That video wasn't a great example but I have listened to a few of his podcast as well and working out is working out isn't really the point he was making, it was more along the lines of different things work for different individuals at different rates so working out is working out in that sense. If you listen to his podcast he actually states that he is constantly learning and reading and adding to his philosophies and concepts and in many regards sounds similar to what the Suns trainers do in that he works to build routines and techniques specifically to individuals and what their bodies responds to. He talks about the wide range in the age of veterans and rookies in the NFL and how varied their workouts need to be as someone who is 35 isn't going to have the same progress or workloads as someone who is 22. I was really impressed with his concepts and ideas and the way hey tailors things specifically for each individual unlike traditionalist who feel that the same workouts and routines apply to everyone.

Hear, hear.

I'm glad you can put that in better terms than I could.

Seriously.

The bottomline is, the wrong workout regimen can actually place you in bigger danger than not working out at all, especially in a sports environment. You can even tailor it individually, in that a regimen designed to maximize one player can actually be detrimental to another player.

That's why I mentioned the Suns trainers. I don't know how the Trailblazers trainers work, but I know more than a worrying number of their premiere players have a strong history of bad knee and back problems, and the Suns trainers have rejuvenated more than one veteran player's career. It's no coincidence that the Suns trainers are also masters at tailoring regimens to individuals and are very progressive in their methods.

Well if it helps with technique for speed rushers, WR's, etc...so we get off the snap quicker then I'm all for it.

Did you quote the wrong person?

Because you're not stating anything that is contradictory to anything I said. We're in total agreement here.

My sentiment is in response to Cbus cardsfan's "working out is working out" statement.

I agree with this. Working out is working out. There are just differing opinions/methods to achieve, in the end, the same results.

I like the hire in the fact that a different voice brings different ideas and that makes the workouts fresh. I'm sure Lott's voice and schtick was pretty bland to the players by now and players probably get in a rut. This should bring new enthusiasm but I don't think we'll see a noticeable difference on the field. It's not like the Cards had a bunch of out of shape players.

I disagree. The workout coach and the team doctor positions are vital and completely misunderstood IMO.

The Buddy System has been around for quite some time.

I figured as much. I just haven't researched as deep into it besides some forays into Muscle & Fitness' site and some Google-ing into techniques and "what's best?" queries.

My main point is that you will not see any significant difference in the Cards play/performance on the field because of Budd. Lott knows what he is doing, as does every other strength and conditioning coach in the NFL.

It's not like Fitz is going to go out and start running a 4.4 forty because of the new wisdoms of Buddy. Like I said, it will just be different methods to achieve the same goals, a healthy, strong, fast football team.

I don't know for sure, but I'd guess strength and conditioning coaches are among the lowest paid on the staff and all their salaries pretty similar. There's reason for that.

I liked John Lott as our trainer, but in my estimation, he spent too much emphasis on muscle strength, and too little on muscle length. I hope that Morris is geared toward length training as well as strength training. I believe they can cut down greatly on muscle pulls and tears if he balances out the work. I do believe we will miss Lott's infectious insistence on 'getting your mind right'. He had a huge success with getting guys into the workouts.

Cards Hire Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

http://blog.azcardinals.com/2014/03/06/olympian-roger-kingdom-new-speed-coach/

Olympian Roger Kingdom new speed coach
Posted by Darren Urban on March 6, 2014 – 11:29 am

The Cardinals hired Buddy Morris as their new strength and conditioning coach Tuesday. Today, one of the men Morris used to train became his new coaching associate — and it is an interesting hire to say the least. Olympian hurdler Roger Kingdom, who won gold medals in the hurdles in both the 1984 Los Angeles and the 1988 Seoul Games, will be the Cardinals’ new speed coach. With assistant strength and conditioning coach Pete Alosi remaining in place, the Cards have grown their coaching staff yet again in a quest to have the Cards be a one-stop shop for however the players need to prepare.

Kingdom originally attended the University of Pittsburgh on a football scholarship, so he knows the sport. That’s how he knew Morris, who was the school’s strength coach from 1980-89 in his first of three stints there. Kingdom won the gold in the 110-meter hurdles. He retired from the sport in 1999 (he briefly tried a comeback a few years later) and spent time as the track coach at California University of Pennsylvania. During his track career, Kingdom was a five-time United States outdoor champion (1985, 1988-90 and 1995) and two-time gold medalist at the Pan American Games (1983, 1995). He also holds a World Cup gold medal (1989) and won gold at the World University Games in 1989.

Now he will try to bring his speed training to the Cardinals. That’s something Bruce Arians has harped on since he arrived. Meanwhile, Morris in past interviews has talked about how he doesn’t believe Olympic-style lifting helps guys play football. This will be a very interesting transition to a new strength and conditioning program, and will make for an intriguing offseason.

It's about functional strength and endurance as it proven over and again as the military special operations teams train...my son has harped on me since he got involved with the teams 15 years ago and has helped me change my training regimen to keep me healthy and much better conditioned than many (I dare say most) people my age, with as much strength as I had playing sports in college in the early 70's

I'm winded just reading it. I did move to the fridge and back a couple times today. I'll be fine though, got my feet elevated now.
