Most likely the FO would be happy to get it done as soon as they're finished with the draft. But McBride's agent is incentivized to wait as long as possible before the start of the season, so that there's an opportunity for TE market value to be raised by other TE contracts. I'm not sure whether there are any other big TE contracts expected this year, however.
IMO he’s going to be the highest paid TE in NFL history. Market isn’t going up much for him.

Agreed - no point in waiting, even for his agent - he is going to set the bar. If anything OTHER players want the McBride contract set as quickly as possible to set THEIR price points...

That's definitely what they're going to ask for, and it's reasonable within budget and for his value to this franchise. To be fair, when Kittle signed his extension in 2020 (highest-value), he was a 2-time Pro Bowler and 2-time all-pro with 12 career receiving TDs. McBride has one Pro Bowl and six receiving TDs.

TJ Hockenson signed his extension (highest guarantee) in 2023, he'd made two pro bowls (in four seasons) and scored 18 career receiving TDs (12 in his first three seasons).

I'm not saying these are good arguments to nickel-and-time Trey -- I love Trey; he's arguably our best offensive player. But these are interesting negotiating points.
