As I sat and watched this clip, it saddened me a bit. If we can't parley Nash's brilliance into one or two Titles, I don't think this franchise ever will earn a championship. When Nash does shut it down in 3-5 years, the league is going to miss him. Even the great point guards like Magic, Stockton, Thomas, etc. didn't have what Steve has had the past 3 years. What IT is, I'm not sure... but it seems to be 'all' the tools. He can drive, shoot, pass, dribble, lead, step up in big moments, and handle the media/pressure... I can't think of anything that he doesn't have that a PG would want.

What a crime that Dirk will win the MVP this year... a real shame.

This is a short article on the top of the front page in todays Phoenix paper.

Another reason to be a Nash fan

We love Steve Nash because the following story will surprise nobody.

Early Thursday morning, just hours after the Phoenix Suns beat the Lakers, Nash walked off the elevator at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Phoenix.

It's not clear why he was there, but he was not injured, so it's safe to assume he was visiting somebody at that quiet time.
Regardless, standing in the lobby waiting for the elevator was Beth Miller, my mother-in-law.

Miller was returning to the hospital for another night with her husband, who has spent most of the past two weeks in intensive care after surgery.

Miller, a big Suns fan, was shocked to see Nash but managed to congratulate him on his victory. He thanked her and smiled.

Then she told him, almost as an aside, that the Suns games were one of the few things helping to brighten her days during a difficult time.

Nash didn't say anything, but he stepped toward her and gave her a big hug.

"It meant a lot at the moment," Miller said.

If Nowitski has any class, he'll say something like this when he accepts his MVP trophy.

I don't deserve this trophy. It doesn't belong with me. I will never be able to look at it and feel pride.

So I am giving it to Steve Nash, with a plaque saying, "YOU'VE EARNED THIS, MY FRIEND. DISPLAY IT NEXT TO YOUR TWO OTHER MVP TROPHIES."

That's what I'd like to hear.

uh, Magic has 5 freaking rings, multiple regular season MVPs and FINALS MVPs - i think it's INCREDIBLE hubris to suggest Nash has something Magic or Isiah didn't. I mean, Magic is without a doubt the greatest PG of all time and one of the top 3 players of all time. And Thomas was the heart and soul of the Pistons who won two titles, and who overcame legendary Celtic teams and the Lakers. To suggest he didn't have "it" either is pretty off-base.

Steve is incredible and has been a savior ina league that had become dreadfully boring, but he has something Magic doesn't? I don't think so.

Maybe he was referring to Magic himself who actually admitted as much on national television the other day.

that's because Magic is and has always been too humble to compare himself to the greats. Do you believe Nash has "it" where Magic didn't? I think that would be a damn hard argument to make. I mean, as a ROOKIE, the guy played out of position and won a close-out game by himself, starting at C scoring 42 points and grabbing 15 boards, while dishing out 7 assists... ON THE ROAD. If that ain't "it" I don't know what the hell is.

I think comparing Magic to Nash or vice versa is unfair. Magic was in a league of his own and may even be the best basketball player of all time. Also Magic was 6'8" and could play all five positions on the court well. I heard Magic talk about Steve and what I took away from it is... somebody is playing basketball again the way it should be played and about time.

I think the better comparison for Steve Nash is John Stockton.

totally agree. And I agree about Stockton and I believe these last three years that Steve has played has been better than anything stockton did in his prime.

that being said, Stockton was an incredible player as well and tough as rusty nails.

The Valley so low.
I think Steve has more Fun in his game, etc., than Magic--not by a lot, but a little. Magic didn't have room for it because he had a lot more Love in his game. Steve gets some delight out of his maneuvers, but when he gets one puzzle solved he's back working on the next one--he's an engineer. Magic would hug people and smile so big--he had delight in his (and others') plays, but I think it blended in to the overall love.

Stockton was darned good, too, but too much of his success was a simple machine--maneuver, then pass to Malone. Perhaps the Suns would win more if Steve did that more with Amare, but the 'new' rules demand more complexity.

I don't think putting words into my mouth is quite what I was getting at, but more power to you.

What I interpreted Magic saying was that he was good at some things, Stockton was good at some others--Nash is more of the healthy middle--being great at everything (although to be fair, Magic was more than great in the things he was good at).

uh Chap, really wasn't trying to put words into your mouth. Just asking a question. Think you might be a little wound up about the upcoming series? :)

It is really hard to compare players from different eras, different rules, and different teams. As good as the Suns are, I'm not sure Nash has the supporting cast Magic did and the defense rules were quite different.

Was Magic the greatest PG of all time? Certainly he was the best of his era and the NBA of the 1980's was much more competative than during the previous decades. Still, I'm not totally sure he was better than Oscar Robertson. The Big O was a PG who averaged 25.7 ppg and over 30 for six seasons, yet made 9887 assists in an era when assists were not awarded as liberally as in later eras. Oh, he also averaged 7.5 rpg. In his second season, he AVERAGED a triple double. http://www.nba.com/history/robertson_bio.html

At some point these comparisons lose meaning because the eras are just too different.
