Seems every 2-3 weeks Circuit City has a 10% off sale on the 2 tv's I'm looking at, the 34 inch widescreen sony, and the 34 inch widescreen Panasonic, so I'm not missing out on a great deal by waiting for my tax return.

The Circuit City in my area doesn't sell the SONY model I believe you are referring to Russ. Also, you may want to check the fine print at the bottom, because if it is the SONY XBR model then Circuit City always says the XBR's are not eligible for the 10% off when they run their so-called 10% off on all digital TV sale.

Yeah I'm looking at the KVHS3410, not the XBR. I agree the XBR picture is better, but it's roughly 500 bucks more and as you say is never discounted so it's really 600 more since the other one is discounted so often.

If my stock had gone up any further I'd have just sold it and bought the XBR but it's actually gone down lower than it was when I started looking at TVs, so I'm buying right out of my tax return.

Damn stocks, seems like the only ones that go up in value are the ones you almost bought or the ones you sold the day before. :D

BTW, the Sony XS models are a couple hundred bucks cheaper than the XBR models and both models use Sony's Super Fine Pitch CRT technology. I believe the only difference between the 2 models is the XS has less bells/whistles, otherwise I believe the picture quality between the 2 is the same or comparable. So you may want to check out the Sony 34" KD-34XS955.

Well I finally ordered my tv today. I got my tax return over 2 weeks ago but we were out of town both weekends and everytime I logged on to Circuit City to order, it wasn't on sale (and would go on sale that weekend while I was gone). So today I logged on, and it was on sale and I ordered it.

I ended up ordering the Panasonic CT34WX54 instead of the comparable Sony. In the end while I think the Sony has a better picture(seen side by side at Circuit City), I got the Panasonic for ~ $400 less. I spent considerable time debating if the difference in picture was worth the money. My final decision was made when a guy standing next to me at Circuit City told me he'd done the same thing 6 months ago, agonized, bought the Panasonic, and "I haven't given it a second thought since it's a great TV." I'm calling later today to arrange home delivery, would like to have it all set up by Wednesday night so I can watch the 2 hour season finale of Lost on it.

Thanks for all the feedback, even though I didn't buy any of the tv's people recommended, I did consider them and it absolutely helped me a lot in my decision process.

Ditto to what he said...

I go out to the movies less frequently now, especially since the addition of my surround sound unit...

Blame sony for that. Sony does not allow retailers to touch the price of their XBR line of tv's unless they get permission from sony first. Same goes for Bose, Velodine and certain Polk models of home audio equipment.

Yep Circuit City was really clear about the XBR never going on sale. I did find an Anderson's advertising an XBR at a discount, when I called it was a floor model, and a discontinued floor model, no box, same warranty but I was too afraid of buying it I figure since it's a discontinued model it's at least a couple of years old already.

Now I have to wait until Saturday for delivery so I won't see Lost on it but I'l have it for Memorial Weekend which will be nice.

You'll be very happy with this TV. The picture is only slightly inferior to the Sony and it is much more feature rich than the sony counterpart. If i were picking between the two, I would buy the Panasonic without thinking about it. (I work at CC by the way, so I deal with these TV's all the time)
