1. CAR: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
2. DEN: Marcell Dareus, DE, Alabama
3. BUF: Von Miller, OLB/DE, Texas A&M
4. CIN: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
5. ARZ: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn

Whiz got the answers he wanted and shook hands afterward. He plans to never have to pick this high again, so he wants to take the best potential franchise QB propsect here. Whiz loves to be creative and he loves the thought of having a bona fide running option with a big, powerful and athletic QB.

While draftsite.com isn't always totally accurate about predicting the compensatory picks...they have allocated the #98 (3rd), #170 (5th) and the #248 (7th) picks to the Cardinals...so for this mock, I will take them up on it. I think the Cardinals will more likely receive a 3rd and a 7th. But, for now I will go with what draftsite.com has prognosticated:

38. Jabaal Sheard, OLB/DE, Pittsburgh. Strong side rusher.

69. D.J. Williams, TE, Arkansas. Finally a threat at TE.

98 (comp.). Bruce Carter, LB, North Carolina. Slips due to injury...but the Cardinals feel he can play inside and outside and is too good an athlete to pass up.

106. Kendrick Ellis, DT, Hampton. At 6-5, 340, the Cardinals believe they get a steal here.

141. Rob Housler, TE, Florida Atlantic. Fast, fast, fast. The Cardinals intend to reinvent the TE position this year.

170 (comp). Zach Hurd, G, Connecticut. Surprisingly athletic for a 6-7, 325 pounder.

179. Darvin Adams, WR, Auburn. Cam's go-to WR at Auburn who has been flying under the radar...has size (6-3), good hands and RAC ability.

192. Mark LeGree, FS, Appalachian St. Walter Camp All-American who picked off 22 balls in his career.

248. Karl Klug, DT/34DE, Iowa. High motor winner, a tad undersized...but tenacious.

That's a terrific point, Mitch. I hadn't thought about that. I am not sold on Newton by any means, but if Miller and Peterson are off the board (in this scenario I know only Miller is), I say swing for the fences.

Unless for some reason for this last draft of this CBA they drastically have changed the comp pick process the best comp pick we can hope for is a 7th rounder.

Simple basic rule of free agents lost versus free agents gained. Doesnt matter quality. That draft site has never done comp picks correctly at all.

I was hoping you wouldn't say this. You are always right about the comp picks...but for some reason, I have a sneaking suspicion because of the Karlos Dansby defection, the Cardinals will get some love this year.

Hey Binkar...man, as long as we get Sheard at #38, I'm fine because I think he is special...not a superstar, per se, but much like LaMarr Woodley when he came out...a 2nd rounder who can rush like a madman from the strong side.

Imagine how anxious we will be to get a CBA agreement if we draft Cam Newton. The clock starts ticking and one thing the owners and players seemed to agree on is limiting first round pick contracts to 4 years.

If the Cardinals do draft Newton, can they afford at a #5 salary to start a veteran in his place for two years? I am not so sure they can. What do you think?

If he is drafted at #5, he sits for 10-12 games and starts the last four.

And never looks back!!!!

A Cam Newton experiment would at least be exciting to watch.

I am a big Sheard fan as well. I believe he would be a perfect fit opposite Schofield. Unfortunately, it looks like plenty of other share our opinion and he is rising up draft boards. Though I would love to see him at 38, the chances are decreasing each day.

Mitch, are you sure the cards are going to REinvent the TE position? I'm not sure they even know it was invented yet.

Ain't buyin' what you're sellin' in round 1. If you have the first four right number five should be Peterson OR whomever the Eagles want for Kolb!!!

Balance of your picks make sense.

I have heard it a couple different places, but here is one from Rob Rang of nfldraftscout.com

http://rob-rang.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/13682485/28016949

New York Jets (#30) trade up for OLB Jabaal Sheard

Potential trade partner: Philadelphia (#23) or Baltimore (#26)
Possible price: Third-round pick, possibly with a late-round sweetener

Sheard's stock is on the rise, and he would fit in some 4-3 schemes in addition to projecting to a strong, relentless 3-4 rush linebacker. If fellow 3-4 teams New England (#17) and San Diego (#18) don't snap him up, Rex Ryan and company would trade a third-round selection along with another late pick to make sure the Saints (#24), Falcons (#27) or Patriots (#28) don't put Sheard's name on their cards.

1-Wiz IMO is on the hotseat to win now or at least field a winner in 2012, drafting Newton doesn't allow that. No way Newton is the choice at#5 for that reason. Kill me now if he is & his drafting would show the incompetance of Graves & this coaching staff.

2-The Redbirds must add a OT sometime in this draft to possibly cover for the loss or cutting of Levi Brown after this season.

3-Could handle having Sheard & Carter on this team

4-The Cards never use the TE in this offense...why bother with 2 TE's?

Lotsa' valid points in my book. If Newton is the man (ugh!)...Whiz bought himself additional years as that would have to be a unanimous decision by the dark suits...I just can't see that under any circumstances. Ditto for Gabbert.

I don't know Bucky, Vince went 8-5 as a starter as a rookie. Matt Ryan was 11-5. Joe Flacco was 11-5. Mark Sanchez 8-7.

Oh wait. We can't run the ball or play defense consistently.

Nevermind.

I like it all except for Newton. Peterson has to be the choice if he's there. Lost in all the QB talk is we really don't know what the Cards think of Skelton. They say they like him but I wonder what they view his ceiling as. If they think he has the makings of a top 15 starter then why take another QB project that high? If they view him as a solid backup then I can see QB at 5.

I am not Cam Newton Fan, but I do respect people opinion of him why they think we should draft him at #5.

Personally the Cardinals should take Ryan Mallet or Patrick Peterson if the Cardinals think they can get Mallet in the 2nd. Like I said all along when you are picking in the top ten of every position a need.

Kolb!! Seriously Why is everyone thinking he is worth the 5th pick??? People thought the Eagles were nuts when they took him with their 2nd in 2007. What has he done to warrant such a pick....oh yeah NADA, more picks than TD's, 60% comp, 76 rating. Really wasn't that great last year in his starts. He is worth a 3rd at best more like a 4th. No QB on the trade right now is worth the 5th. If we trade it we are dumber than dirt and in panic mode. We have no reason to panic with our division.

The problem is that right now anyone who isn't Dereck Anderson or Max Hall or John Skelton looks like Peyton Manning to Cardinal fans.

I have a feeling if Gabbert is available he will be the Cards pick. Hopefully he turns out better than fellow Mizzou alum & former #1 pick Steve Pisarkiwiez :D

Given CKW's track record with QBs other than Kurt Warner- Leinart, Brian St.Pierre, DeWreck Anderson,Max Hall and John Skelton- that's 5 guys who have failed in just 2 years, I doubt it. I'm more on the draft defense bandwagon than ever before.

Hey KenW, you guys are horrible at developing QBs. Run the ball and play defense. OH NO!!!!!!!!! I've turned into THESMEL. :p
