What puzzles me the most is how Harbaugh was there at Duke to witness Manning throw and unless I missed something no Cardinal coach or front office person was there. There have been no reports that indicate the Cardinals ever watched him throw.
It puzzles me too to hear that Manning has been offered carte blanche in Tennessee where he is the second Elvis...and yet...he's out there still auditioning for the Broncos and 49ers.
if the 49ers pull this fly by night heist off---I wonder what kind of fit this will be, and I am starting to think that it actually might work in the Cardinals', Seahawks' and Rams' favor. Here's my thought:
What worries me the most about SF is their running game behind their very good, young offensive line. If Manning comes in and he puts his own offense into motion, the whole continuity of their offense will change. Frank Gore becomes more of a decoy in Manning's offense, which is fine by me.
Then you have the prospects of Manning throwing to three headcases in Crabtree, Davis and Moss. Davis is the one to worry about most in play action, and we know Manning loves throwing to the TE. But, any DC worth his weight in salt will realize that jamming Davis at the l.o.s. both to disrupt the timing of the pass option and to set the edge versus the running game might make the play action pass a little more manageable to defend.
Manning is even more pass happy than Whiz. He was a great fit with Whiz. Not so sure about the fit in SF.
In addition, what happens to the suddenly scorned Alex Smith? I will tell you this---I would offer him a one year deal and throw him into the mix because I think this guy is turning the corner and in playing for a contract he might light it up like a man possessed. And if I gauge him correctly, nothing would satisfy him more than torching the 49ers. If Smith does thrive in our system, it's easy to let Kolb go next year.
Who knows? Maybe one of his best friends was Adam Snyder.
As for Kolb---in some way I am surprised that because of his concussions and his erratic play that the Cardinals elected to pay him the $7M bonus---but what I think the brass is thinking is that affording under $11M to the QB position between Kolb and Skelton is reasonable, and that it is worth the roll of the dice for another year. I get that. I just can't see this guy holding up---but will be as happy as any of you if in fact he does.
With regard to FA---I love what the Cardinals have done thus far. Signing Levi Brown and Adam Snyder to cap friendly deals is a big first step.
I hope that we will be pleasantly surprised with the next several moves. Those will be big moves in terms of getting this team well equipped to make a run at the NFC West title.
