Why pursue both Rivers and Wilson?

In total, we might be moving 5 valuable picks for these 2 guys.

I dont like the "Let Wilson sit and groom him in 2-3 years". Because what if 2-3 years comes by and we find out he sucks? Thats 2-3 years wasted and we're back to square 1.

No, thats BS.

Colin Kaepernick, Luck, RG3, Ginger Mcgoo in Cinci, Year 1 Cam, Year 2 Ponder, Russell Wilson.

All these guys were green and killed it. Either you have it, or you dont.

FACT CHECK!!! Kaepernick is in his second year, Russell Wilson is in his first.

Futhermore, the "what if" game is the best way to hamstring yourself against doing anything. The idea behind the thread is acquire a solid veteran QB, upgrade the interior offensive line in round 1, and then trade up to get a QB of the future. This way we aren't putting all of our eggs into one basket.

The problem is, who do you trade for? Quality QB's do not become available through FA or trade (please don't cite Peyton Manning). This is the same tired philosophy the Cards have been using for years and it hasn't work. I'm tired of the Kolbs, Andersons and Shaun Kings of the world. This team continues to do things that don't work. This site always seems the think were a player or two away. This team is far from competing for a championship. They need to draft a QB high and play him. Invest in all areas of the Oline through FA and whatever you don't fill there you draft. The only way you solve the QB situation is through the draft. Of the starting QBs in the league only 10 are not 1st rd picks, and two of those are Brady and Brees. The rest are teams like BUF, CLE, AZ and KC. The chances of landing a successful QB outside of the draft are slim.

Pretty sure this thread ia about acquiring Phillip Rivers AND Tyler Wilson.

I said Green, I didnt say rookies.

Why do you think I included "Year 1" Cam and "Year 2" Ponder.

That sit Rookie QBs thing only works when you have a long established Vet QB. Rivers would struggle his first year or 2 here, just like any other veteran who changes teams. So by the time he "gets it", we are supposed to be starting to integrate the kid. It doesnt work.

Our only option is to draft our franchise QB. Period.

If we would trade for Rivers then I doubt we need a rookie QB right away. If you think Wilson is the man then just draft him and keep Kolb, He isn't as fragile as many percieve him to be, yes he go hurt again but face it. the Oline that started this season would get a tank injured.

As far as needing a ton of upgrades I don't see that. With a legit top 15 QB our team is
6-3 at least. The Oline has gone from pitiful to needing some help since Batiste was benched.

I get the obsession with fixing the QB position short and long term but it doesn't all have to happen this offseason.

Year 1 Cam didn't win anything and look at him this year. Using Ponder or Kaepenick, he's played 1 game, doesn't help your claim. Andy Dalton isn't a franchise QB, He's a solid middle of the road player but nobody is thinking anything elite with him.

For the bolded part, you mean like Manning is, and Brees did in NO. Rivers has shown he can play on the level of those guys.

I agree, the best way is drafting a franchise QB but there's not an Andrew Luck in this class and, these days, unless you're drafting top 3 overall in a great QB year, there's probably not a very good shot at drafting a franchise QB. I probably shouldn't use Luck because he's a rarity but you knw what I mean. Let's say the Cards are drafting 9, who is the "franchise QB" you have going to the Cards? If there was a Luck in the draft, the team drafting #1 is not trading the pick and, in the remote case they would, the cost would be so prohibitive that you are crippling your draft for the next few years.

If we ever want to win, or see Fitz come close again to his immense potential, then yes it does.

Or Favre when he went to Minnesota. Or Tavaris Jackson when he went to Seattle. Or Matt Hasselbeck when he went to the Titans.

IMO trading for Romo would be a much better move for the Cards. Rivers I believe is older & more of a INT turnover machine the last 2-3 years.

Tony Romo: Born April 28, 1980. Career INT % 2.9; 2012 INT % 3.3
Philip Rivers: Born December 8, 1981. Career INT% 2.7; 2012 INT% 4.1

With over half the NFL teams in dire straits at the QB position, NO team will trade their starter unless they can RAPE their trading partner. I believe the Cardinals will need to continue to draft a QB until they get it right. Everyone is somewhat high on Wilson & I'm ok with that even though he's regressed because of the mess at Arkansas. Another guy we need to look closely at.....Ryan Nassib, Syracuse University. He's been developed nicely by Doug Marrone, the same guy who was the OC with the Saints & had a big hand in the development of Drew Brees. Nassib's stock is rising because he's accurate, throws over the top, has excellent technique & a quick release. On top of that, he a has a super high football IQ. Syracuse changed their entire offense with 10 days before their opener & yet he absorbed the changes & grew markedly better as the season progressed. I think we can get this guy in the 2nd round! The Bills love him!!

I've been on Nassib this year. He's my 2nd favorite QB after Wilson. He's really been playing as well as any QB in the country the last 4-5 weeks.

I like him too, but better than Wilson.

Ok I'll cite Drew Brees and Kurt Warner instead.

Brees was just out of surgery and the Saints took a Flyer on him. Everyone cried on this board when the cards picked up Warner and said he was done. Your argument is weak at best.

Because there are a lot of QBs who did not 'kill it' the first year. Rodgers, Aikman and Eli Manning did not exactly light everyone up the first chance they got if I remember correctly.

And none of them became available either. You just proved my point.

Great plan........in Madden. San Diego is not going to trade a top QB away. Nice thinking though.

I would like to see what the 49ers are going to do with Alex Smith. I believe Smith is what the Cardinals need under center. I was all for getting Alex Smith during the offseason.

I would draft Tyler Wilson if i was thinking about drafting a QB this offseason.

With all do respect to everybody on this thread, trading for a Qb like Romo, Rivers, Alex Smith, Flacco or drafting the best QB in college, whoever you think that may be, would all take a giant step backwards under a Whizenhunt regime.

Maybe a guy like Rivers would do a little bit better than the rest because he would scrap the BS play called and change out of it.

But overall there has not been a single QB in the entire tenure of Whizenhunt that has improved. Not even a little. Whiz was a benifactor of a resurgent Kurt Warner who had just enough WR weopons to be dominant and the balls enough to run his own ship.

Alex Smith is winning football games for the 49ers. He can win football games throwing to the WR the Cardinals have. Smith takes care of the ball and is one of the better QB in the league. I believe he has thrown for 13 TD and 5 INT. He has a passer rating of 104. Cardinals would be so lucky to get that castoff.

I hear ya, but come on can you imagine Smith with Wiz as his coach. If you want to see what Smith would be like as a Card watch tape when Singletary was their coach. Smith is doing well now because Harbaugh is a smart enough to coach and design game plans to Smith's strengths and not the other way around. Smith also rarely throws 45-55 times a game which is what Wiz loves to do. Smith would be a train wreck with Wiz as a coach.

They both were quality QBs. So my argument isn't weak at all. Or are you claiming neither one was a quality QB? That would be ridiculous since both have been to the SB since signing with Arizona and New Orleans.

And then why throw out Manning who was also coming off surgery?

Brees signed a 6 year $60 million deal with the Saints. That's a heck of a flyer.

The Texans traded for Matt Schaub.

Finally nobody cried on this board when the Cards picked up Warner that I remember.
