Nash hurts back during practice

The Arizona Republic
Jan. 18, 2005 12:50 PM

Steve Nash, practicing for the first time since suffering a bruised thigh in a game Friday, collided with Leandro Barbosa on Tuesday afternoon, injuring his back.

Barbosa injured his left ankle and was on crutches. Details of the injuries were unavailable, but the status of both players is uncertain for Wednesday's home game against Memphis.

Joe Johnson would start at point guard for the Suns if neither Nash nor Barbosa could play.

The Suns (31-8) have lost four straight games and led San Antonio, their opponent at America West Arena on Friday night, by a half-game in the Western Conference.

Son of a B*(%^(^%*(&^%%(! what is going on. Man we need to sign someone ASAP! I guess they are going to have to start Hunter now.

Wow. At this rate, the Suns might as well bring Randy Livingston back. It's not clear that any backup PG could do as much damage as Barbosa has.

Hopefully Nash's MRI comes back negative. It might not even have been Barbosa's fault, Nash was having trouble stopping from the thigh bruise.

Nash had problems stopping after the injury. Normal for a deep bruise, a person has to slow into a stop instead of stopping on a dime. If the injury is still lingering, it is defintiely possible he was trying to slow into a stop again.

This was repeated a number of times by the Suns announcers during the last 2 games without Nash.

Praying Nash is OK, but if not, why don't we look at playing Q at point rather than Joe J? Forgive my ignorance, but Q played the point for Clips all those years and in high school. Just a thought.

I have seen Q bring the ball up a few times he has very little ball handling skills. I would much rather have JJ bring up the ball.

Looks like Barbosa pulled a Randy Livingston. This just adds to my frustration with this kid. He is too wreckless in the game and now in practice.

That is a little unfair. We have absolutely no information who caused the collision if anyone.

About Q playing point for the Clips, I am pretty sure that didn't happen much. Andre Miller was there for a year, Marko Jaric, Keyon Dooling ect. They have had lots of Pgs, not sure why Q would have been playing it.

Randy injured Googs during a game this has nothing to do with Barbosa and what happen in practice. I dought this was one person's fault it is part of the game.

Look, it was just our time for injuries. We have had no major injuries to our starters. We were very lucky.

At this point I just want to make the playoffs and be healthly...

You are talking like we are a mid seed right now. Even after goin 0-4 during the last stretch we still have the best record in the league. No need to lower expectations. I still stick with winning the pacific resulting in at least a top 3 seed.

q never played point for the clips and he was a low post presence in high school. i don't know where you found the q as a pg information. if it exists, i'd be interested to read it.

I hope the Suns don’t use this latest setback as an excuse, the way they have the past few games. Yes, everything is easier when you have an MVP candidate running the point, obviously. But the “supporting cast” on this team still includes a wealth of offensive talent. Even without a proper point guard, they should still be able to move, cut, pass, and make shots. The days of scoring 110+ are probably on hold until Nash returns, but this team should still be getting into the 90s on a regular basis.

Not at all. This was one of the greatest runs I have seen. I've enjoyed this season more than any in recent memory.

Right now we are no better than the team you saw during the last half of last year. At this point we will be fortunate to win 50% of our remaining games. Maybe 50 wins which should be enough to get us in the playoffs. Ok by me.

You have to remember we embarrased a lot of teams and they will no doubt kick us when we are down. If Nash is out for an extended period of time we will struggle to win another 15 games which means we still make the playoffs.

If Nash is out for a while, we will adjust but it could be too late. If he returns when good to go, it will take some time to readjust to having him on the floor again.

After watching the last few games, the other players are not cutting to the basket because they likey will not be rewarded. I see players standing around watching the point guard dribble. This is the same problem we had last year.

WTF???

It just happened today?

Man...!!!!

Nash hasn't missed many games with the Mavs but now he may miss more than 4-5 games. sigh....

It seems like we are going to lose to Spurs again. I was hoping Nash could get back tomorrow, kick Big Bear's arse and get our confidence back before meeting the Spurs.

WTF is going on??

Was talking to a friend in Chicago about the bad news and he was asking why we don't play Q at the point. I guess he followed him in High school and at Depaul. I was merely asking the question for him actually. Thanks for the clarification. I will inform him he is a moron. LOL.

Didn't the Suns play 8 games in like 11 days?

Suns might need a PG but the Suns did win 50% of their games late last year and have added Richardson, Hunter, Vroman, etc. McDyess played well late last year but Hunter is more of a defensive presence, Suns matured a bit, Nash and Barbosa won't be out too long...

Suns would be kept up on 10 day contract PG's available and Suns have a bunch of Draft Picks (1st and 2nd) along with Milos Vujanic available for Trade.

Tallball could be a good thing to try for at least a few games. With both Nash and Barbosa out - Vroman, Voskuhl, or Lampe could get start to bring the defensive presence (Hunter) off bench.

Playing so many games in the last few weeks, Suns could start Maciej Lampe to give team added offense and let the athletes on team stay fresh - not to concentrate too much on offense and defense?

Stoudemire, Marion, Richardson, Johnson are excellent athletes but with Johnson at PG - let Marion, Richardson, and Jacobsen play at wings and Hunter, Outlaw, Vroman, and Voskuhl should have energy at the big positions, Stoudemire could once again dominate at PF.

Maybe I should stick to Draft. I need to watch Pistons game and the bench seemed to have decent stats. This could be Lampe's time to step up offensively...
