If true, Quinn is the next Mario Williams. If he is there at #5 I think he is the most obvious selection. So what if he was suspended for a year? Bertrand Berry sat out of football for a few years, came back and was a double digit sack guy.

I still think they should drop down and pick up Justin Houston as he is the "Steeler" mold of OLB and has experience as an OLB in the 3-4.

There should be some interest in that pick. Someone very good will be sitting there that someone will make a legit offer for.

We have to entertain that this yr. as there are so many glaring needs here.

Yes he did and so are you. He said it was a key element. You say it is an important aspect of the scheme. If that is the case why wouldn't you use a guy like Dansby or Martez Wilson as your OLB? Coverage skills for a 3-4 LB are overrated. All he needs to do is be able to drop into a specific area and run through his reads. Ball in your zone, man in your zone. I don't see where you need to do this for years in college to be good at it.

This is basic football. If you run a zone blitz scheme, your linebackers need to cover. That is a fact of football. So, with Horton bringing a zone blitz 3-4 scheme to Arizona, we are going to need to find linebackers that can cover in those zones. Every linebacker that we put on the field will need to be able to drop into a zone because that creates the uncertainty of who is blitzing and who is rushing. Without that confusion the scheme just does not work.

As far as the need to show the ability in college, you don't have to. But, if you are going to invest millions of dollars and a top 5 pick into a player to execute this scheme, you hope that he has shown the ability to do some of the most basic functions that you will ask him to do. This is why most teams take conversion guys later than the first round, because they are unsure if they are going to be able to adjust to the new position.

It is almost exactly like projecting Cam Newton from college QB to NFL QB with projecting Robert Quinn to the 3-4 OLB position, except you would be projecting Cam without ever having seen him play the position.

Berry sat out for a few years? Thought he just played in the CFL for one year, then went back to the NFL.

I bet the Steelers don't ask Woodley or Harrison to be in coverage more than 5 to 9 times a game, the rest of the time both guys are coming after your QB.

You would loss that bet.

North Carolina DE Robert Quinn ran an okay 4.73 hand-timed with a quick 1.63 10-yard split, but that was a lot slower than the 4.55 type time scouts were expecting

Just the DL group. LB's havent run yet.

Name, Weight, Speed

Dontay Moch 248 4.45
Sam Acho 262 4.63
Chris Carter 248 4.66
Brooks Reed 263 4.66
Jabaal Sheard 264 4.66
Ugo Chinasa 264 4.67
Ryan Kerrigan 267 4.67
Robert Quinn 265 4.67

Not exactly the "wow" combine mostly everyone was predicting for the kid.

Yeah, didn't get that 4.5, but I don't think this means he can't play OLB in the 3-4, right? What do you think about the prospect, Joe?

I dont like him as a prospect. I think he is a product of the hype of what people thought he was going to do as a junior after showing flashes in his sophmore year. Never got a chance to prove people right or wrong thus the hype continues.

I think he will be best used with his hand on the ground as a cover 2 4-3 DE

I doubt he runs a 4.4,or even a 4.5. Even if he runs in the 4.6 range, that's impressive for a guys his size.
:yeahthat:. He's probably my 5th out of 5 choices for the Cards pick.
1-1A Peterson/Miller
2- Bowers
3-Dareus
4-Quinn

I think it's more impressive that Justin Houston ran 4.68 at 270 pounds. That time likely is lower when he drops the added weight he gained.

Houston had good straight line speed, but did you see him fall twice when doing the drops? His hips looked horrible.

I think Sam Acho has just moved up to my second choice at OLB from 3rd.

Acho does look good.

When Mike Mayock says that he is a DE only, and his own agents don't have him do linebacker drills with Buffalo and Arizona (3-4 teams) in the top 5, then that reinforces to me that he is not a 3-4 OLB.

Very good, to the point that if the Bills take Miller (which I have them doing), I would love Patrick Peterson and Sam Acho with our first 2 picks.
That would be a very solid 1-2. I was hoping for Acho in 3 but I doubt he makes it far.
