Supposidly, tomorrows Tucson paper article

By Charles Durrenberger
Arizona Daily Star

One of the biggest recruits in Arizona history made it official Thursday night: Devin Ross is a Wildcat.

Ross, the nation’s No. 4 cornerback according to Scout.com recruiting service, chose the UA over USC and Oregon just five days before national signing day.

“I love Tucson, I love the state of Arizona, I love coach Mike Stoops and I’m proud to announce that I will be attending Arizona,” Ross said.

The 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pounder from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. made his choice on FSN’s Arizona Sports Report, three weeks after canceling a planned announcement at the U.S. Army All-American Game.

That is when the Trojans joined the mix for Ross, whose family has moved to Avondale. Ross in enrolled at Agua Fria High School.

“We have a lot of young guys, a lot of talent, and a good recruiting class this year,” Ross added. “I believe we have a national championship on the way.”

Ranked No. 71 in the national top 100 and ninth in California by Scout, Ross had four interceptions and a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last season.

He was credited with 60 tackles (48 solo), and also rushed for 199 yards and a pair of scores. He averaged 23.6 yards on five receptions, including two TDs.

He drew four out of five stars in ranking systems set up by Scout and Rivals.

“Devin is one of the top cover-corners out West,” said Rivals national analyst Jeremy Crabtree. “While he might not be the tallest kid, he does have great hips, the ability to turn and run.

“He’s also gone against some great receivers in his time in high school. So he should be able to make the jump pretty quickly to the Pac-10,” Crabtree added.

Ross has been clocked at 4.40 seconds in the 40-yard dash, and possesses a 36-inch vertical leap.

Ross is Arizona’s 25th verbal commitment. Coaches cannot comment on recruits until their letters are received on Feb. 1.

Two recruits are nearing decisions, while another has crossed off the UA.

Cleveland Jones, a 6-foot-6-inch, 310-pound offensive lineman from Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, said Thursday that he favors Arizona over Washington.

The Cats are also in the running for four-star receiver Jamere Holland from Woodland Hills, Calif., who is down to Oregon, USC, Arizona and Mississippi State.

Dallas Carter High’s Demarcus Love, the nation’s No. 68 offensive lineman according to Scout.com, chose Arkansas over Arizona, Kansas, Kansas State and UTEP.

Its really quite funny seeing some USC fans totally bad mouthing Ross saying he's an idiot and all of this...I guess the past 5 years of USC football have really gotten to their head. The second they lose a top recruit, he's no longer worth it. Bah.

This is sweet... Expect these kinds of recruiting classes from now on as long as Stoops is here.

Just some reading for all the Cats fans out there...

The commitment of Devin Ross was a huge get for the Wildcats. Obviously, it is always great to land an elite level recruit, but Ross’ verbal on Thursday night meant more than just landing a talented player.

Getting Ross not only means the Wildcats land a four-star player. Sure, they get a guy who is rated as the fourth-best corner back in the class. That is big time. The Cats have gotten some good recruits the past few season under Mike Stoops and his staff, but they have never landed a player who was a top-five player at his position.
That alone is important, but getting Ross means more.
Sure he’ll come in and push juniors Wilrey Fontenot and Antoine Cason. He along with Cam Nelson and Michael Turner will really solidify the Wildcats defensive backfield that has taken some hits to their depth with graduation and transfers.
Ross is a huge get when it comes to the future of Arizona football, but he is just as important as a symbol as he is a football player.
By landing Ross the Wildcats are serving notice to the Pac-10 and the nation that they plan on recruiting on a national level.
Ross become the third player that the Wildcats landed that USC really wanted. JC players Louis Holmes and Gabe Long were important of recruits for the immediate success of the Wildcats, but getting a high schooler, a high schooler from Southern California nonetheless, is huge.
To be fair, the Trojans got their fare share of players that Arizona wanted. They landed guy like C.J. Gable and Shareece Wright. They landed several other players that the Wildcats did not get in on, but to steal away a handful of players that the Trojans made a push for is important.
The Cats got Ross over the current big dog in the Pac-10 and a team in Oregon that was ruling the roost prior to the Pete Carroll juggernaut. In fact, the two teams finished first and second in the league this year. The Duck’s lone regular season loss was to the Trojans and they combined to win 21 games.
The commitment sends a message to the Pac-10 that Mike Stoops has ratcheted up the recruiting another notch. His first year he got players that were looking at Kansas State, Iowa State, Arkansas and Utah. Good, decent programs, but not the heavy hitters. Last year the Cats upped the ante and beat out schools like UCLA for Adrien McCovy and Eben Britton, Oklahoma State for Brandon Tatum and Texas for Xavier Kelly.
Those are certainly all solid to spectacular programs, but this year the Cats got elite players. Everyone wanted Louis Holmes. Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Tennessee and LSU were all in the mix with the Cats and Trojans for the 5-star DE. Texas and USC came calling for Devin Ross late in the process. Derke Robinson was a Texas commit for a time. Terrell Reece had Nebraska and Steve Spurrier clamoring for his services.
While Pete Carroll certainly has his eye on what is going on in Tucson, he isn’t exactly shaking in his boots. USC may have wanted Ross, Long and Holmes, but they are still bringing in a top-five class. They are still loaded.
It is the rest of the Pac-10 who has to wonder what is happening in the desert. Currently the Cats are ranked 18th in the nation (the Ross commit has not been factored in) and third in the conference. The Wildcats have as many four star recruits as UCLA and Cal and more than any other school in the league not named USC. The Wildcats and Trojans are also the only teams with a five-star recruits, though it must be noted that a few committed players have recently been downgraded.
Another benefit is that Ross played and excelled at the Army All-American game. While it would have been huge if Ross had announced at the game, it was still good PR for the program. This marks the second straight year the Wildcats have had at least one player at the game, putting their name right up with the big boys of the sport. Ross’ announcement came on Fox Sports in Southern California and that was big enough. There is Ross posing with a UA hat and helmet on a broadcast getting beamed into the homes of potential future recruits. He essentially broadcast the Arizona recruiting message on a cable network that caters to fans in the USC and UCLA strong hold. More than likely Ross will come in and challenge the older players, but be the team’s third corner back. He’ll have an impact on the program on the field this year, but his importance will grow over the years. Other players in this class could have a bigger role next season, but few players in this class will have as big of an impact down the line.

