Steroids are not a drug taken for recreation, their purpose is to rebuild the muscles faster than ordinary, allowing for greater recovery time for the muscles which has many benefits.

Regardless of the % of other players taking a steroid or steroid derivative it is a banned substance by the NFL and any players who take it are breaking the rules because taking that drug gives those users an unfair advantage over those that do no.

Merriman shouldn't be allowed to go to the pro bowl because we don't know how much his usage affected his game on the field. What we do know is that he was caught cheating and because he used something that unleveled the playing field in a banned substance, he forfeits any accolades achieved.

quick question: Do players generally receive a bonus for being selected for the pro bowl? If so, and if it's generally accepted that his steroid use improved his play, then I think it's wrong for him to go. The extra $$ would be a very direct REWARD for his cheating.

IF, on the other hand, there is no bonus for going to the pro bowl, & it's just a prestige thing, then I still think it sucks, but I guess I'm not AS bothered by it.

Many of them have it written into their contracts I think but don't quote me on that.

IIRC there's a payout for playing in the game and the winning team gets more money. It's an incentive they put in because the game was so boring in the past, players were more worried about not getting hurt than winning.

IIRC, correct on both accounts. Winning team gets a fat check and I wouldn't be shocked to find some of the upper-echelon players have said clauses in their contract.

Peppers reportedly made 3 million for it this year and 1 million in prior years.

Yes, as of 2006 the Pro Bowl players on the winning team got 40K each. Losers got 20K.

Not sure what the payout is this year.

Just to clarify my position. Merriman cheated got caught, do I think he's the only pro bowler who used steroids no, just the only one who got caught. But my biggest problem with Merriman is not so much that he cheated, but that like every other person in history who gets caught, he's now lying and backpedaling about it. Just sack up and say I made a mistake. I didn't like Luis Castillo being praised for telling all NFL teams before the draft I made a mistake, mainly because I thought he only did it to help his draft status, not because he was truly sorry. But in hindsight, I owe him an apology, at least he sacked up and admitted he'd cheated after being caught.

As a sports fan I am so sick and tired of every athlete who fails a test offering some lame excuse about spiked supplements, 2nd hand smoke, I had too much sex the night before, my dead unborn twin caused that, the French are framing me BS. Just once I would like to hear someone like Merriman stand up and say I screwed up, I admit it, I apologize, won't happen again. None of this I thought it was flaxseed oil, or I don't want to talk about the past senator I want to look forward. You were man enough to stick the needle in your butt, be man enough to tell the truth when you get caught.

:soapbox:

Well, Russ... I fully expect that the day Barry Bonds breaks Hank Aaron's HR record, he'll admit publicly that about 250 of his HR's were directly related to steriod use. Do you think I'm a bit naive? ;)

First of all, does anyone know that it was sterioids for which he was caught? If he was juicing up, I think a trip to Hawaii is undeserved. If it was some unpronouncable chemical that was in a protein drink that happens to be on the banned list...ephedra for example doesn't really give the same kind of edge that steroids do, it's just a health risk so the NFL doesn't want to deal with it. Uh, I mean protect it's players.

Second, "steroids don't really help play football anyway" is a spoof of the the ridiculous Barry Bonds defense if I'm not mistaken. Maybe everyone knows this already but I got the impression that some were taking the quote as the posters opinion.

Last, isn't 2/3 of the Pro Bowl voting done by the coaches and players? They're the one's who sent this guy to Hawaii, not uninformed, unscrupulous, unintelligent fans. Besides all of which, since when does San Diego have enough interested fans to sway a ballot in sports? Which AFC LB got jilted by so many San Diegans stuffing the ballot box?

Russ, somehow I missed your post or I would have commented on it in my previous post. However, it's good enough to get it's own reply so why not? Anyway, I agree with you in theory but not in reality. From the player's standpoint, realistically, there's nothing really to gain by being honest and frank when it comes to the media. Ask Kurt Warner. Totally different situation but he learned the hard way that canned responses are the only way to survive in the NFL, etc.

I always think it's refreshing when someone tells it like it is, but it really isn't beneficial for that person to do it.

From what I've read, players suck as voters.

If I had to guess, I'd say they were just as suceptible or more than fans in terms of the popularity contest mentality. It seems like a lot of players make it to the pro-bowl based off of what they did last year anyway.

I didn't get a real definitive answer but my cousin, who lives in San Diego, said that Merrimen's offense was more of the supplement than of the steroid violation.

None of it is particularly important to me since I rarely bother to watch the Pro-Bowl anymore anyway.

I wished we would have drafted Merriman instead of Rolle in 2005, even after Rolle's interception against the 49'ers yesterday.

I just think that its funny that NOBODY seems to care about steroids in football but in baseball it is such a huge scandal. And by nobody I am mostly talking about the media.

Who was his competition?

Grossman , Favre, Brad Johnson, Vick, Gradowski, Haaselbeck, Young, Garcia, Del Homme, Eli Manning, Bulger, Garrard, et al. Those guys have warts.

Agreed, I'm more embarrassed to have a guy suspended for cheating playing in the probowl because it basically tells all the clean players what you're doing doesn't matter.

Yup...and cheating doesn't matter. Merriman did it at Maryland. Everyone knew.

I dont think his 4 game suspension without pay and no contact with the team shows the other players "it doesnt matter what your doing" call me crazy.

...and he will have to pee in a bottle the rest of his career.

I just think some of us are more disheartened with fans and other players voting for him under these circumstances.
