Frank Darabont Writing Mission: Impossible 3?
Source: Ain't-It-Cool-News
Monday, March 22, 2004

Ain't-It-Cool-News is reporting that Frank Darabont (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption) is on board to write the script for Tom Cruise's third outing as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible 3. If this is correct, Darabont will take over the task from Dean Georgaris (Paycheck), who was previously announced as the one penning the film.

Darabont co-wrote the upcoming Cruise action-thriller Collateral for DreamWorks. Paramount Pictures is aiming for a May 6, 2005 release date for "M:I-3," to be directed by Joe Carnahan (Narc).

Darabont recently turned in a draft for Indiana Jones 4 to Paramount which got Steven Spielberg's approval but not from George Lucas.

Johansson Gets Weapons Training for M:I-3
Source: Contact Music
December 22, 2004

Although filming is not expected to start until later next year, Scarlett Johansson is already undergoing intensive weapons training for Mission: Impossibe 3. The Paramount Pictures sequel, to be directed by J.J. Abrams (Alias, Lost) and starring Tom Cruise, is eyeing a Summer 2006 release.

"[Shooting has] been postponed 'til September while it's rewritten. But I'm doing weapons training for it!," Johansson tells Contact Music. "Just pulling the trigger is easy enough, but when you're loading your magazine and you have a machine gun and a handgun and a shotgun, and you're trying to figure out how to use them all."

The actress added that she's "being trained by someone who was in the special forces, so I get to know interesting stuff like how they train the Iraqi army."

J.J. Abrams on Mission: Impossible 3
Source: USA Today
January 4, 2005

In a USA Today article talking about Alias creator J.J. Abrams' hectic life, he briefly touches on directing Mission: Impossible 3.

During this interview, he has to take a break to talk with an actress about a role in Mission: Impossible 3, the Tom Cruise vehicle that will be Abrams' feature-film directing debut. And that's before he checks in on four projects being considered for the fall TV schedule.

Abrams is thrilled about M:I-3, but he says even that had to be viewed through other work and family responsibilities. His wife — "the most wonderfully, brutally honest person I know" — said he had too much on his plate. He told Cruise he couldn't start shooting until after he finished the TV season. Cruise agreed to wait.

Action scenes and special effects will remain an M:I-3 staple, Abrams says, but his take will focus on who Cruise's Ethan Hunt is, "not just what he can do."

Ricky Gervais in Mission: Impossible 3?
Source: Daily Mirror
January 8, 2005

UK tabloid the Daily Mirror is reporting that The Office creator/star Ricky Gervais may star alongside Tom Cruise in Paramount's Mission: Impossible 3, targeted for a summer 2006 release.

The newspaper says Gervais agreed to take a role in the second sequel after meeting the international star when he picked up two Golden Globe Awards last year.

"I greatly admire the director Jeffrey Abrams and Tom Cruise is the greatest film star of our generation. It should be fun," Gervais was quoted as saying.

Gervais now hopes to hire Cruise for a cameo role in his new comedy Extras about a struggling actor. Jude Law will also appear in one episode.

The 43-year-old has also finished writing a script for an episode of The Simpsons.

J.J. Abrams on Mission: Impossible 3
Source: About.com
May 5, 2005

About.com caught up with Lost and Alias executive producer J.J. Abrams and received an update on Mission: Impossible 3, which he will direct.

Abrams confirmed that Carrie-Anne Moss and Scarlett Johansson are no longer part of the cast, but he stayed mum about who will replace them and join Tom Cruise in the third installment.

"The script was rewritten," he said. "I'm a huge fan of each actor that they cast originally, but to have kept the actors when we are reinventing the story would have been an odd process, to say, 'Write a script with these people in mind for characters that haven't been written.' It just felt like we had to start over with a clean slate."

Abrams said they are deep in pre-production and that shooting starts in July "all over the world... it's going to be a pretty big scale." Paramount is targeting a Summer 2006 release for the film.

An Impossible Mission for Lindsay Lohan?
Source: Access Hollywood
May 17, 2005

Herbie: Fully Loaded star Lindsay Lohan reportedly let slip to LA's 102.7 KIIS-FM this weekend that she has a role in director J.J. Abrams' Mission: Impossible 3.

Access Hollywood caught up with Lohan to get an update on the possible role. "I actually met with J.J. Abrams, who is directing (the film)," said Lohan. "I'm a huge fan of.. 'Lost' and 'Alias', so hopefully, we will see what happens. If so, I'll be in training for a few weeks, putting on some muscles."

Regarding how it would feel to work alongside superstar Tom Cruise, the actress said, "It's kind of an incredible feeling, I'm scared. If I do 'Mission: Impossible 3' that is going to be so exhilarating. I'm so excited, I just can't wait to do stunts and get all into it."

