I especially want to hear Selig's responses ("Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God?")... ;)

and then the Player's union via Donald Fehr. That should be squeamish.

I won't be watching it because I'll be watching March Madness! Took the rest of the week off because this is the best couple of days in college basketball.

Jim Bunning for Commissioner of Baseball!!

He said, 'you can do what you decide to do about steroid laws, but messing with the collective bargaining agreement means changing federal labor laws, and that'd be a can of worms.' He also is firmly behind not just asterisks, but expunging the records of anyone proven to have used steroids.

I would hate to see a paranoid and draconian agency like the USADC get into baseball.

They need to emphasize HGH more than they seem likely to do - not as sexy as 'steroids.' And that congressman who said he'd like to see Gov. Schwartzenegger summoned to testify is right on.
Let's look at role models, after all, and cultural mixed messages that go way past baseball.

Yep!

Because of recent events, I just used Netflix to rent Pumping Iron. Figure now is a good time to watch this again and do a write-up on it.

McGwire makes early headlines with emotional statement that essentially takes the 5th:

Choking back tears, his voice cracking, McGwire said he knows that steroid use can be dangerous and will do whatever he can to discourage young athletes from using them.

"What I will not do, however, is participate in naming names and implicating my friends and teammates," said McGwire, who ranks sixth in major league history with 583 homers.

ESPN article

he seemed kind of like a jerk to me when he was asked about using the olympic rule for baseball... saying he's retired so he can't answer.

I think anyone who has used should be really ashamed, they could have prevented others from getting into the league...not fair at all...

Schilling is coming off as the biggest phony up there. Maybe Jose can take a poke at him in the ante room.

Well, I said I was going to watch the basketball games but I'll admit I have been switching back and forth.

All I will mention right now is I have no respect for Mark McGwire. He won't say anything about his past, not even about using andro, but he'll help today's kids from using steroids. To me he is a hypocrite. He is looking very bad and guilty in my mind.

Canseco is looking bad also. His book says one thing and he is saying the opposite today. I liked what Stephen Lynch from Massachusetts told Jose when he said, "I can't wait for the sequel," referring to his book.

We just received the dvd "Ray" from Netflix.

'Rather watch that Oscar winning performance than the ones in front of the committee.

I heard parts on the radio but why was Schilling going on and on about the ALS foundation??

I give him major props for his work/fundraising but, what did that have to do with anything?Or, did I hear something taken out of context?

All the performances for the committee were scripted long ago, and guaranteed when the participants all brought lawyers with them. Since NONE of the past behavior can be proven, ALL stuck closely to the script to make sure there were NO legal blunders.

Anyone expecting actual revelations was thinking that a "maverick" would speak out in the same vein that Canseco ranted in his book... Canseco would have .. HAD he been granted immunity, but that too was scripted long ago in the negative.

Political posturing is the main point

Potential positives result from greater exposure to the problem, which may spark either baseball to increase vigilance to clean up its act and/or Congressional legislation that will provide additional enforcement policies/legal tools.

Watched much of it off and on all day. What REALLY struck me - during one break, ESPN ran a commercial for extreme wrestling - all these grotesquely pumped up guys - and I had to laugh - how is crucifying baseball going to make a dent? Baseball players aren't the real role models! WWF and football have much more power over kid's minds.

I didn't think Schill sounded any phonier than most of the others (though saying'alleged author' for Canseco got old and silly.) He didn't play dumb like Sosa, self-advertising like Canseco, or act pathetic like McGwire. He was making a pre-emptive strike with the ALS and melanoma stuff because the committee had been harping previously about how ballplayers apparently don't realize or accept that they are role models, blah blah. He was giving his credentials i.e., "I'm not just a dumb ballplayer. And you don't have to lecture me about role model stuff, I use it for ALS and all these other things."

I thought Palmiero came off the best, but mainly because he took a strong offense regarding not using, and otherwise didn't say much. I felt a little sorry for McGwire - talk about publically hanging yourself out to dry.

Initially Rob Manfred sounded very good - clear, aggressive, 'here's your mistaken assumptions, ladies and gentlemen' but once Selig started talking, and Fehr, and then Manfred saying the language of the agreement hadn't been worked out until last week even though they SAID they had an agreement in January... heh heh.

I'd been afraid that because it was so late mlb would get off the hook, and relatively speaking they did, but give credit to the congresspeople - they stuck around long enough to show their disdain for the guys that run baseball.

Bottom line though?

It was all grandstanding.

Why would you feel sorry for McGwire? He lost all credibility today. He brought this on himself. He is a loser in my book. Any of the players that used steroids to gain that extra edge are losers in my opinion.

What I thought was funny (not ha ha) was that he was almost crying throughout his opening statements. Several times he really choked up. Why? One of the few explainations in my mind is that somehow he sees himself as being peripherally responsible for kids' deaths from steroid use. Why else would he jeopardize his reputation as the big, tough slugger? Don't know. Also thought Sosa's comments were less than sincere. But maybe it's just his usual mucking up of the English language. He really needs to get a private tutor and work on it.

We were at the game today so missed the live stuff except for the last hour when the big boys were being grilled. Didn't see any of the players.

Completely off this topic, but mentioned last night how Counsell and Clayton were acting like robots. Well today Craig was back to his more normal 2001 form. Made a couple of good hits and several nice defensive plays. Clayton, however, is truly an embarrassment. After missing/just standing and watching the ball go by on four plays my son finally yelled out (very loudly) "Hey Royce, it's okay to get that uniform dirty". Management should be scared of this guy, real scared. Was this another Puke boy acquisition? :soapbox:
