Ok, this movie was utterly fantastic, but I really disliked the ending. Bardem needs to get an oscar for his performance...captivating. So many scenes had my stomach in knots...just great tension.

Coens can flat out write movies, man.

The ending just didn't work for me though...it felt like something was left hanging out there...and I'm not a guy who wants bows and neat little packages in an ending. Heck, I loved the Sopranos ending but I felt I was set up for it. This one, not so much.

Save the last minute, this is one of the best movies I've seen in a long, long, long time.

Yup! This movie is just fantastic. No two ways about it. Bardem was incredible.

really? The last minute is what I think makes this movie beyond brilliant.

I thought the ending was ok, but I felt there was something lacking that I couldn't identify. It felt flat to me and it didn't feel like it fit.

Some people in the theatre were pissed off at the end, though, talking about the movie sucking.

I thought the ending was great too Cheese!

I didn't even think about this before, but being a cop, I could really understand how that movie impacted you so much Shane. You ever get the same feeling that Tommy Lee Jones did throughout?

Yeah, I was kind of shocked at some of the comments coming at the end. It was like they watched a different movie BUT until the ending the entire theater seemed into it...laughing, gasping, jumping, etc. Then the end just really put off most of the people in the theater. It was weird. Five minutes before they were all into it, then they were cussing and wanting money back, etc.

I guess that is exactly how the book ends, too...but in a book that seems to be a good ending for whatever reason...you expect a book to end like that but not usually a movie.

Dunno.

But there are going to be multiple Oscars coming out of this film.

I told my wife that this wasn't a "guy" movie so she would go with me. I told her critics had rated this one of the best movies of the year.

My wife totally thought it was a guy movie with all the killing. I've lost all credibility with her when it comes to picking out movies.

My expectations were very high after reading all of the reviews. I liked it but, frankly, it wasn't as great as I was hoping it would be.

Watched this last night, wow what a movie. The way they filmed each scene slowly and deliberately, showing us each little action, was awesome. It just sucked me right into the story.

The writing for all the small characters was dead on. The owner of the sporting goods store, when he was asked if he gets many customers that aren't dressed, the 3 guys at the border, "dude, give him your beer", the conversations with owner of the gas station and the guy with the truck of chickens. The interactions with all of these small characters was perfectly written.

The ending caught me a bit off guard, I love it when movies do that. Story was over, everything had been told, and it was time end. This was as close to a perfect film as I've seen in a long time.

Javier Bardem is one bad mother.

Yes.

Saw this last night... I freakin' love these guys films! I've not seen as good a film in a long time, just brilliant all the way around. I wish I could see it again for the first time.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. I like it better now than I did after seeing it yesterday, but I don't agree it was the Best Picture.

To each his own, I suppose.

One more thing:

Woody H's character refers to an "ATM." Since when were there ATM's in West Texas in 1980?

Check out the goofs section for the film on IMDB. There are several goofs for items, but nothing about an ATM. The modern network ATM was invented in Dallas in 1968, so likely they did have them in 1980.

Of the 2007 movies I've seen so far, not one I would give Best Picture. But I guess one of them had to win. I think I would have picked Atonement and Michael Clayton ahead of this one though.

The movie is set in 1980? IIRC, the book was unspecific as to the era.
One of the quarters was dated 1958. Bardem said it waited 12 years for the occasion. ATM's in 1968? Not is Arizona where I grew up. Interesting.

In the scene, Bardem said the quarter was from 1958 and it took 22 years to get there. The movie took place in 1980.

Like There Will Be Blood, I was a little disappointed in this movie. There were several plot holes and when one of the characters met his demise, I felt it was a cheat--we spend 3/4 of the movie following him and then he's dead. We don't see how (although it is implied) and then that's the end of it.

And it just didn't feel like a Coen bros. movie to me. It didn't have any of that strange quirkiness that they usually have--even their dramas have a certain feel to them. I think I have to see it again, but this is my 3rd favorite of the 5 Oscar movies.

1) Michael Clayton
2) Juno
3) No Country For Old Men
4) There Will Be Blood
5) Atonement

It's no accident the Oscars drew the lowest viewership of all time when the two most acclaimed movies had miserable and dark and unresolved endings.

Hated them both. I go to the movies to be entertained. Moved. Enthralled. Saddened. Laugh. Made thoughtful. Surprised.

I do not go to be made to feel miserable after going. Movies like No Country for old men, the Deer Hunter and Ordinary People are vile crap foisted on us. I skipped Ordinary people and a few others as well, based on what friends, whose opinions I trust, told me about them.

One man's opinion.

All the same reasons I loved it. It's crap because you can't wrap your mind around it? Well, I can't argue, because it's your opinion. Not to sound like I'm picking on you, Jim, so don't read that into my post. I was almost laughing at people coming out of the theater that were cussing about how they didn't understand it.

*****Possible spoilers*****

A lot of folks didn't realize you weren't supposed to come out of it with a warm fuzzy at the end. It's not a typical lovey-dovey, all the good guys win and the guy gets the girl and golley gee, ain't life grand, kind of movie. Too much Hollywood drekk follows this same boring line. I love that you get unsettled, uncomfortable, and unsatisfied at the end. Perfect ending too, IMO.
