Chris Young? You've got to be kidding. There are several rookies playing a lot better thus far than he is. The timely HR are nice, but he won't even be in the ROY discussion unless he fires up a lot on day-to-day performance.

He's 1, 2, or 3 in hits, doubles, HR, RBI, Runs and outfield assists among rookies

He is basing it on his average. Chris Young should definitely be in the discussion for rookie of the year and if he continues at this pace should have a great shot at it.

The 'deciders' seem to look at average first and HR, etc subsequently, just as they look at W-L first for pitchers, then ERA, and maybe go past that. If his BA isn't significantly higher, I think they will tend to discount him. It always seems to depend mostly on the last 6-8 weeks of the season anyhow. Last year I recall some radio guy complaining that there are a disproportionate number of older voters who don't get much past BA.

Bobby Crosby won the AL award in '04 with a .239 average.

Mainly the discussions I heard late last summer on a couple radio shows about voting practices in general in MLB, ROY just being one under discussion. Still, it's not like guys with low averages are the norm...
"Crosby batted just .239 — the lowest ever for a rookie of the year" ...his closest AL non-pitcher competition was Alex Rios, who had very little going for him.

Hunter Pence and Josh Hamilton have comparable or better cases IMO.

They probably have better cases right now but they aren't exactly running away with it. Eric Byrnes walks a 2.5x greater rate than Pence and Josh Hamilton has cooled down considerably since April. CY isn't the favorite right now but if he ups his average he'll be in the mix at the end of the season.

Ill be surprised if CY wins it w/ other quality guys out there right now....but CY has got to get his average up eventually...right? Right? I can't imagine how much longer the Dbacks can keep winning and have all these guys w/ averages below 250.

Unfortunately I think Hamilton of the Reds is probably going to win it, especially if Griffey or Dunn are traded and he ends up an everyday starter.

He's the sentimental favorite, but he's also really cooled off and isn't seeing the same pitches he was earlier in the season
