No. 4 Mitchell hung on to defeat Lincoln, 55-51 and knock out the No. 1 seed in a thrilling, back-and-forth game.

Mitchell senior Markus Talley led the Kernels in scoring with 22 points and made six 3-pointers despite fouling out with 1:45 to play in the game.

Lincoln opened up an 8-2 lead early behind two made 3-pointers from sophomore guard Brody Schafer, who turned to the Mitchell bench and showed them how many points he got for the jumper. Then Kernels guard Markus Talley took things into his own hands, going on a personal 9-2 run to give Mitchell an 11-10 lead.

Patriots junior forward Sam DeGroot took over for a period in the second quarter, scoring seven of nine Lincoln points during a two-minute stretch. Each of those baskets took an incredible level of shotmaking ability, but not be outdone, Talley responded scoring two consecutive threes as Mitchell went on a 9-0 run near the end of the quarter. Patriots junior guard knocked down a midcourt heave as the first half expired to cut Lincoln’s deficit to five points heading into halftime.

The Kernels were red hot from the field in the first half. Mitchell shot 55% from the field and 7-for-13 from three. On the other end the Kernels held the Patriots offense to 42% shooting. They also outrebounded Lincoln by five in the first half.

Talley had a game-high 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting and made five 3-pointers in the first half. DeGroot led the Patriots in the first half with eight points.

The third quarter started slowly for both sides, with neither team able to score a field goal through the first three and a half minutes. Lincoln eventually established momentum, summoning up a 6-0 run thanks to four consecutive points from Ericsson. Just like in previous runs, Talley hit a three to completely stop the Pats momentum. After his three the Kernels went on to score five of the last seven points of the quarter.

Mitchell will face either Brandon Valley or Harrisburg in the AA state championship game on Saturday, March 22 at 7:45 p.m. MT.
