The Cleveland Browns are spelling desperation in their search for a veteran quarterback, and it's hitting a new low.
As the team sorts out its market with the likes of Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins, a new candidate has entered the fold: former No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz.
According to Cleveland dot com's Mary Kay Cabot, there is mutual interest between Wentz and the Browns if they fail to land another veteran on the market. Wentz has not been a starting quarterback in the NFL since 2022 when he was traded from the Indianapolis Colts to the Washington Commanders. He was 2-5 as the starting quarterback of the Commanders that year.
Since then, he has been the backup quarterback for Matthew Stafford with the Los Angeles Rams and for Patrick Mahomes with the Kansas City Chiefs. He started in Week 18 for the Chiefs this season as the team rested their starters and it did not go well for the former first rounder.
It would be a full-circle moment for both Wentz and the Browns should he sign with the team after Cleveland traded the rights to draft him with the No. 2 overall pick to the Philadelphia Eagles back before the 2016 NFL draft.
This is a move that would not move the needle at all nor preclude the Browns from using the No. 2 overall pick on the likes of Miami's Cam Ward or Colorado's Shedeur Sanders. The Browns already traded for former first rounder Kenny Pickett and may add at least one more.
