New PFT Mock - A good mock - Cards draft Alex Smith

PFT Mock Draft Version 2.0

This is actually how I think the top 10 picks will play out, with the only exception being that I see the Bucs taking Cadillac and the Vikings taking Benson instead of the opposite:

1) SF - Aaron Rogers
2) MIA - Ronnie Brown
3) CLE - Braylon Edwards
4) CHI - Mike Williams
5) TB - Cedric Benson
6) TEN - Pac Man Jones
7) MIN - Cadillac Williams
8) AZ - Alex Smith
9) WAS - Antrelle Rolle
10) DET- Derrick Johnson

I just dont see Minnesotta taking a back, their backfield is allready over crowded and unless they trade away two of their backs its not going to happen... they will take a receiver unless both Williams and Edwards are gone and then it will be a defensive player...

1. CLE passes on Smith. I wouldn't have had any trouble beleiving it before his workout, but now I don't think there's any chance he slips past them. I think the only reason they stuck with Holcomb is because they felt like it was really one of their only options. That is a team searcing for a leader.

But, I wouldn't be st akll surprised if they take Smith, start Holcomb, and suddenly Holcomb looks great, and now suddenly a team that looked desparite for a QB seems to be QB-rich, ala Drew Brees/Philip Rivers in SD.

2. MIN takes a RB. Sure, that's probably the BPA at that pick, but really? They add to an already crowded and talented backfield (Bennett, Smith, Moore)? I don't see it.

I sorta agree with you about CLE, but Holcomb doesn't play for them anymore. He signed with Buffalo. Trent Dilfer is their new starting QB. Other than the names, I think your argument makes sense.

Oh. I didn't know that (well,I knew Dilfer signed there, but I thought Holcomb stayed, too).

Anyway, that just goes to show you that they need a QB long-term even more.

You can make a good arguement for the Vikes taking a RB @ #7. Bennett and Moore both have injury concerns, and Bennett could be gone in a trade (and I don't mean with us for Boldin). O. Smith is one strike away from a 1 - year suspension. If the top three RB's in the draft are as good as everyone here thinks, they might be tempted.

I would think under this scenerio, Bennett would be available for a 4th rounder.

edited to add I also thought there was no way that so many teams would have passed on Ben Roethlisberger last year.

What goes unstated here is "we won't take him because he won't be there."

If Smith is there at #8, I think there's probably a better than 50/50 chance that we take him.

If he was there and we didn't take him I think that would be a huge mistake to pass on him. We need a CB and RB desperately, but this is the type of kid who comes around once in a blue moon.

I agree it would be a mistake, but not an unprecidented one (Leftwich, Roethlisberger).

I don't think this kid is a "once in a blue moon" player, though. A kid like this comes around annually. Unfortunately, we annually pass on kids like this. It's high-time we take one if we have the chance.

There have actually been a lot of rumblings lately that Minnesota could take a RB. Yes, they have a crowded backfield as is, but its said that Tice wants more of a between the tackles type power back. That's why Benson comes to mind.

For my money, I think the Vikings move up with the Browns and take one of the WRs. If they stand pat at #7, it will be a close call for them between Derrick Johnson and Benson.

The top talent in this draft is at the offensive skill positions. Kiper said a couple of weeks back that the top three backs could all go in the top 10 this year, despite the fact that they all grade out comparably to Kevin Jones and Stephen Jackson who went at the end of the first round last year. That's because those players represent the best value at those spots. There simply aren't better players to push them down.

Right now: Alex Smith, Aaron Rogers, Cadillac Williams, Ronnie Brown, Cedric Benson, Mike Williams and Braylon Edwards look like the top guys. On the defensive side of the ball only Derrick Johnson and the top 3 CBs are in the mix.

It looks a lot like the Niners will take Aaron Rogers and the Dolphins Ronnie Brown. If that happens, all that has to happen is that the Browns pass on Alex Smith and he falls to #8. What other team would pick a QB? What team with a need at QB as the ammo to move up and snag one?

Smith's workout was great, but he is not considered a slam-dunk prospect. Comparing this year's QB class to last year's, most scouts would put Manning and Roethlisberger way ahead of Smith. Between Rivers, Smith and Rogers its generally a matter of taste at that point, but my guess is that those three would grade out in the order I listed.

I'm hoping it's just once in a blue moon that we pick this high again.. I think if we can get Alex Smith we should probably take him. We might not get another chance to draft a qb like him... There are always corners and rb's to be had in the last first and second that pan out. I know it can happen to qb's too but I think it's more rare and they usually only get a chance due to injury, a situation I hope we never get in to.

Tennessee re-signed Billy Volek last offseason to a multi year deal. The Titans are high on Volek and he looked great replacing McNair last year. (When he got good protection that is.)

The Packers would love a chance to draft Alex Smith. But picking #24, they simply don't have the ammo to move up to take him. A much more likely scenario is that the Packers look toward Jason Campbell at #24 or Charlie Frye, Andrew Walter or Adrian McPherson in round 2.

No. Eli Manning, Byron Leftwich, and Ben Roethlisberger are players who come around "once in a blue moon." Each of them have combinations of leadership, size, mobility, and skills that don't come along often and really lack comparison.

Alex Smith seems a lot like a lot of other first-round also-rans like David Carr (who I think is going to be a solid starting QB but nothing more), Joey Harrington, etc. Alex Smith would have been drafted in the first round of last year's draft, but not in the Top 15. He's a very pedestrian player for a first-round QB.

Maybe, but only one will be available for unrestricted free agency. Moore will be an exclusive-rights free agent. O. Smith will be a restricted free agent. Only Bennett will be allowed to walk away, but they probably won't want to retain him, anyway. They also have Moe Williams, who is no slouch himself in the backfield.
