New Search Policy To Take Effect Beginning With Friday's Cardinals-Broncos Game
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, August 29, 2005

Tempe, AZ - In order to further enhance fan safety and comfort, everyone entering Sun Devil Stadium for Arizona Cardinals home games will be subject to hand searches beginning with this Friday’s preseason finale vs. the Denver Broncos.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early at stadium gates to help facilitate this additional security measure. All fans entering Sun Devil Stadium should expect to be patted down by security personnel before going through stadium gates.

“Pat downs” of fans entering NFL stadiums have taken place on a frequent basis in recent years. Following discussion at a recent league meeting, Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and the NFL clubs determined that these hand searches should be a required element of stadium security procedures at all NFL games.

“This new requirement is not a result of any specific threat information,” said Commissioner Tagliabue. “It is in recognition of the significant additional security that ‘pat-downs’ offer, as well as the favorable experience that our clubs and fans have had using ‘pat-downs’ as part of a comprehensive stadium security plan.”

Several NFL teams successfully used pat-downs as part of stadium security procedures last season. Hand searches of all fans entering stadiums also were employed during all NFL playoff games last season.

Now If the Cardinal Cheerleaders performed the pat downs I'd call that enhancing fan comfort!

Crap, I had smuggling ice cold brews into the stadium down to a science. I didn't need to stoop to such lows but they don't allow you to leave the stadium during halftime anymore (that was like 5 season ago, but I can't let it go :D )

They are a little ridiculous about things though.

Last year I wasn't allowed to bring in a sealed gallon of water (which I'd brought in to many previous games).

Like I'm going to use it as a weapon. C'mon - it's Arizona. It'll be empty by halftime. :doi:

They;ve been patting people down at sporting events here in denver for a while now. At rockies games I think it's random, but at Bronco games it's everybody, I think.

No doubt.

It was some old guy, named Sam I think. I just glared at him, thanked him for his service to public safety and threw it into a garbage can...from about 20 feet away. :D

I should have just poured it out on the ground right there.

They should have been doing this ever since 911. In my view, there is no more obvious target than a major sporting event for terrorists. All they have to do is strap explosives on their body. The patdown search may not even catch it. But at least it gives us a chance to stop it, if something so godawful were to be attempted.
No self-respecting terrorist is going to waste his hard-earned explosives at a Cardinal game in SDS.

What would happen? A ton of empty bleachers would be destroyed? What fun would that be?

Aren't sealed bottles of water allowed??? I know I have taken them in on several occasions!

Yeah, there's no way you could ever drink a gallon! :sarcasm:

Allegedly - only sealed water bottles up to a certain number of ounces are allowed through the gates.

Ridiculous.

They never said anything before last season about the size of water we brought in.

They used to provide free bottled water via a partnership with Hinckley/Schmidt or some company like that. Used to pour it into big coolers and fans could fill up their own bottles or the paper cups provided by the company.

Me too. I always have two beers in my back pockets when we leave the tailgate. One for the walk to the Stadium and one for the walk from the Stadium entrance to the 1st beer stand.

I am going to have to study this pat down policy carefully, in order to look for breachment possibilities.

A few years back, when I was going to ASU games, a friend of mine always managed to sneak small flasks of liquor in in his engineer boots he was wearing.

Mexico would be a more likely target...

I guess it will be hard to bring the flask in going forward. At least I didn't try to hide it under my hat!!

What kind of safety measure was that. "Remove your hat please, because that's where you would try to hide that weapon"??
