What puzzles me the most is how Harbaugh was there at Duke to witness Manning throw and unless I missed something no Cardinal coach or front office person was there. There have been no reports that indicate the Cardinals ever watched him throw.

It puzzles me too to hear that Manning has been offered carte blanche in Tennessee where he is the second Elvis...and yet...he's out there still auditioning for the Broncos and 49ers.

if the 49ers pull this fly by night heist off---I wonder what kind of fit this will be, and I am starting to think that it actually might work in the Cardinals', Seahawks' and Rams' favor. Here's my thought:

What worries me the most about SF is their running game behind their very good, young offensive line. If Manning comes in and he puts his own offense into motion, the whole continuity of their offense will change. Frank Gore becomes more of a decoy in Manning's offense, which is fine by me.

Then you have the prospects of Manning throwing to three headcases in Crabtree, Davis and Moss. Davis is the one to worry about most in play action, and we know Manning loves throwing to the TE. But, any DC worth his weight in salt will realize that jamming Davis at the l.o.s. both to disrupt the timing of the pass option and to set the edge versus the running game might make the play action pass a little more manageable to defend.

Manning is even more pass happy than Whiz. He was a great fit with Whiz. Not so sure about the fit in SF.

In addition, what happens to the suddenly scorned Alex Smith? I will tell you this---I would offer him a one year deal and throw him into the mix because I think this guy is turning the corner and in playing for a contract he might light it up like a man possessed. And if I gauge him correctly, nothing would satisfy him more than torching the 49ers. If Smith does thrive in our system, it's easy to let Kolb go next year.

Who knows? Maybe one of his best friends was Adam Snyder.

As for Kolb---in some way I am surprised that because of his concussions and his erratic play that the Cardinals elected to pay him the $7M bonus---but what I think the brass is thinking is that affording under $11M to the QB position between Kolb and Skelton is reasonable, and that it is worth the roll of the dice for another year. I get that. I just can't see this guy holding up---but will be as happy as any of you if in fact he does.

With regard to FA---I love what the Cardinals have done thus far. Signing Levi Brown and Adam Snyder to cap friendly deals is a big first step.

I hope that we will be pleasantly surprised with the next several moves. Those will be big moves in terms of getting this team well equipped to make a run at the NFC West title.

I can't see Manning hurting any team he plays for.

I wouldnt mind Smith to compete with Kolb.

I think we will see a much better Kolb this year.

Vernon Davis has gotten his crap together and IMHO, can longer be considered some type of negative dynamic on that team. He's a leader and acted as such all of last season.
Crabtree and Moss are, have been and always been head-cases... However, if there is one person I would bet on to get 2 ******s to play productively, it's Manning. Would you really be surprised to see these two class A jerks contribute in a highly productive way with Manning at QB?? Really??

And I wouldn't go near Smith. Not for one year... not ever!

Mitch, if they do pull this off it might just work against the Niners because of their style...which is dead on. But, I still don't think Manning goes there & gets to run "Peytons offense".

One of my concerns would also be familiarity with the scheme if PM where to get to run his offense. I had the same concerns if the Cards would've gotten him. It takes time for all players involved to get on the "same page" schematically because an offense isn't built overnight!!!

Still don't think PM is a Niner. I was also almost certain from the start he would don the red of cardinal either...though they kind of sucked me in by Tuesday & Wednesday I thought it was over.

Move on, no hate...GO BIG RED!!!

Totally agree, but I can see the whole Manning fiasco pointing Kolb in either direction mentally & I understand that.

No puzzle to me as to how they showed up at Duke on the QT: Tom Condon

Bottom line on Smith is that he's looking for a 5-year deal and that's the stumbling block in his negotiations. I suspect that in some Machavellian way Condon believes he can both create a bidding war for PM's services between Tenn and Denver and get his "soothe the ego" deal for Smith in SF.

make no mistake, any team a healthy Manning plays for will be infinitly better for it offensively...Gore will be catching more passes...

Didn't Davis get two excessive celebration penalties in the playoffs?

I don't think he's quite matured, but I agree that Manning would probably set him straight if he went there.

The 49ers and the Broncos were 31 & 32 in pass attempts last year. Both of them would have to massively restructure their offenses. I think he would make either team significantly better, but TN's offense seems like the best fit.

I think SF jumped in just to get us out. All we can hope for is that Manning chooses another team and Smith is so butthurt he looks elsewhere.

Manning in SF is a guaranteed playoffs for however long he is there whether they run his system or Harbaugh's. Then there better be a bounty on his head. Our front office must be pissed. I really think we were the front runners but SF ruined it.

I don't remember if he got those penalties... and so what if he did?? I'm no Davis protector by any means, but, just because he may have celebrated a bit too much in the endzone certainly doesn't make him some sort of negative malcontent...

Great post

Excellent post and analysis. I think Harbaugh is a power football style coach and he will intuitively clash with the pass happy Manning. I'm also of the opinion that Denver isn't the right fit and that he ultimately ends up "home" in Tennessee. Hope the 49ers do piss Alex Smith off. I'd take him as you stated.

Well, Mitch, it's done...

best to get back to reality and go forward I guess.

I was hoping that they would just cut Kolb and move on, but I also understand it is hard to admit a mistake with this regime.

But, if Kevin proves me wrong and leads this team to victories and the playoffs, I'll gladly say "Pass the crow, please.". But, I don't think I'll be tasting any crow through his run here. He is, simply, another horrible QB the Cards have paraded through here.

Good post Mitch.

1. Regarding Manning - I don't care. Just show me who we got and who we're playing, and let's go. He ain't a Card; best wishes in his future endeavor (wherever that is). Not our problem.

2. Regarding Kolb - It's amazing that we tend to be more optimistic about Peyton's health hoping to rely on his latest medical reports but continue to be paranoid about Kolb's concussion without seeing the results of his latest medical tests?

I'm concerned about the concussions but let's learn more about what the medics say before rushing to judgment and crying "Doom!"

Kind of lost in the mix is, considering AZ's dome, natural turf, pass-oriented offense, warm weather, and all-world receiver, it was probably the optimal situation for Manning.

He will be less anywhere else than he could have been here.

Thanks for the cup of coffee Payton. Hope we get the chance to beat your @ss this year.

What the niners did was basically wait for us to commit to Kolb before they revealed their Manning intentions so that we would not be a possible landing place for Smith. So they made sure that we ended up with neither Manning nor Smith.

That is why their actions are insidious. Now we can hate them even more.

The perfect scenario, for me, is Smith getting up tomorrow morning pissed and firing Tom Condon. He then hires a new agent and leaves SF. Denver or Tenn sign Manning and the 49ers are without a QB.

Kolb has gotten injured to the point of missing games roughly once in every 4 starts.

Manning has gotten hurt to where he missed time once in 208 starts.

I have a lot more faith in Manning staying healthy and avoiding injury than Kolb, who seems to be a magnet for it.
