More talk of Peyton Manning in Miami

Posted by Michael David Smit ProfootbalTalk on February 4, 2012, 8:40 AM EST

The talk about the Miami Dolphins as the landing spot for Peyton Manning is not going away.

We’ve already heard that the Dolphins are interested in Manning if he becomes available, and now comes word from Omar Kelly of the Sun Sentinel, citing an unnamed NFL source, that Miami is on the short list of places Manning would like to play. Manning will almost certainly become a free agent before March 8 because the Colts will decline to pay him a $28 million bonus due that day.

Manning and his wife own a place in Miami, and they’d reportedly like to live there. From a football perspective, it makes a lot of sense: The Dolphins are a team that could win immediately with an upgrade at quarterback. On defense and special teams Miami was solid last season.

Perhaps the best news for Manning is that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has insisted the team will get better at quarterback and that he’ll pay whatever it takes.

Obviously, any time we talk about Manning’s future teams we’re getting ahead of ourselves, because we don’t even know if he has a future: Although doctors have reportedly told him that his neck is sufficiently healed that it’s safe for him to play, that doesn’t mean that he’s had enough nerve regeneration that his arm is — or ever will be — strong enough to play quarterback at a high level.

But if Manning can play, the chatter that he’d play in a Dolphins uniform isn’t going away

I don't understand this Miami talk... From the surface yes it seems like a place Manning would consider, but when you actually look at it, I just don't see it..

For one he would be in the same division as the Jets/Patriots, so the chances of actually making the playoffs is significantly smaller than other options...

Secondly, their Oline gave up the 3rd most sacks in the league this year despite being the 29th in the league in passing attempts! To put that in perspective this year when a Miami QB dropped to pass 1 out of every 8 times he was sacked, and that does not include the amount of times he was hit... The next highest percentage int he league was St Louis 1/10.. And as far as their running game, they had the exact same Yards per attempt as the Cardinals at 4.2 tied for 18th in the league...

Lastly, Peyton Manning demands accuracy in routes and effort. You have to be in the place when he throws it and fight for position. Brandon Marshal just may be the worst WR at this in the upper escutcheon in the league. Can you imagine Manning having to deal with that Head Case for the last few years of his career? The first time he yells at Marshal for not running the right route, Brandon will sulk and not try the rest of the game. As a Denver fan I saw this all too often...

In the end, sure Miami on the surface seems like a good fit, but I just can't see Manning choosing that as his final swan song int he NFL..

Who is he throwing to there?

That division is ridiculous.

Makes sense on a 50,000 foot view, but like the Jets, once you look close I just don't see it.

Maimi fans are saying the same thing as us. Their OL sucks, who do they have besides Fitzgerald, tough division in the upcoming years. I always thought it was going to be Arizona vs Miami for Manning's services.

ManningWatch: QB interested in Miami?
"Miami has made it no secret that the team is looking to upgrade at quarterback. There are several reasons Miami makes sense for Manning. If healthy, he would instantly make Miami a contender. The team already has a solid defense, a star left tackle (Jake Long) to protect him and solid weapons at receiver, such as Pro Bowler Brandon Marshall. Additionally his favorite target Reggie Wayne (University of Miami) is also a free agent"

Well, we can guarantee 9 games (8 in AZ - 1 in St. L) under a dome. Case closed. ;)

Going on the road every year in NY, NE, and Buff. can't be that appealing. As well as other cold climate away games.

We have one or two a year, tops.

Omar Kelly
Sun Sentinel

Miami Dolphins receiver Brandon Marshall is in Indianapolis for the Super Bowl festivities, but don’t assume he’s not there hunting for a quarterback.

Marshall used his MVP performance at last weekend’s Pro Bowl to showcase his ability, and make a public plea for the Dolphins to get an elite quarterback.

Wouldn’t you know Marshall has linked up with soon-to-be free agent Peyton Manning at the Build Our Kinds Success program on Friday.

But, would Manning share a meal with Marshall as he did with Fitz?

I agree that, if any WR or other player could lure PM to sign with their team it would be Fitz. When you look at his history vs. others (Marshall) he wins every time....

Well S. Ross also stated that he wanted Jeff Fisher and stated he will pay what ever it costs. Hmm Fisher is in STL now. Dont believe there front office is a good functing unit. Payton also wants stability in the coaching staff and front office. Miami's is disfunctional. Bet thats a turn off for Payton.

Brandon Marshall is one of the best talents in the game.

I am a fan of:
B. Marshall
Jake Long
Davone Bess
Bush & Maybe even D. Thomas
Wake
Dansby

They have skill at many positions.... And there is a lot to like.

The biggest issue they have at home is rain (remember Manning in the SB against the Bears? He performed well below his standards).

Then there is the Jets, and Pats twice a year (killing chances at a 1st round bye) followed by a playoff run that would always include the Ravens, Steelers, & Pats/Jets (for a 3rd time).

We have a MUCH better home venue....MUCH better in-division schedule....MUCH better shot at a bye in the 1st round...... 9 (11 next year with Minny & Atlanta) games guaranteed every year in perfect conditions......And finally, the best QB he faces in division every year is Sam Bradford!

I cannot think of any reason he wont put us at the top of his list unless he gets lowballed by the Bidwells.

i think that Payton will be looking for a place thats had a coach for a few years. we won our division twice and went to a super bowl in the last several years. if he looks at last years games and sees how we came back the second half of the season with the qbs we have he just might consider us. he will be playing in a state of the art stadium and a fan base that has sold out every game since the stadium opened. i think Michael would be willing to spend the $ to get him here if Payton is interested in coming. besides i think Payton wants to go to the team that would have the best chance to go to the super bowl. i believe that if we have Payton Manning as our qb i could see us going back to the super bowl. Kurt Warner proved to me that with a seasoned quarterback anything is possible. :) jmho

He's a headcase, IMO. Well, and I guess in his opinion too as didn't he either have officially or self diagnose with BPD?

talented, sure. but off the field issues dog the guy. I have an admittedly biased under-appreciation of him.

Stephen Ross is “infatuated” with idea of signing Peyton Manning

Posted by Josh Alper ProFootballtalk.com

Everyone expects the Dolphins to be in the market for a new starting quarterback this offseason.

If he’s available, Peyton Manning could well be at the top of their shopping list. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald writes that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is “infatuated with the idea” of signing Manning should he part ways with the Colts. Per Jackson, Ross and the Dolphins believe they have a good chance at landing Manning because he owns a condo in South Beach.

Waiting to find out if Manning shares their infatuation and if he’s physically able to lead the team could be a risk if the Dolphins choose to go that way. If the Manning watch goes much beyond the March 13th start of free agency, the Dolphins will be in danger of losing Matt Flynn, the best free agent that we know will be on the market, to another suitor. That risk is worth it for a healthy Manning, but the team will need to get creative if they want an upgrade on Matt Moore next season without either Flynn or Manning on their roster.

.... and Stephen Ross was once "infatuated" with Harbaugh and Fisher.

agreed. But he's definitely a target worth throwing to regardless. Kinda reminds me of Moss, has issues, but not as bad as TO. Fitz is still the best WR in the game though. Both, on and off the field

@AdamSchefter: Peyton Manning is willing to create a contract that would contain no guaranteed money up front and would be incentive laden with bonuses.

Manning and Fitzgerald are the perfect match. Both at or near the top at their positions and both workout and preparation Nazis.

Yup! Those Nazis could put a game plan together. But, in the end, their micromanaging, meglomaniac coach screwed it up big time! ;)