Cats Top 2006 Class with Another 4-Star

It is well known nationally that Mike Stoops and his coaching staff can recruit with the best staffs in the country. Already this recruiting season they have landed such studs as 5-Star defensive end Louis Holmes and –Star defensive tackle Gabe Long, both from the JUCO ranks. Now tonight Arizona fans got more good news, this time from an absolutely huge high school recruit.

4-Star cornerback Devin Ross announced his decision to attend the University of Arizona tonight on the High School Spotlight show on Fox Sports West 2. CatTracks.net was able to speak to Ross after he taped his announcement.
““I love everything about Arizona. I love the coaches. They are specialists with DBs and I am a DB. I love the campus and I love Tucson. That is why I basically committed to U of A.”
For Ross it came down to two conference rivals in Arizona and Oregon. But, after narrowing things down, another high profile school jumped in the mix and tried to woo Ross late.
“I loved the visits to both of those schools,” Devin said of Arizona and Oregon. “Then USC jumped in kind of late, but by then I had pretty much made my mind up. They were the ones that were recruiting me the hardest and the longest and I felt comfortable with both of those places.”
Devin said that he had his mind made up long ago and was set to announce at the Army All-American game earlier this month but after USC came on strong and offered it made him stop and think, even about an official visit.
“I considered a visit for this weekend, but I am committed to Arizona,” Ross said. “I made my mind up, and thought about, and realized that the U of A is the best place for me.”
With Arizona coming off of back to back 3-8 seasons and with two teams that finished with double digit wins one would think that the previous year’s record would matter. But for Ross that simply wasn’t the case.
““The record doesn’t mean anything to me,” he said. “Everything changes year to year. We will all play hard and hopefully I can help bring this team to a national championship and to national prominence.”
One of the main reasons that Ross chose to commit to Arizona is the high profile reputation of the Stoops brothers when it comes to coaching defensive backs.
“They are really good coaches,” he said. “They are defensive specialists. Everywhere they have been they have had one of the top defenses in the country. We talked about football, and outside life. We developed a really good relationship.”
One thing that Devin has yet to do is talk to the Arizona coaches about his potential role with the program, or at least his initial role.
“They have not really talked to me about my role,” said Ross. “I know I want to come in and try to start and to come in as a leader and to see this team break through and take one of the leadership roles.”
Another reason for choosing Arizona, Ross said, was the Willie Tuitama effect. “I talked to the quarterback, Willie, a lot,” he said. “He would tell me how the program is doing and how everybody is ready to win and how much big time talent they have coming in and that we are going to win some games this year.” Ross’ commitment comes at the right time for Arizona. He is the 25th and presumably the final commitment in what could be the best recruiting class in the history of Arizona Football.

This is interesting... It'd be pretty sweet if we could still land Jones and Holland to cap off the recruiting season.

Congrats on the get.

I didn't think you guys even liked me, much less wanted to know what my opinions on your recruits are...Unfortunately, that "quote" isn't my opinion...I will chime in a couple times a week, if you truly want to know my opinion, otherwise maybe just once a week to comment on your "great" class, just to keep you your feet on the ground...

Oh, I can't help it, I thought you guys might be missing me...

Why is Ross retaking his SAT this weekend?

I'm sure Chris Bonney has a great reason for it...

Are you freaking serious? You seriously think that it's uncommon for recruits to not retake their SAT's??? Get real, will you? All of you ASU fans would give your left nuts to have Ross on your team and you know. I think you're just a little sour that Dirk has another medicore recruiting class while Stoops is 2-2 in classes in his first two years here. And you know what? It's gonna be like that for a LONG TIME, so get used to it.

I'm already used to seeing 3-8 seasons...I'm just wondering why a commit had to retake the test? Is he also not qualified?

And no I wouldn't give my left anything for a football recruit...

Actually, no I wouldn't give a left or right anything for any recruit...Maybe you would?

Yet, you keep dancing around the question...Has Bonney not given you an answer yet?

Maybe because the guy is in Ohio, and has no idea what is going on?
