Football fans know the team is turning a corner and I can't wait for the season.

Like I said before, I have an open mind and it's fine with me if they do well. I have absolutely nothing at stake in the Cardinals one way or the other. Saying that their performance last year was unimpressive to a non-fan isn't "bashing" them.

it's not bashing them - but from a "non-fan" and someone who admittedly doesn't watch the NFL, it is relatively uninformed IMO.

Well duh, of course it's uninformed. I'm entitled to laugh at a joke even if I don't fully appreciate the subtle inaccuracies behind it.

There's no reason to continue this. Bash the Cards all you want.

Hey, with all the snipers from the Cards forum that come over here and spout off not knowing anything during bad times, I think we deserve to mouth off every once and a while!

At least we keep it here and don't broadcast it in the other forum. Of course, I have a feeling I would have been banned or lynched - whatever came first if I did that :p

I actually thought it was the only clever thing in his entire article. Wrong - but somewhat clever (if that makes any kind of sense).

To say that the 6-10 Cardinals “had a shot at the division title” and were in the playoff hunt as a way to imply that they are a good team is a bit like saying that the 36-46 Orlando Magic were a good team just because they barely missed a playoff spot in the weak Eastern conference.

It would be one thing if the Cardinals had finished the season crushing their opponents like the Suns did last year and the Warriors did this year. But they didn’t. They won “6” games the entire year in the NFC West. In fact based on the standings, it appears that the NFC West was the worst conference in football last year. And yet out of 4 merely mediocre to really bad teams, the Cardinals placed 3rd while losing against the 4th place finisher.

In trying to defend the Cardinals, you reveal how bad they were. “They were 4-5 and challenging for a wildcard spot”. 7 games to go in a season and you’re looking for a wildcard spot and proclaiming a losing record a success? I admire your enthusiasm in the face of grim defeat. Of course, that’s right after you state that they go on a 3 game losing streak.

Based on this post, I have to say that you’re not really selling the sizzle of this supposedly “new and improved” Cardinal team.

you just don't know what you're talking about if you don't recognize they are new and improved. you're talking to two realists as regards the cardinals. we're not homers. hell, we're not homers with the suns either (remember, neither cheese nor i think they'll win it all this year). if we know a lot more about a topic than you do are you really going to continue arguing with us? that's just not smart.

no, i think you used the word "terrible" and that's what brought about my response. there's a world of difference between "unimpressive" and "terrible," agreed?

You're missing the point. If someone makes a joke, and everyone except serious Cardinals fans think it's funny, then the joke works. I'm sorry if it's misinformed to laugh at it, but more than one person did. If "The Daily Show" makes a Michael Jackson molestation joke, and everyone laughs, it's still funny-- even if Michael Jackson didn't actually do anything and only a handful of people know it. Elindholm was wrong, apparently, in his perception of the Cardinals. However, that being said, promising signs aren't going to sway the general public's perception of the Cardinals.

The majority of the country thinks the Cardinals stink, whether that perception is founded or not. It's because everyone thinks that which makes the joke funny. If a sub-so-so Memphis humour columnist were to make an extremely well informed joke about the Arizona Cardinals, can you guess what would happen? Nobody would get it.

I'm not from either city so I can't get offended. But I'll try:

Ancient Roots

Us:
Memphians.

Them: Phoenicians.

Memphians were residents of Memphis, maybe the greatest city the world has ever seen. The Phoenicians were known as sailors and traders. Indeed, the Greek word for Phoenicians was synonymous with the color purple, from a famous dye used in the textile trade. That's why the Phoenicians became known as the Purple People. True fact. So maybe Barney could be the mascot? Edge, Memphis.

I'm not even going to look this one up. He compared the city of ancient Memphis the the Phoenician civilization?

Actually I've been to both cities and there is no comparison.
But you would think that anyone could write an article that made one's town look better than another. I guess not.

Sorry if this was on-topic. :D

edit to add the word "ancient" for clarity.

Living in Memphis, I can't defend what this guy says, nor do i really ever want to. I'm a SUNS FAN!! I've been to both places, and he's way off.

here's my thoughts on his article, and what i might say to him..

About the fact that the Gorilla is a irrelavant mascot and the Grizz is not.

