Today's American families come in all shapes and sizes. Shot from the perspective of an unseen documentary filmmaker, this comedy takes a modern look at the complications that come with being a family in 2009.

Starring Ed O’Neill, Ty Burrell, Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and surrounds three families, one traditonal, one gay couple, and one with a young woman and an old man.

Surprisingly enough, I thought this was pretty funny. Have to see if they are able to sustain it.

How can you not love Ed O'Neill. I'll have to catch this one.

First two episodes were decent. I was really annoyed by Phil in the first episode and thankfully they toned down his 14 year old boy dialogue. I'm still not a fan but he has had some really good scenes. Ed O'Neil's wife in the show is the worst character in my opinion, but what can you do? Ed O'Neil is absolutely fantastic. So many great lines and plays the character perfectly. I gave this series a chance because of him and I have been pleasantly surprised. It has potential, hopefully it can tap it to become a really good show.

Funny we watched the debut and last night and were pleasantly surprised. Last night we watched 4 new ABC shows in a row. the first 2 were horrible, Kelsey Grammars' new show is awful. Then "Middle" had some mildly funny scenes but was otherwise bad.

I like Modern Family and I have to admit so far Cougar Town(right after) is funny too. I didn't expect to like either show but I did. Ironically I watched Modern Family largely because Sophia Vergara (I call her Viagra) was in it but I agree her character is the worst part of the show. not her fault the character is just very poorly written and very stereotypical.

I assume the first 2 shows won't last long but I think American Family and Cougar Town have a chance if they can keep up the quality.

Wife and I tried to watch Cougar Town, but the end of the first episode with the BJ on the pool deck was a bit much, not to mention the undying overacting by Courtney Cox...it was just too much.

Modern Family was fantastic yet again, really digging this show.

And I thought The Middle was much better than you thought, but maybe I'll think differently next week.

Just watched the second episode on Hulu. It's great. Ed O'Neill is in classic form and his character is dynamite. He has a gift of being able play the extremely flawed, but lovable character. The bigger gay guy, Cameron is a riot. I'm a little cool on, Phil, his juvenile behavior is over the top and almost cartoonish. They need to tone him down a bit.

I hate Ed O'Neill, but he owns this type of role.

Yep it's a really good show. I will say that it's the only show on ABC that night that I think survives.

Hank gets worse every episode, In the Middle is so so and Cougar Town got annoying really quickly. I liked the first Eastwood but we already quit watching just got old fast.

It is a good show but last night's episode was terrible. Phil continues to be just flat out annoying and I really hope they calm him down a little bit, because he makes his scenes nearly unwatchable for me.

I'm caught up on this program now and am loving it ... Phil is a little tough to take

i think they can still keep him akward without going over the top

his wife is pretty good though and cameron is a riot

i loved the scene where they were at costco and when they locked their kid the car

also when cameron revealed that he played offensive line and that he would completely pick up ed o'neil

this and the league give me hope for new comedies

Wow, this has to be the best comedy that has premiered maybe since the premiere of the Office.

Edward Norton and Elizabeth Banks as guest stars? Brilliant.

I knew Edward Norton was in the episode, but I couldn't stop laughing when he first showed up at the door.

His accent was fantastic.

I still think Community is the better show overall. Can't wait to see what they do tonight since last week's seemed like a good season ender.

I like community i think abed and troy make that show tho and they just aren't given the proper attention, i don't find winger(joel mchale) funny at all. I would be content with a spin off of just abed troy and annie. I think Community is the third funniest show that night after the office and 30 rock. There was talks early on of it getting canceled with parks and recreations.

Out of the two shows, Community had the best single episode. However, as a whole, I think Modern Family is better.

I really enjoyed this season and look forward to the next .... it's funny how Phil morphed into one of my favorite characters

I think it's a good cast with good chemistry and some of the stuff they write in there just cracks me up

Stuff like the moon landing or the various positions he was in with the dog butler

It was picked up for a 2nd season if you didn't hear. There are just so many small moments that make me laugh. I do like McHale but you are right Troy and Abed are the best part of the show. Chevy Chase is also hilarious in the show.
