I heard this mentioned on a radio sports show today.

When Eli Manning threw his tantrum and told the Chargers not to draft him, we all know San Diego cut a deal with the Giants. I had forgotten how lopsided it was.

Chargers ended up with Rivers, Shawn Merriman and Nate Keading with the draft picks that came from the deal.

BTW, all 3 made the Pro Bowl. Eli is floundering.

No wonder Ernie Accorsi is retiring as GM of the Giants.

Don't forget the trade of picks to Atlanta that was Vick for LT. The Chargers
were basically built in thse two drafts. WOW!!!! Could we ever get that lucky.

Wasn't Drew Brees part of that too?

The San Diego front office knows what they are doing. You have to like how smart their moves have been.

They built up a lot of karma after trading up for Ryan Leaf.

Yep. The Chargers got LT, the pick that became Brees, and a player or two in addition, I think.

I believe Brees was actually with the Chargers own pick in round 2--not one of the ones Atlanta gave up.

MMMM Karma Pie.... was it served with really expensive ice cream from the money the cards saved over the years?

Mmm, that might be true. It was so long ago I can't remember.

I only remembered lauding the Chargers and laughing at the Falcons. I had predicted that Brees would be far better a QB than Vick ever would. I admitted I was wrong for a while, but boy, has time proven me correct on THAT one!!!

Still has to be the Herschell Walker deal.
Not if the Bolts rattle off a couple Super Bowls.

What's comical is at the beginning of this decade the Chargers' reputation or lack thereof was similar to that of the Cardinals. San Diego as a whole absolutely despised the Spanos family and their right-hand man whose name escapes me but from memory was comparable to Rod Graves in performance and status. The franchise then hires a real GM in John Butler who brings with him AJ Smith who took over after the former's death and sure enough the Chargers have become a model franchise.

Didn't the Cards have a shot at Eli and "screwed it up" by beating Minnesota? Not sure if my memory is correct, but damn it would be great to have the guys the Chargers have.

I never thought I would say this but thank god for Josh Mccown. He saved us from Eli. I'll Take Fitz any day over him . I'll take Leinart over Rivers too. Remember this is not Rivers 1st year he is in his third and this is Leinarts rookie year. I can't wait to see Leinart next year.

Brees was the Chargers' own 2nd rounder. (First pick in the 2nd)

That draft was like the one last season, where nobody really wanted the 1st pick(Unless you wanted Vick), so the Falcons didn't have to pay that much.

The Falcons paid a 2nd,a 3rd rounder and All-Pro KR Tim Dwight. The 2nd rounder was Tonui Fonoti and the 3rd was CB Tay Cody.

We would never have taken Rivers. We would have kept Eli or traded down like the Chargers.

At #4 we would have taken Fitz, Sean Taylor or KW2 - in that order. Remember, the Chargers were the only team that were that high on Rivers. They coached him in the Senior Bowl and simply "fell in love" with him.

Nothing against Rivers but I am just glad as hell we never took Eli with the first pick that would have been ours if we beat the Vikings in the last game of the season . I am happy as hell with the way the draft turned out that year.

....and I wanted Stephen Jackson so much. Every time I see him play I get vomit in my mouth. The guy is a stud and a half.

But to digress. 3 All Pros for a flop QB is so lopsided. Bolts 13-2... Giants 7-8. Rivers All Pro... Eli Manning all flop. How does a guy perform so poorly when he has Tiki Barber, Jeremy Schockey, Plaxico Burress, Amani Toomer, Sinorice Moss et al?

Jackson wasn't rated anywhere the top 5, so he wasn't in the picture no matter what.

On Eli....

I have personally talked to one of the other key players for the Giants. Off the record, he told me that Eli is very disliked by his teammates. His draft stunt made the other players think that Eli put himself and his ego before the team and game. Since then Eli has only confirmed that - and made him even more unpopular.

I won't mention names, since it was (way) off the record.

Neither was Fitz IMHO. Roy Williams or Jackson were on my wish list.

Fitz was definately up there. That draft was the craziest ever, because there were 6 different players rated as the best player by the 32 teams:

Eli
Ben
Fitz
Williams
KW2
Taylor
