It will also make every record in the book pretty much useless and records will be broken left and right making them not all that special anymore.

This is just a really, really, bad idea.

So records from the 16 game era aren't very special either?

Only from the 14 game era?

Would love to see the NFL play a game in Vegas. I dont think it will happen b/c of the ignorance of professional sports franchises re: gambling. This market could easily support an NFL, NBA, or MLB team, but the fear of corruption is too strong. It is really too bad

They changed from 14 to 16 almost 30 years ago.

Also they needed to have more games because the NFL had plans on expanding, playoffs were restructured, Brand new collective bargaining agreement was negotiatied and ratified, and a brand new TV contract was negotiated. Back then 30 years ago it was a necessary evil for a sport growing into the real national past time.

It was also far easier because there was fewer injury issues and far less complicated money issues including revenue sharing.

No we were about the only team dumb enough to go for it in the first place

Oh yeah it was HORRIBLE.

We had a comeback win, on national TV. We were the first game played on foriegn soil, and it was a HUGE hit.

I can see why it was a dumb move.

Not going to happen until the next CBA has to be done. Just not logistically possible to do it during the middle of a CBA agreement. Revenue sharing structure will have to change, each and every player currently under contract will have to get a % raise in their contracts as there contracts now were only negotiated based on a 16 game schedule, plus they will get another increase because the TV revenue will be higher. New cap figures will have to be recalculated. Veteran min will have to be recalculated. Practice Squad size, active player list size, and maybe even more then 53 total players will all have to be looked at to help with the extra players breaking down and injuries that will occur. And thats just the tip of it.

All they have to do is divide the dollars by the number of games now played and add that number to current numbers, including the salary cap. 16 games divided by 1.6 mil comes out to 160,000. The new salary would be 1.76 mil. The same would hold true down the line.

The only thing that would change it, would be if they decided to allow more players, but I think they should only allow more on the practice squad.

Lessening players careers, and more money for more travel and security, didnt even think about that. Which like you said will mean the players asking for even more of the pie then they are now which means less % of the revenue sharing in the owners pocket then every before. That CBA negotiating period will be a horrid one and would get very, very nasty, and there will be a work stopage.

It will also make every record in the book pretty much useless and records will be broken left and right making them not all that special anymore.

This is just a really, really, bad idea.

It's inevitable that more games will be added as the NFL expands. They'll just put a caveat next to records as they do with the Dolphins perfect season. Who cares? It doesn't take away from what was accomplished at the time.

It isnt nearly that simple IMO.

1. You have to take into account the incentives that are in players contracts. They were negotiatied under the terms of a 16 game season. You think owners will be willing to pay out incentives that were based on 16 game season?

2. You have to take into account the bonuses that are based on a 16 game season.

3. There will be a lot more wear and tear on the players bodies making a bigger chance for injury.

4. Longer season will lessen or has a chance of lessening a players life span in the NFL. This and #3 means they need to get paid more now rather then later.

5. There is also the fact that the TV revenue will be going up making another huge jump in the total cap amounts.

6. The added strain of traveling to another country and added security needed.

7. If we go world wide, players will want even more of the revenue then they are getting right now and the teams will fight that.

There is more that I havent even listed but it is far, far more complicated then just saying we will give you ?% raise to everyone.

It is an absolutly horrid idea and needs to wait until the nex CBA needs to be negotiated. And even then it will be a big time dog fight since players will ask for more of the pie and the revenue sharing will have to be reworked again.

Thats just it the NFL doesnt have plans to expand either now or in the future any time soon.

And it will take away from it. Remember when the 1000 yard season rushing actually ment something.

The same things were said when the schedule was increased from 14 to 16 games. Do you think the 2000 yard rushing season of Dickerson and Co. are diminished because they had 2 extra games...vs. OJ Simpson?

I don't.

Once again that was 30 years ago, different circumstances, and the sport wasnt nearly as popular as it is now. Apples and oranges. You just cant compare the 2.

And yes OJ's was far more of a feat.

Do New England, Denver, Indy and Pittsburgh players get hurt more often and have shorter careers than Arizona players?

Those teams play more than 16 games almost every year while the Cards have had only one group, the 1998 team, play more than 16 in their entire history yet the Cards players seem to get hurt more and have shorter careers.

I'd be curious to see the numbers on the perennial playoff teams vs teams like the Lions and Cards.

I fear the strike that will happen. The extra 2 games when they went from 14 to 16 was one of the main reason for the 1982 strike when the players realized they should be getting more money after playing 3 years of 2 extra games a season without getting what they felt was fair compensation and injuries were going up. That thing got ugly, and will again especially with more money then ever involved. Those who dont look at the past are doomed to repeat their failures.

Not sure what the answer is to that. But those players do get extra compensation for playing those extra games.

Yes, it was thirty years ago, but the exact same arguments were made then. Season records should be the very LAST reason not to expand. If it makes sense financially for all involved, they'll do it. If not, they won't. I am sure they have thought through all the issue that you are bringing up. They have been working on this for several years, so they are well aware of the obstacles.

Never said records was a main issue but it is an issue. And once again in 78 it was a neccesary evil and not nearly as popular as it is today. Not to even mention that it went along with a updated CBA that lead to a strike 3 years later. If it happened then it will happen today especially with far more money and far different contracts then 30 years ago. Heck a strike will probably happen again without this idea in 2009-2010 when they have to do a new CBA anyways.

Also they havent been working in this for several years. This is a brand new, new commish Goodel idea. As the article states it is in the very extreme preliminary stages. All I am saying is that anyone who expects this to be an easy transition or one that will be a smooth one without a long hard battle on a new CBA is fooling themselves.

Also making sense financially does not mean make sense for the game.

Its a very slippery slope and I hope the league and the teams are ready for what the players will ask for if they do decide on doing this.

I think it would be great to have an extra week of pro-football. I like the idea of moving the Super Bowl to the second Sunday of Febuary. If they do that, they might as well make it on a Saturday or make Superbowl weekend a holiday.

As far as the number are concern, how hard is it to add a an extra week pay to a player salary. I am sure it going to real hard to convince these players to get a free trip to Europe. It will kinda be like going to the pro-bowl. Nobody complains about going to Hawaii.
