Other than Robbie Ray evening the series, I have a personal reason for wanting to see him excel. If Robbie and Grienke could win both today (Sat.) and Monday. and we can't wrap it up in Phoenix on Tuesday, it will be Robbie in the final game in L.A. next Thu.
If Robbie can lead us to two wins in this series, he would clearly be the ace of the staff. And the D-backs would be less inclined to keep the eccentric and expensive Grienke, which would mean letting J.D. (who wants to be here) go.
My vote is for Ray to lead the staff next season (with hopefully a solid 2-3-4-5) and an expensive J.D. leading the hitters (with Goldy joining the 1-2 punch) instead of Greinke and Ray (40% of the games) with only Goldy as the difference maker on offense 162 games per season. Lamb has shown for the past two seasons that he can put up slugger's stats in the first half, then disappear for the second half, in addition to his sub-par performance vs. lefties all the time.
I know the odds are against what I am hoping for, but not as much as expecting the D-backs to sweep games 2-3-4.
