Just watched the game again...this time more slowly and deliberately in order to key on several payers. Here's what I saw:

The Players Who Stood Out or Surprised:

1. QB Kurt Warner. He looks just like he did in the Super Bowl.

2. WR Steve Breaston. He played a great game and was the go-to WR in this one. In fact, had Troy Palamalu not dove into Breaston's legs from behind on the deep post, Breaston probably would have caught that ball.

3. C Lyle Sendlein. Played very solid football throughout.

4. RB Tim Hightower. Ran tough and got every inch of what he could get, turning some sure losses into positive gains. The coaches ought to tell him to think of every run as a first and goal from the 5 yard line...because when TH is determined to take the ball past a spot, man is he good.

5. TE Dominique Byrd. Smooth, sure handed and fluid in this game...and showed RAC ability and desire.

6. DE Calais Campbell. Has to be one of more athletic, tall DEs one will ever see. He needs to learn how to bend and flex his torso more when he closes in on the ball, but he is active and persistent. I was thinking if the Cardinals ever had a NT who would command a double team, Dockett and Campbell would be very difficult to stop.

7. LB Gerald Hayes. This was the best he's played in traffic for a while...he really stepped up and made plays.

8. LB Karlos Dansby. Played with a bang and with nifty awareness.

9. SS Adrian Wilson. He looks unstoppable out there. He is in tremendous shape. Has to be one of the toughest and strongest safeties ever.

10. FS Antrel Rolle. Looks much more at home and is finishing plays well.

11. CB Michael Adams. For such a diminitive player, this kid packs a punch as a tackler and battles ferociously in coverage. Yes, he got beat that one time...but, as usual, he had no safety help deep. On other long balls thrown his way, he was perfect. This kid can play. He is a gamer.

12. LS Mike Leach. Not only are his snaps even tighter and faster than Hodel's, he gets downfield on punts quickly and made one great tackle.

13. P Ben Graham. What a game he had in this one. Booming long ones when needed and pooching short ones to near perfection.

14. T Herman Johnson. Went back and watched him closely...you know this kid may actually turn out to be a solid RT. His reach and hand punch are very good and his feet were fairly crisp in this one.

15. QB Tyler Palko. Provided a huge spark and energy. Got away with some forced passes, but moved around great and made things happen.

16. WR Onrea Jones. Hey, talk about creating a spark.

17. WR Lance Long and RB LaRon Stephens-Howling. Gotta love these kid's hustle, energy and competitiveness. They are little sparkplugs, both of them.

18. S Keith Lewis. Very noticeable when he was on the field. Got to the ball a couple of times and ran a nice corner blitz.

19. DE Kenny Iwebema. made a couple nice tackles and looked quicker and tougher than last year.

20. Michael Ray Garvin. Not only did he showcase his speed, he has a good sense of where the daylight is on kickoffs...a little less so on punts, but that's to be expected for now.

Good Hits:

1. Jerheme Urban. Best block of the day, nailing the Steeler DB after Breaston had caught a ball near the sidleine.

2. Herman Johnson. Great tackle on the interception.

3. Leonard Pope. Same...saved a TD, at least for one more play.

4. Michael Adams on Mendenhall...perfectly timed and delivered tackle.

5. Ali Highsmith...late in the game he raced through the line and laid the hammer on the Steeler RB for a 3 yard loss.

Concerns:

1. All in all the first defense was good...but, as might be expected, there was more than a few plays where the unit was confused or lined up late. This was happening with CP throughout the year last year. Hopefully Bill Davis will get this straightened out.

Plus there was still a case where it appeared the Cardinals only rushed three on a 3rd and 10, when Big Ben converted it to Limas Sweed.

2. The 2nd team offensive line. Only Herman Johnson, IMO, played consistently well. Brandon Keith was decent. Ben Claxton was getting blown back at times like he was on roller skates. Melvin Fowler finally came in when Tyler Palko did and made a big difference. Elton Brown looks way overweight...in fact, at his weight and with his current girth, it wouldn't seem possible for him to be the backup LT. At LG Brown's play was uneven. At LT Oliver Ross really struggled.

