Here is an intresting excerpt from a q&a at elitefts.com which is a strength training web site. This was written by Martin Rooney who runs the Combine Preparation Program at the Parisi School (in NJ) who consistently turns out the fastest 40s of the combine (i.e. Kevin Kasper, Dunta Robinson).

"As for the combine year, we again have some great talent and are expecting great things. SInce we are at the mercy of who signs with the single agency we work with, it is up to our training to produce, and I believe we are on our way again. I cant wait until the combine and then the draft. It is such an exciting time of year.

Right now we have 16 guys here, and I am almost certain we may have our long awaited 4.2 from Nebraska junior corner, Fabian Washington. He is putting up the same numbers as Dunta at this point and is getting better everyday.

We also have Matt Jones, SEC record holder and resident freak of this year. He played QB and basketball throughout college at Arkansas, and then moved to receiver just for the Senior bowl and tore it up. Look for some unreal numbers from him.

My sleeper of the year: Jerome Carter from Florida State. They think he is going to run a high 4.7, I am predicting low 4.4 and at 225 pounds and 25 reps on bench, he will be the freakiest safety there. He is really improving with the training.

Finally, I could not mention freakshows without using Derek Wake, LB from Penn State. If we have ever had a more jacked up montster than him, I dont remember it. This guy is going to scare half of the teams in to drating him with his 240 frame and 40+ vert.

As for other standouts, we also have Ryan Grant, the running back from Notre Dame, Domonique Foxworth, a corner from Maryland, CJ Brooks, stud guard from Maryland, Doug Nienhouse OT from Oregon State, Martin Patterson, LB from TCU, Jeremy Parquet, OT from Southern Miss, Justin Beriault S from Ball State, Adam Kieft from Central Michigan and more.

This is going to be another great year. The training has never been better and more structured, and the guys are responding like never before. Keep an eye out, this is going to be a big year."

I don't know much about the Washington kid from Nebraska. Interesting that he expects a good combine out of Jones when Senior Bowl reports were that his 40 time was a little slow.

Well it's great that they can improve their times on a track with these guys but what I want to see is an improvement in speed on the field... Does any of this training usually relate to on the field play?

Who cares about how much weight they can lift or how high their vertical is....I want playmakers not track stars.

This workout warrior stuff is nice as long as the player has the game film to back it up. By itself, it's not a surefire indicator of pro success. Good game film and poor workout numbers is not a good indicator either.

Three cone drill and shuttles relate more to football IMO. Change of direction skills stand out. The vertical is supposedly related to explosion, but Josh jumps 38-39 and he doesn't impress me as being that explosive off the mark. Neither did Rob Moore who supposedly verticaled over 40.

The 40 yard dash is relative as we all know by now.

225 lb. strength reps give you a decent idea of upper body strength.

I wish they posted the Cybex (lower body strength) numbers from the combine though.

Then you might want Matt Jones. He can do more things than anyone I know of and I think he will end up doing one of them more than just well. Tight end, wideout,QB (I do think he can play in the NFL), speed, can play anywhere from 235-265 lbs, can jump, practiced as a long snapper in the bowl game, can run with tremendous speed in the open field. This guy has to go no lower than the 3rd round. At 6'7" I still think someone is going to try him at QB his natural position. He is an athlete.

Good post, I believe this is a great draft year. Alot of posters would disagree with me, but as many bust there are against steals, this will be a great draft! This is the kind of draft that makes our 2nd rd pick very important.

ah, forty times

funny when people go nuts over a DL man's forty time. I never seen a D lineman run forty yards to get to a QB.

well that's not exactly what I meant.... what I mean is what this group is supposed to improve on is how well they can do these tests, if they teach them to run a little faster on the track will they learn how to run faster for a pass, or to hit someody? I do think speed is important if it's their game speed. What I want to know is are there guys improvements on the track helping their game speed? I mean in a way it seems like their speed will be inflated because they are just learning tricks of the trade like how to anticipate the gun or how to lose weight so they are lighter and can run the tests faster...when it comes to playing the game they'll just revert back to the speed they had in college, their real speed....

Talent is all about reading and reacting. Great player have the knowledge mentally and can make the plays physically. The Cardinals need playmakers.

Talk is cheap. El Bridgo Crosso.

Why speculate? We'll know soon enough who turns out the best times.
