Firstly, let me say that I wish this game could be played without anyone ever getting hurt. But that ain't gunna happen so........wishful thinking. Now on to my thoughts.
Our most serious injury is to Boldin. Man it would have been nice to see him carry on from last year......but we can hope that he returns 100% at some point during the season. Like others, I've resigned myself to the fact that he might very well be gone for the season. Trying to find the silver lining here is hard.......but we have Fitz and BJ and the additional work that they will get will help in their development. All is not lost.
Losing Shipp is our second most unfortunate injury. He was primed to have a good season. My hope for him is, looking forward he can come back and earn a spot next year. Like others, my inner ear is telling me that it is going to be hard for him, especially if we use a high pick in the draft to get another RB. Looking for the silver lining here........Anderson and Scobey got some extra reps throughout camp and in the pre-season and gave Green the opportunity to see what they really had. Unfortunately for them, neither demonstrated enough to stop Green from making the player acquisitions that he has over the last week. Our RB situation was improved with Hambrick and Cason but likely at Anderson and Scobey's expense. The bottomline......we'll enter the season with more strength at RB than we would have otherwise......including if Shipp hadn't got hurt.
John Hodgins wasn't going to figure much in Green's system. I can see a trade candidate here once he's healthy in a month's time.
Wakefield is not a loss. All he was doing was muddying the waters and making it difficult for Green to see the "forest thru the trees" regarding what had to happen at the DE position. We wasted some time on him, that's all. The silver lining here is clear to see. Zellner will add more appropriate depth to the position (his strength being pass rushing) and will allow for KVB to be used more sparingly in run defense situations. Having another pass rush threat will take some of the burden off Berry as well.
Kenny King will be missed. He would have been the quintessional UT in Green's scheme, no if and or but's. This leaves us pretty darn thin talent wise at the UT position..........but always looking for the positive, Darnell Dockett gets a full year to learn and absorb as he develops into a bone fide player. Even if Kolodziej doesn't get cut (which I think he will), it keeps him off the field as a starter anyway.
Now for the serious stuff. I'm afraid Starks has become the 2004 version of Tommy Knight.......maybe the same for Dexter Jackson. Always rehabing each week from bumps and bruises that force them out of action consistently all year long. Where we once had a promising secondary, we now have legitimate reasons to be concerned.
I know we seem to have started camp behind the 8 ball health wise, but the silver lining..........we have had time to get some of our walking wounded back in time for the regular season. Some other teams are in worse shape than us.
Come out of the Broncos game injury free fellas.
