Ryan reports that the Diamondbacks were working on a Mike Leake deal earlier this week. Not clear if talks are completely dead or not.

Thanks for the info!

While the Diamondbacks are obviously interested in adding Leake or another veteran starter to bolster their staff, it’s hard to imagine they’d take on anything close to his remaining contract. Leake is earning $16MM this year, $15MM in 2020, and a $5MM buyout for a 2021 mutual option. The Cardinals are on the hook for $5MM this year and $4MM next, but it’s still a hefty commitment. It’s not clear whether the Arizona organization remains a potential landing spot for Leake.

Edit - Mariners would need to also pay some salary

2019 31 Seattle Mariners $16,000,000 $5M paid by St. Louis Cardinals
2020 32 Seattle Mariners $15,000,000 $4M paid by St. Louis Cardinals
2021 33 Seattle Mariners *$18,000,000 $18M Mutual Option, $5M Buyout
Earliest Free Agent
: 2021

Mariners are currently on the hook for $6.7 Million left in 2019, $11 Million in 2020 plus minimum 5 M in 2021

WHY?

As it looks now, ARZ will not be making the playoffs. LA is running away with the division and the 2 WC spots will most likely end up going to teams outside the NL West. Leake ain't going to change that so you might as well look into potential deals for Greinke. Follow ATL's blueprint, purge all your high salaried guys and build yourself into a contender through your farm.

Why? Leake is not going to help this team in future years. They need to trade Greinke before the deadline.

So Dbacks will only pay $6M total through 2020

Seattle pays $18,982,258 to cover most of the $25,161,290 Leake is guaranteed.

A $4,982,258 payment on Sept. 1, leaving the Diamondbacks responsible for $159,032 of the $5,161,290 Leake is owed from his $16 million salary this year - which comes to a prorated share of the $555,000 minimum.

The pitcher has a $15 million salary next season, and Seattle pays the Diamondbacks $9 million in equal $2.25 million installments next year on April 15, June 1, July 15 and Sept. 1. Leake's deal includes a $5 million buyout of an $18 million club option for 2021, and the Mariners pay Arizona $5 million on Jan. 15, 2021.

Still seems like a solid deal. Having an anchor type at 4/5 is a good thing

oops - $9 million. Where did that 1 come from

Gotcha... Leake is serviceable and an immensely low-risk addition for us. He's a contact pitcher which could be "interesting" in places like Chase Field and Coors Field...
He's a savvy veteran though... With Greinke gone, I guess we'll go with a rotation of: 1.) Ray, 2.) Gallen, 3.) Leake 4.) Young 5.) Clarke??

Somewhere you gotta throw Kelly in there, and next year add in Weaver and Walker. I expect Kelly to be the odd man out.

One of those 6 (Ray, Gallen, Leake, Young, Clarke, Kelly) is going to the pen.

I agree. I’m just thinking about the now. I REALLY hope Weaver & Walker can come back and be productive!

I suspect Young, Clarke and Kelly will all be out with Weaver and Walker returning (fingers crossed)
