Here's a question...what would be a suitable replacement for Veronica Mars? We just finished that, and after having rated over 700 titles on the NetFlix website, none of their suggestions pan out.

How about Eureka, Mentalist, Psyche, Leverage, Burn Notice, Alias, Human Target, Buffy The Vampire Slayer or Stargate (original series)? Have you seen any of them and if so how do you rate them?

I would rate them as average at best. And not worth sitting through commericials for, to be sure.

So what is it about Veronica Mars that you liked? The clever dialogue, the teenager solving crimes, what? It'll be easier to suggest something if you give an idea on what you like.

When I think about it, the clever dialogue mostly. I could tell that the writers grew up in the 80's like I did. I also thought the format was good; one serious crime to solve for the season, with a not-so-serious mystery each episode.

I hear Skooby Doo has teenagers and clever dialogue.

I'd go with Firefly, Chuck, Lost of course for the more serious stuff, X-Files (which pretty much invented the concepts of mythology and monster-of-the-week eps), Psych, Medium, Bones and Castle.

Castle has been more of a mystery-a-week show and lately Bones has been the same, but earlier in the series, they had more far-reaching mythologies, especially in the 2nd and 3rd seasons.

There's no mystery involved but for clever dialogue, I'd go Gilmore Girls. The first couple seasons of that show are a lot of fun and it watches well with the wife. My second suggestion would be Dexter or any of the shows I mentioned earlier. For a short replacement though I'd STRONGLY recommend the BBC series Sherlock. It's just 3 90 minute episodes but it's smart and fun.

Castle it is then, and maybe Psych...we already own Firefly (and Serenity) & X-Files, watched all of Lost already, we continue to watch Bones, Medium got stale, and my wife didn't like Chuck.

Already own Gilmore Girls, and I can't get my wife to give Dexter a second chance (it's just a bit to strange for her).

I will want to check out Sherlock though.

Thanks!

Wow, Whole Nine Yards, Big Trouble AND Gilmore Girls? Where is YOUR man card? ;)

Gilmore Girls may have had clever dialogue, but the way it was delivered was so unrealistic it bordered on unwatchable/listenable.

It fell out of my fanny pack and I have no idea where it ended up. If I'm ever challenged I just growl "how 'bout them Bears" and it's all good from there.

I can't help it, I loved the first few years of Gilmore Girls. I know it's a chick show but unlike you, I didn't find the dialogue unrealistic any more than I did watching Bringing Up Baby or The Philadelphia Story. It was just as good as the best of the Screwball Comedies IMO.

It's not the dialogue itself that's bad, it's the way it's delivered. COMPLETELY different than the screwball comedies.

...I didn't find the dialogue unrealistic...

I didn't at first, but it kind of wore on me. I feel as though I may have affected it's ratings in a minor way while it was still on air.

I mentioned to my co-workers who watched the show "no one talks like that in real life." They would tell me after they watched the next episode "you're right!"

I stuck with Gilmore Girls for two reasons:

1. My wife liked it, so it earned me marriage points watching it with her.
2. Lauren Graham (hubba hubba).

I didn't make it to the end of the series but I definitely enjoyed the first two seasons. By season 4 it was feeling too much like a soap opera for my tastes and that's about where we stopped viewing. And as far as nobody talking that way, well, I do. But that might prove your point because I'm a major nobody.

Don't get down on yourself Steve...we think you're somebody!

I always wanted to be somebody but my wife says I'm setting my goals too high. So now I'm shooting for crewman number 6. That guy in the episode who dies to prove how serious the situation is.

Two Words:

Human Centipede
LMAO , I just saw that on there. I recently watched

Right at Your Door

It was a pretty entertaining movie. It is about dirty bombs going off in L.A.. No big special effects but they pulled it off as being a realistic scenario.

Haven't watched it yet just saw that it was on there. From what I hear it is actually kind of boring. I'll probably have a few beers this weekend and check it out.I will let you know the results.

Same reason I got hooked on Dawson's Creek. Things you will do for the opposite sex.

So, to resolve the thread: What did you decide to veg out with this weekend?

I ended up watching the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, really liked it. Also watched The Dark Crystal, because I had to attack some childhood fears from this movie.

Also watched Food Inc. and Food Matters, life changing documentaries.

And Art & Copy is a great documentary on the Creative side of Advertising.

Going to watch some more of these suggestions this weekend. Thanks all!
