Josh Johnson returned to the Washington Commanders last week, signing a one-year deal with the franchise for whom he started three games in 2018. No player in NFL history has played for more teams than the soon-to-be-39-year-old quarterback. Johnson has played for 14 franchises and had multiple stints with four teams, including the Commanders.

Needless to say, Johnson has seen a lot. Things are much different in Washington now than when he last wore the burgundy and gold in 2018. Dan Snyder was Washington's owner, Bruce Allen was the general manager, and Jay Gruden was the head coach. It was Johnson's connection to Gruden that led the then-Redskins to sign Johnson. The 2018 season was a forgettable one, as it is best remembered as the year when quarterback Alex Smith suffered a devastating leg injury. After Smith and backup Colt McCoy were lost for the season, Washington signed Johnson, and he started the season's final three games.

After he signed his contract, Johnson met with the media via Zoom.

What has changed since the last time he was in Washington? Well, of course, the name has been changed twice, there is a new owner, GM, coaching staff, training staff, and more.

Josh Johnson said last time he was here " a lot of things were going on... so the energy was different. Just walking in today you could tell the vibes were high." Said his first impressions of the new regime has been "A+ + + "

Johnshon has had an amazing career. The 2025 season will be his 18th NFL season. In 17 years, Johnson has started only nine games, with his only win coming as Washington's quarterback.

Johnson explained his decision to sign with the Commanders.

“I saw the opportunity to win here,” Johnson said, per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. “I saw an opportunity to continue to get better and be a part a system that is exciting and looks a lot of fun on tape.”

Johnson faces a challenge in making Washington's roster. Jayden Daniels is the starter and Marcus Mariota is the backup. That is as good of a 1-2 situation as there is in the NFL. However, if the Commanders keep three quarterbacks — they did last season — Johnson will battle Sam Hartman for the job.