Curiously, I don't recall ever seeing Trevor Canfield in the game. Nor did I see Carlton Medder or Brandon Pierce. The way Elton and Oliver played it might be worth it to see what trevor and Brandon can do.

3. The pass rush...still a real issue and one that may ultimately determine the fortunes (or lack thereof) of this football team. We ought to expect that it will take the rookies Brown and Davis time to assimilate into the defense and the speed and strength of the NFL...but...aside from Okeafor's couple of quick edge rushes, and Campbell's missed sack of Big Ben at the goal line and one quick rush from Davis...there was not much pressure to talk about. Look at what the Steelers were getting from their 1st and especially their 2nd unit!

The Two Eye-Opening Facts Give By The ESPN Crew:

James Harrison was cut four times. Wow. Unreal.

Warner had a 135 QB rating last year off play-action. And what makes that even more amazing is that other teams weren't exactly fearing the Cardinal running game, were they?

Personnel Wishlist:

1. Pass Rusher DE/OLB

2. Backup LT

3. Backup SILB

4. Backup DE

But what are your thoughts on BSP?:p

Just joking. Good to get past that other stuff to talk about the other 79 players on the team, which you did in the other thread it was just lost among the other stuff.

12. LS Mike Leach. Not only are his snaps even tighter and faster than Hodel's, he gets downfield on punts quickly and made one great tackle.

It was so noticable on how fast he got down field it was eye popping for.

14. T Herman Johnson. Went back and watched him closely...you know this kid may actually turn out to be a solid RT. His reach and hand punch are very good and his feet were fairly crisp in this one.

His feet is what I noticed the most. Good initial kick back in pass pro. It was very noticable especially with his horrid slow feet we saw at the senior bowl still fresh in my mind. Goes to show that 40 pounds lighter really can make you more agile even though your still a huge 360 lbs.

19. DE Kenny Iwebema. made a couple nice tackles and looked quicker and tougher than last year.

I didnt notice his quickness more then I noticed his strength. Surprisingly strong for his body. No wonder they werent afraid to play him at DT his senior year in Iowa even though he was to light to handle it normally.

I think that would be expected. Although its a similar scheme and verbage its still different. See if it improves as time goes by.

Curiously, I don't recall ever seeing Trevor Canfield in the game. Nor did I see Carlton Medder or Brandon Pierce.

I dont recall seeing them actually play. Do we know if they did or not?

The pass rush...still a real issue and one that may ultimately determine the fortunes (or lack thereof) of this football team. Brown and Davis wont be pass rush threats until next year IMO. Takes a year for a converted DE to learn that spot. Took Harrison 4 years, Woodley didnt learn it until year 2 as well. Its just such a big change to what they know, mentally and physically. I dont think we will see a pay off from those two until later in the year, which might be a good time when Berry and the other two old OLB's start to wear down. We will see.

Would like to have seen what Dykes could have done.

Mitch, you saw it about the way I did --- I loved the way Leach always seemed to get downfield.

Tim Hightower --- really might just be the guy Whiz thought he was when he replaced Edge with him.

Lyle Sendlein ----- WAS very solid against the Steelers front, and it looks to me like Fowler is going to make a push to at least be Sendlein's equal.

Michael Adams ----- they say dynamite comes in small packages, and I love the explosiveness of this kid. I love his stickiness and the way he refuses to cower when he is picked on. I especially like the way he sells out to make a tackle. Gutsy kid !!!!

Herman Johnson ----- if this kid continues to show the quick feet that he already has, he may become something very special. How many other huge OL have we seen refuse a back to get to the corner on him.

Michael Ray Garvin -----I hope this kid sticks, and I hope he isn't too badly hurt. He and Toler could help make our backup secondary something special in the future.

Ben Graham ----- how about a (work in progress) being this talented. If he continues to learn and perform like this, he could end up re-writing the record books. Watch out Ray Guy.

On top of everything, with one or two exceptions, I REALLY like the way the guys put forth the effort ----- there was very little dogging it out there, and it is obvious that they were paying attention to detail. I like where the coaches have this team right now, and can't wait until this new class gets some real reps under their belts. There seems to be some GENUINE talent in that bunch.

