Go Cardinals! Yay!!!
Whoever was responsible for advertising this movie is hopefully pumping gas in Wichita right now. Actually, I think they went on to advertise Club Dread. I would love to have heard their idea for the commercials "Okay, let's show the climax of the movie at the end of the commercial! That way everyone knows how this ends!". Idiots.
I say this because this is a very fun (albeit cheesy) action movie with just the right amount of gruesome monster violence and everybody I know who passed on it did so because of those stupid commercials. I love this movie. I try and show it to as many people as I can and more often than not they wish they'd have seen it in the theaters, too.
Plot:
When a band of ruthless hijackers invade the world's most luxurious cruise ship, they're shocked to discover the passengers have mysteriously vanished. But that doesn't mean they are alone! Something terrifying is lurking just out of sight: a deadly force from the unexplored depths of the ocean that begins to snatch the horrified intruders one by one!
This was written and directed Stephen (The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, Van Helsing) Sommers so it should be of no surprise that this is filled with cartoonish action sequences. The characters are mostly walking stereotypes but for this type of movie that's very forgivable. The only one who really stands out is the superhot Famke Janssen.
What does it for me in this movie are the monsters. I'm not sure if they were inspired by actual sea creatures (though obviously smaller versions) or not but it's a great - and more importantly ORIGINAL - idea. The amount of violence usually surprises people - definitely not for the weak of stomach.
If you're a fan of the tone and action of The Mummy franchise or if you're a monster movie fan and you never saw this one, give it a chance.
