Texan Receives Billionth Netflix Flick

Online video renter Netflix delivered its 1 billionth DVD, a copy of Babel, to a customer in Helotes, Texas over the weekend. The customer, who was not identified, will receive a free lifetime subscription, the company said. Netflix debuted 7 1/2 years ago. Reporting on the company's milestone, the Associated Press commented that it "provides further validation for a concept that was once was mocked as just another wacky idea to emerge from the Internet boom of the late 1990s. ... Netflix is fast becoming as much of a household fixture as the living room couch."

living room couch? Let's be real. I was skeptical at first when it came out, but let's not pretend that it is in every American home.

So I closed my BBO account and opened a Netflix. My reasons are as follows;

1) BBO was often shipping from the middle of my queue, bypassing movies that I wanted to watch now. The movies listed above the shipped movie always showed as "Available".

2) BBO (or my b&m BB) doesnt carry some things I was looking for such as Family Guy Volumes 1 and 2.

3) Some items in my BBO queue have shown a Long Wait for 6+ months (90210 Season 1), eventhough it is readily available on Amazon.

4) Netflix is now $1 cheaper. ;)

I wont have the ability to trade my returned discs for movies or get my free monthly coupon, but I think overall, I should get an equal number of movies depending on how quickly Netflix ships.

Me personally, I'd keep a movie for a couple of weeks or more, and never watch them. I probably still have 40-50 movies that I have bought and still haven't watched due to lack of time.

When I tried Gamefly for video games, I kept the account for 3 months, and only played the game a half a dozen times. I'd much rather have something tangible like a DVD, than a service that allows me access to a dvd in 1-2 business days.

Netflix in Phoenix rocks - often two day turn around - mail on Monday, new DVD on Wednesday.

And never have we been unable to get the dvd we want.

I heard Netflix wanted to open up a new hub here too. Currently I believe that they use S. California for Phoenix.

I like Netflix for being able to get new releases fairly soon after release, and being able to get obscure movies. The best part about Netflix is not having to set for in a video store and sift through all the crap straight to video movies the places like Blockbuster push. :

I just meant that I've never used it. I probably never will. I rented x-men 3 last night and that was the first movie I've rented in probably 5 years or so. I just don't rent movies. Hell, I pretty much don't WATCH movies. The 7 or so I've seen this year in the theaters is probably more than I've seen in the last 3 combined.

It's not even really a deliberate choice; it's just what is. I prefer to spend my money in other ways, I guess.

This is extremely annoying. I've had a movie at the top of my queue for a few months now.

This still makes it worth it to me. And I actually enjoy browsing thru all the movie cases. I've gotten to know the staff at the local bb pretty well too, so they'd miss me if I switched.

I'm sure. You must be a cash cow to BB. Do you have stock options in the company?

Ha, hardly. Last time I checked I think I was averaging about $.83/movie. They're probably losing money on me when you include the postage they're paying.

Netflix's stock, Web site both go down

SAN FRANCISCO - Netflix Inc. frustrated investors and customers alike Tuesday as its stock price plunged to its lowest point in more than two years while its Web site was inaccessible most of the day because of unexplained technical problems.

The 7 percent drop in Netflix's shares wasn't a shock after the Los Gatos-based company reported the first quarterly customer losses in its history and dimmed its earnings outlook for the rest of the year.

But the Web site outage was a surprising — and embarrassing — setback.

Does Netflix still have the policy to give higher priority to customers that order less frequently than to those that watch and return movie fast?

This is why I left...plus the instore stuff.

Well, they were sued because of this practice and lost. I don't know if they still do it or not.

That is surprising that they would lose. Its in the terms of use. How can the courts decide what there business policy is. Unless they were discriminating against someone. But if they are doing it to everyone I don't really see how they are wrong.

Here is my views on NetFlix vs BB

Nothing upsets me more than getting 1/3 of the way into the movie and having it screw up because the disk is scratched to hell. I can go to blockbuster and exchange it.

With netflix I have to send it in and wait a few days until I can rewatch the movie.

I've had Netflix and Blockbuster, but have since cancelled both (never had problems with bad discs from either service). When I had more free time I was a huge abuser of Netflix. During summer/school months I'd get the DVDs at 3 p.m., rip them to my hard drive, and then drive over to the post office so they could go with the outgoing mail. That didn't work so well as Netflix likes to delay your movie being shipped by at least a day if you're a heavy user. I had BB and they never ship from the top of the queue.

If I ever get one of them again it would be Netflix. Now that I have a real job I don't need to copy the discs. I wouldn't get that many so I wouldn't be throttled. When I was with Netflix they didn't ship from the middle of the queue.

What I find funny is that the guy talks about how not customer friendly Blockbuster is, yet spends most of his blog talking about how stupid the customer is, how bad taste they have, and gets fired for calling a customer lady a malicious name. Pretty funny blog though becuase I usually think a lot of the same things.

I also have been a customer at that 19th and union hills store since it opened more then 10 years ago and have never had any of the problems he was talking about.

The only problem I have with BBO is they dont send out the movie that is on the top of my list. They do though keep in tact series of DVD's such as tv DVD series, and they havent skipped one of those for another movie down the list.

If I get Disc number 1 I will get Disk number 2 then #3 next and so on right after the other. TV series is actually all I have been renting for like the last year anyways. I use the coupons and mailers for movies at the store.

But I dont mind not getting the exact movie number 1 on my list, becuase I want to see all of the movies on my list so I dont care what I get first. If I really want to see it right away I will just my free movie or mailer to get it at the store.

Okay... I use neither but... freaking net flix has so many advertisments pretty much everywhere I look including tons and tons of blocked Netflix pop-ups that I would never do business with them, they are flat out obnoxious...

Everytime I go to the daily news I get blocked Netflix crap... and it also is making me angry at them, by the way... http://www.dailynews.com
