulk makes for a most formidable opponent. One likely necessary to thwart Thanos.

I also immediately picked up one dr strange’s words to stark to the effect it has to go this way. Stark is brilliant enough to remember that and that’s likely how they’ll eventually unwind all the deaths.

And to show I’m not that smart . . . I knew they were making Captain Marvel and completely forgot until the tag-on at the end. Without Marvel making an appearance I should’ve seen that coming.

Not sure where I'd rank this one.

Doesn't come close to cracking my top 4.

1. Winter Soldier
2. Iron Man
3. Guardians of the galaxy
4. Civil War
5. The Avengers

It's so much half a movie, that it's hard to put it into a list for me.

It's up there for sure. In terms of spectacle? It's hands down the best hero movie I have seen. If you are talking about pure NERDGASMS...DITTO. I give much credit in terms of with the time they had the job they did with fitting characters in there and fitting as much story as possible in there. I think depending on what they do with the second, maybe they both feel like one giant story.

Two characters not being there were basically big holes for me. No matter what the reason is, no way do those two characters stay on the sideline knowing that a big bad like Thanos is coming to destroy everything. It simply wouldn't happen.

In terms of the deaths? I think they way they handled the carnage was brilliant. I also completely disagree they are meaningless if my theory is correct. If there truly is a price to pay with the Soul Stone then that means who dies right now resonates and then will resonate again if people must trade their Souls in essence to trade places with some in the next movie. That to me would be one of the most brilliant approaches ever if that is where they go. Talk about putting fans on a yo yo.

Now if we take out everything but story? I put Avengers and Captain America Winter Soldier above this. I am talking purely from a story perspective. I still think those two are better from a story perspective.

Just when you thought you may have had it nailed, Feige throws another curve ball. Marvel is really doing a stellar job with their MCU overall.

“There are still things that are key elements to a lot of our characters in their comic incarnations that we haven’t even done yet for characters who have had three or four movies,” Feige said. “It is an amazing wealth of creative material to pull from.”
More movies from characters who we thought might be done?

My only note would be that this is a two part movie, so I don't think comparing it as stand alone is fair yet.

I saw some comments wondering about Galactus making an appearance in the next one.

I think it's going to be both. I think you are going to see some follow through with standalone elements that set the stage for the next phase of movies. If many of the rumors are true you will start to see the next in line to be Avengers coming into the picture.

Man if the earth had to take on Thanos and galactus back to back that would be the worst luck ever.
The theory from another site was that Galactus has the power to turn back time, so that would be used to go back to NY from Avengers 1 and stop Thanos then. It was just one of those "what if's"

So basically erasing everything post Avengers 1? Oh...I hope not.

That would be a disaster imo
I dunno...wasnt Thanos watching the battle of NY?? Could slide back in time and instead of Stark flying the nuke into the rift,...Silver Surfer could zoom it through and drop it in Thanos lap... That would end Thanos without really affecting much that happened after.

I mean, if Galactus shows up, Surfer has to be with him right?... then Surfer changes sides and helps the Avengers destroy Galactus

Going back in time to fix something is such a cliche now. I hope they don't do a time fix or snap of the finger to undo it type thing. It would completely deflate any of the death and weight from those deaths for this movie.

I really hope some folks stay dead or have to trade their souls and I hope that Marvel has a more complex explanation up their sleeve to address what happens in this movie.

agreed. giving up one's soul for another gives those deaths impact.

time travel or alternate timelines is just Marvel continuing to lower the stakes of every movie they make, which gets a little tiresome when they try to keep raising them within movies by "killing" off characters only to bring them back by the end of the movie or the next movie.

Really enjoyed it.

love the fact a bunch of them died (for now). It was about time a movie with “War” in the title led to some carnage.

Does anyone else find Starlord the most annoying character by far?

No, I don’t find him annoying. Part of that is being a fan of Chris Pratt. But this is all because of him. He’s the reason Thanos got all the stones and wiped half the earth from existence.

Really liked it but I will agree with some others, the ending didn’t really pack a punch for me.

So, I absolutely loved it. Really raised the stakes. An incredible movie from start to end, with the humor, the action, and the feels all in the right places. Speaking of said end, however, I had a major eye-rolling quibbled...

I finally got around to seeing it and totally agree!

I just re-watched Thor Ragnarock and realized that everyone on the ship were the last of the Asgardens. So now that they all died in the beginning of this movie, does that mean they were wiped out besides Thor?
