It seems we still keep talking about the same couple of QBs, but I wonder if Denny Green might not be going with an obvious choice for our next QB.

Matt Hasselbeck, Kurt Warner, Brees and Bledsoe won't be coming here. Those guys are out. So we're left with a list of QBs with warts: Brad Johnson, Jeff Garcia and Gus Ferotte.

Here are a couple of other guys I think we should be thinking about:
1) Jon Kitna: Was in the running for MVP in 2003 before giving way to Carson Plamer. An SI Article (referencing the Dayton Daily News) recently said "Will the Bengals consider trading quarterback Jon Kitna during or before the April 23-24 draft? Yes. Of course. Absolutely. Here's why: Although Kitna offers stability with his veteran leadership, the Bengals would love the chance to add a pick in the draft's top three rounds. They could do it by swapping Kitna or trading down from the 17th spot." I like Kitna, if he could be had for a 3rd round pick, it would be a good deal.
2) David Gerrard: I believe he'll be a free agent next year, but the Jags would listen to offers for him now to assure they get something in return. Gerrard is kind of sneaky in the Jake Delhomme sense in that people in the know seem to really like this guy, but the average Joe has never heard of him. I think he could be had for a decent price. A mobile QB with a strong arm.
3) Kelly Holcombe: A very solid QB when he's healthy, but he's never healthy. But he is an unrestricted free agent and at this point, I'd take him over Brad Johnson and Garcia.

So what do you think? I'd love to see Kitna in a Cards jersey.

In 2003 Kitna threw for 3591 yards and 26 TDs versus 15 INTs. It should also be noted that down the stretch, Kitna really came on.

He's 32, so he's no spring chicken, but has less tread on the tires than a 37 year old Brad Johnson.

Did a little research of Gerrard. Last year, the Jaguars wanted to trade him as Leftwich is the future of the team. However, Gerrard had been battling Crohn's disease and it was considered career threatening. Because of it, the Jags found no takers.

But Garrard is fully recovered from the disease and is now a restricted free agent. The Jags are likely to tender him at 1st round compensation but are expected to accept a 2nd round pick in return for him as he will be an unrestricted free agent next year.

Garrard is a favorite of NFL folks "in the know". Jon Gruden has reportedly inquired about trading for him in the past. He's only 26, so he has a long shelf life. The downside is that he is unproven having only played in four NFL games.

Also, because of Garrard's size, (6'2", 244) and scrambling ability he is often refered to as "a poor man's Dante Culpepper".

Serious neck injury and if Norv Turner doesn't want him in his vertical offense I don't see him being a fit here.

How about Tim Couch. He may be a late bloomer and if he gets with the right team could prosper, refer to Brian Griese.

Green cut him in Minnesota when he was healthy, won't sign him now when he's injured.

I like Garrard but I don't really believe Jax is looking to trade him I think they like him too as a backup.

The Gannon Green cut was not the same as he is now. He's much more polished. His neck is a concern, but we may be able to get him cheap for a year or two. Hell, he's way better than McCown.

Gerrard is a restricted free agent this year and an unrestricted free agent next year. In a perfect world, they'd love to have him around to always be the backup. However, they can't afford him. They're already paying top dollar to Leftwich. They're going to have to part with Garrard next year at the latest, so it makes sense to get something in return for him while they can.

That's true but it seems to me the trend in the NFL right now is to hang on to talented young QB's as long as you can just in case you need them. THat's precisely why I think we'll retain Josh even though we probably don't think he's a lock to start, with injuries you never know when theyr'e going to need Garrard, that's the one thing with Lefty he has had some injuries.

1) Jon Kitna: NO!!! My friend is a diehard Bungles fan and I've had the misfortune of watching many of their games over the years. He has one of the weakest arms I've ever seen and his decision making ability is horrendous. He throws the stupidest interceptions I've ever seen. Chad Johnson made him look way better than he is by coming back to his underthrown pass and making the spectacular catch.
2) David Gerrard: I'd love to see him as a Card but with Leftwhich having injury problems, I can't forsee the Jags letting anyone get him.
3) Kelly Holcombe: I would give him a shot. He played on one of the worst offenses in the league and didn't do that badly. He never had a good running game and his OL is horrible. He could be someone that would work out really well.

Admittedly, although Kitna's numbers were great in 03, enough so to warrant some MVP talk, they were a horror show up to then:
Sea 00: 2658 yards, 18 TD, 19 INT
Cin 01: 3216 yards, 12 TD, 22 INT
Cin 02: 2178 yards, 16 TD, 16 INT

Browns | Team to Re-Sign Holcomb? - from www.KFFL.com
Fri, 11 Feb 2005 21:03:33 -0800

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the Cleveland Browns will make a concerted effort in the next few weeks to re-sign QB Kelly Holcomb. The team is unlikely to bring Jeff Garcia back, and feels that Luke McCown and Josh Harris are not yet ready to take over the starter's position. With the third overall selection in the draft, the Browns could still draft a quarterback, but they would like to have a veteran on hand, and Holcomb would have a good chance of starting with Cleveland.

I'd be intrested in bringing in Couch to compete with others. He won't take much to sign as no team would pay a lot just to look. With the surgery, I'd consider giving him a fair shot. It's not like Denny's offensive system isn't supposed to make mild QB's (or older ones) look great.