Mitch, Did you watch the G-men play Monday? I'm sure you will remember me wanting the Cards to draft English or Sintim. Sintim was all over the Carolina Qb's in that game: registering a sack, forced fumble and about 6 pressures. Either one of these guys would have been spectacular in the redbirds 3-4 defense. :bang: Hope I'm wrong, but I hope this teams lack of outside pressure doesn't bite this teams behind in the next few years.

Great point, Bucky.

We argued left and right as to whether the Cardinals should take a pass rusher or a RB at #31...and right now that argument is looking more and more pertinent.

I was pleased to see more play action being used instead of Kurt being in the shotgun most of the time. We averaged 4 yards per rush and that seemed to do the trick at least to me it looked like Pittsburgh was biting on the play action pass. IMO If we can keep that up this year, I think we can look forward to an even better offense than we had last year.

I was and I'm still concerned with where the pass rushes is going to come from. If I'm not mistaken, we did not get one sack that game. I know during the preseason, they run the so-called vanilla defense, but I hope our scheme is much better and will allow us to get a lot more pressure on the quarterback.

Saxon ----- I totally forgot about the play action. We (far too seldom) utilized that last year, and I was happy to see Whiz break it out for the Stillers. Would love to see much more 2nd and short go play action, and if the pass fails, we can still pass or run for the new set of downs. I think this prolongs time of possession, and thus helps to rest the D. Would like to see much more of it in the future.

Put me on this bandwagon.

Sintim was my #1 choice for the Cards last April

While Sintim visits opposing QB's our #1 visits the nurses' office.

I rewatched the game too and I thought Davis showed some signs in the second half of having some burst on the pass rush.

He almost got to Dixon several times.

Brown really didn't show me anything yet but Davis surprised me.

I was pretty pissed when the Redbirds didn't really add anyone to help them up front on defense for the upcoming season. The only thing that seems to have changed is the scheme. Cody Brown is a project while I felt Sintim and English could have paid immediate dividends this season. The Gmen have a pretty good track record of adding speedy pass rushers to their mix don't they. That in itself should say something about how good Sintim will be.

Keep in mind though Sintim was going to have a leg up on everyone, because he didn't have to switch positions. Was always a pass rush LB, in a 3-4 no less. So he might have the immediate impact, but who will have the higher ceiling once those converted DE's catch up in terms of knowing the LB position. Its why I liked the guy so much, Virginia might be the only college team that you can find 3-4 D players right out of the box, playing in Al Grohs pro style 3-4 defense. Also remember that he is playing behind a 2nd or 3rd string defensive line that could probably start for most teams, that's how scary deep that from 4 is.

Amen Joe. Thats why I still to this day question the Wells pick.

What is even more impressive is that Breaston got hurt early in training camp and sat out most of the first practices, but yet still came to play in the preseason game.

Biggest waste of talent ever was probably Daryl Blackstock, a Virginia 3-4 guy, that some idiot, who shall remain nameless, drafts to play in a 4-3.

What were the Cards thinking taking guys like Blackstock and Pace when we were running a 4-3?

I think the most important point in this post is the first one.

Warner looking like he is in Super Bowl form. I completely agree (and I don't always agree with Mitch on Warner issues).

If you are playing the Cardinals his year, and are a defensive coordinator, and saw that game. I would have expected to hear a "Awwww, ----!"

Cause if Warner is still going like last year, we will do some serious damage this year.

3. Backup SILB

I think Chase Bullock might fill this role. If you watch the game again (twice might be enough, LOL) you will see he was mentally a little confused, but he moves really well for a man his size. He looks promising to say the least.

i've learned over the years to put no stock ,whatsoever, in how any player looks in pre-season games. It's completely meaningless. The only thing i really ever notice is whether the player(rookie) looks like he belongs,or not, and that's sometimes hard to distinguish. The only two guys i remember standing out are Boldin, you knew he was going to be good, and Buster Davis, who was so atrociously bad that you knew he'd not make it.

I mean, other than Leinart looking bad for a half against Oakland, does anyone remember anything of significance from last year's pre-season games. I don't.

i don't. I said at the time that Leinart's game was meaningless and he should start. I guess it's a good thing Whiz didn't think that way :) seeing how Warner played out.