HELLO, there are no grizzlies in Memphis!!! If he would check the stats, he would know that the Memphis Zoo is desperatly trying to get a grizzly in there so it makes some sense. otherwise it's like the Utah JAZZ???(yeah, there's probably a lot of jazz in Utah  ) and there are plenty of lakes in LA as well right?? And correct me if i'm wrong, but desn't the Phoenix zoo at least have a gorilla?

comparing the grand canyon to anyhting else?

Ever flown over the grand canyon? It's Awesome! Ever flown over the Mississippi? it looks like a toilet with someone who's had the runs...

About the professional football....

At least AZ, has a team. People here think UT and the Titans (400, and 200 miles away) are their pro teams. They fly their flags (next to the confederate ones) and paint their dogs orange.

About the grass...

I Have family in mesa and scotsdale. Yes there is grass there, and it's GREEN. for the ammount of rain we get in Memphis, our grass sure is ugly. they even plant it dead...

About the weather...

Im origionally from the west. i Love the dry heat. I'd rather get a nice tan in the sun, than have the air sweat for me.

that's all for now. I've got your back in Memphis!

I've long thought that Bidwill (or Bidwells) was a terrible owner - well before the Cardinals left St. Louis to come here. In fact, when Phoenix was negotiating for the Cards I thought Phoenix should hold out for something other than a hopeless case.

I think the parallel with the Clippers is very apt - surely Donald Sterling is a spiritual protege of Bidwill, if nothing else. In fact their teams are in phase with each other - I'll bet there are lots (well, several, anyway) of Clippers fans who are seeing signs of the Clippers turning the corner this year. After all they were the best team in LA and showed definite flashes of mediocrity. But both owners are old hands at yanking the rug out from under any hireling who is threating their status as a laughingstock...

Most of the people who bash Phoenix have never been here. Every city has it's charm and it's advantages and disadvantages.

However, the comment on the Cardinals is pretty weak. Memphis would kill to have any NFL team, just like every other non-NFL city would. A perfect example is during the Suns playoff game, there were over 50 people talking in the Cardinals board.

The NFL is the real national sport. I prefer hoops, but I am definitely in the minority.

Memphis Cheesy lounge singers

Phoenix Stevie Nicks (On tour later this year.)

Even older and chunkier, Stevie Nicks is hotter and a better singer than anyone they throw up! Advantage Phoenix!

BUMP to Cheese and Ouchie,

This is such a low blow to bump this thread and I wish to apologize in advance. But it’s a little slow around here and I just couldn’t help myself after the way you guys defended the Cards as if this year was going to be any different than the other 50 or so years.

I believe the Cards were supposed to be great and new and improved and yadda, yadda this year….

I don’t want to rub it in too hard because I do feel your pain. But still, it is kind of funny. But you guys are cool and I hope you understand that this a good-natured ribbing. Nothing personal – all in good fun.

But at least you can count on the SUNS to be competitive.

look back. neither of us ever said anything about the cards being "great" - even we aren't that stupid. as for the new and improved, we'll see. the talent level is definitely better, the problems are at least, for the first time in a long time easily identifiable (oline, oline, and oline and a little special teams in that first game).

no prob w/ ribbing. can't wait for the nba season to start.

My apologies for misquoting you. However, the implications were that this year was going to be different. But hopefully they’ll get it together in time to get people excited before the move into the new stadium. Which is actually looking pretty cool.

I have to admit, I was going to say the same thing as se7en. I particularly remember being lectured about how the Cardinals had a new logo, as if that could possibly make any difference. Logos don't win games -- not even Jerry West, heh.

I'm not a fan of any one NFL team, so I don't particularly care how the Cardinals do, although I have to admit I was sort of pulling for them at the end last Sunday.

Like se7en, I'm not trying to rub anything in, but I do think the Cardinals' latest exploits reinforce two points:

1. As a new season approaches, fans always think their team is going to be good, no matter how strong the evidence and history are to the contrary.

2. The media are a bunch of copycats. As soon as one of them saw promise for this year's Cardinals, nearly every writer piled on the bandwagon, without thinking about things for himself. Heck, even Bill Simmons got swept along for the ride. When you have dozens of people who robotically repeat whatever it is that they just read, that's not dozens of opinions -- it's one opinion.

Anyway, good luck to the Cardinals the rest of the way. It's not too late for them to salvage their season and I wish them the best.