Paramount Pictures is targeting a summer 2006 release for the third installment.

J.J. Abrams Wants Felicity for M:I-3
Source: TV Guide
May 18, 2005

While Lindsay Lohan is saying she might have a role in director J.J. Abrams' Mission: Impossible, starring Tom Cruise, Abrams himself tells TV Guide that he's eyeing his former Felicity star Keri Russell for a role.

"There is a role that I think Keri would be spectacular for," said Abrams, "but there's a process I must go through [before I cast her]."

It is unclear whether or not this is the same role that Lohan is talking about.

Keri Russell Accepts Third Mission
Source: Variety
June 15, 2005

Keri Russell will star in Paramount's Mission: Impossible 3, reuniting the actress with director J.J. Abrams, who created Russell-starrer Felicity.

Russell is set to portray a trainee agent mentored by Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt character in the film, set to begin shooting July 18 in Italy. The role had been filled last year by Scarlett Johansson before the film was delayed.

Ving Rhames will reprise his role as Luther Stickel. Michelle Monaghan, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Philip Seymour Hoffman are also part of the cast.

---------------------------------------------

Interesting choice. She's been off the radar since Felicity ended.

M:i:III Wraps Principal Photography
Source: Paramount Pictures
December 6, 2005

Principal photography wrapped in Shanghai on Mission: Impossible III on November 29, two days ahead of schedule. Production began in Italy on July 12, 2005.

Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams stayed on to hold a press conference for the Chinese media on November 30. At the conference, Cruise said, "It's the first time I have visited this spectacular city and our work here went very smoothly. We worked at terrific speed."

They also spoke about how impressed they were with the competence of the Chinese movie crews and how well the two nationalities worked together.

Abrams told media that "close to 20% of the movie takes place in China." Shanghai is the setting for the most dramatic stunt in the film.

Mission: Impossible III is the first large-scale American film to showcase contemporary Shanghai. Filming also took place in the ancient fishing village of Xitang, which gives a fascinating contrast between ancient and modern China never before seen on the screen.

Mission: Impossible III stars Tom Cruise and is directed by J.J. Abrams. The film also stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ving Rhames, Laurence Fishburne, Billy Crudup, Michelle Monaghan, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Keri Russell, and Maggie Q. The action thriller was shot on location in Europe, Asia, and the United States. The film is scheduled for release May 5, 2006.

Tom Cruise returns as Special Agent Ethan Hunt, who faces the mission of his life in Mission: Impossible III. Director J. J. Abrams (Lost, Alias) brings his unique blend of action and drama to the billion-dollar franchise.

Cruise kicked off Mission: Impossible III on the heels of his latest box office smash, War of the Worlds, which was directed by Steven Spielberg and opened worldwide June 29 to rave reviews. To date, War of the Worlds has grossed over $580 million worldwide.

The screenplay was written by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & J.J. Abrams, based on the television series created by Bruce Geller. The film is produced by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner.

Prediction: This is the beginning of the end for Tom Cruise's run as Hollywood heavyweight.

MI 1and 2 were okay, but typically part three of any movie series starts to wear a little thin...add that to his literally crazy antics off the stage, and I think you get a recipe for declining box office numbers.

...and, yes, this very well may be wishful thinking on my part.

Kanye West Set to Record “Mission Impossible III” Theme
Feb-2006
Written by: David Pepose

Paramount Pictures has decided in the third Mission Impossible film, the tapes will not self-destruct ten seconds after listening: indeed, with Kanye West on board, they hope any recordings will be played over and over again.

Paramount Pictures has decided in the third Mission Impossible film, the tapes will not self-destruct ten seconds after listening: indeed, with Kanye West on board, they hope any recordings will be played over and over again. The Grammy-winning rapper, who has done songs like the Grammy-nominated “Gold Digger,” with Jamie Foxx, will remix the classic theme, as U2 and Limp Bizkit did in the two previous film incarnations. “As a fan of Kanye’s work, I was thrilled at the prospect of him contributing his talents to “M:i:III,” said star Tom Cruise. “What he’s done for the ‘Mission’ theme will blow people away.” The film is scheduled to hit theatres May 5th.

Just finished watching it. The plot and the action were great. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was great as the villain

However the romance scenes in the movie were horrid. I'm talking soap opera bad here. Corny lines and overacting galore

Movie was still entertaing even despite the few corny romantic scenes. Worth the price of admission for the action alone

Loved it...a few moments I wish would have been better, but I loved it.

J.J. Abrams sure did this movie though...the character that Ethan uses to guide him to his wife at the end is a total ripoff of Marshall from Alias.

Heck, the movie started with that opening scene, then went BACK a few days..that is vintage Alias/Abrams.

And also the music montage at the end with them all hugging, etc...totally Abrams :)

Good stuff though...the Vatican kidnapping was brilliant.
