No more Marion trades

I understand that everybody is so excited about adding a second player who plays winning basketball that they can't wait to be rid of the other one, but there's no point in even discussing Shawn Marion trades any more.

--It looks like the Clips will match for Q, so trading Marion leaves a gaping hole in the Suns lineup (as opposed to the less obvious hole it would leave even with Q here)

--The fact that Marion is overpaid is irrelevant now, since the Suns are finished clearing salaries and going back to their old 'big budget' ways (plus, Marion is a lot less overpaid now than he was a month ago)

--The centers that are attainable (and might be worth trading for) are all low-salary players--Marion's salary won't match theirs without a crowbar and a bunch of the other team's garbage, and even then the Suns will have to add players to match value, meaning more garbage from the other team...

--How many teams have plenty of great centers but a hole at SF? Yeah, that's what I thought

--Marion can score without having plays run for them, so he's a perfect fit with Amare and Joe Johnson on offense

--Marion will be a much better player this year (with Steve Nash and no offseason weightlifting, and hopefully with no work at PF either) so giving him up now is selling low

--Marion isn't a shutdown defender, but he's not the reason the Suns are a poor defensive team--the Pistons are the best defensive team in recent memory, and they only have two shutdown defenders in their entire rotation

--Marion seems like a good guy, and trading him away will probably decrease the other players' enthusiasm and morale

The whole business doesn't make sense any more, so y'all might as well get comfortable with Marion still being on the team.

Besides, he's a pretty good player and he's fun to watch, know what I mean? ;)

Shawn Marion lost the alley oop when Asson Kidd left, but should get it back with Steve Nash. That is worth 2-3 baskets a game, and he will score more points off fast breaks this year.

We wish. Barring a major trade, the Suns are in for heavy doses of small ball. Marion or Johnson (take your pick) will probably end up spending as much time at PF as at his natural position.

Not if Q is matched, is my guess.

We'll see, though... :(

I agree, I want to keep Marion. Hopefully we will get the #4 pick next year, and pick a stud center.

Maybe we will get a pick in 2006 to get greg oden, this guy kicks ass. Or is he elligible for next years draft? I want this guy.

I believe Charlotte gets the number 4 pick next year, just like this year.

I haven't gotten around to doing an inventory of the big men of the Western Conference yet, but unless I'm missing something it's not that encouraging. As it is, if the rumored deal of Dale Davis to the Warriors turns out to be true, that could be the last decent backup center out there.

There are several overpaid stiffs like Booth and the Kandi man available. But why bother. They are much worse than the guys the Suns discounted as overpriced in the free agent market. These deals don't look any better through bashing Marion and none of them make cap sense.

Trailor is not very good, but he may not be hugely worse than some of the overpriced stiffs being considered.

I think when the Suns signed Q, they opened the debate of a Marion trade. If the Clips match, then the debate is over.

Just wanted to give a little update on this ...

According to Paul Coro, Suns beat writer for the AZ Republic, its not a sure thing that the Clippers will match. Half of his sources have said that the Clippers will match and the other half says that they won't.

So its still tough to say at this point whats going to happen.

BTW This was from an interview on 1060 this afternoon

There are still some hidden gems out there the Suns might be able to ply from another roster without trading Marion. Brandon Haywood from the Wizards might be one. The Wizards acquired Antawn Jamison in hopes of inspiring buddy Haywood, but I hear they're not as close as the Wizards were led to believe.

Don't give up hope ...

That's a very good point. He can get his 18-20 without taking away from everyone else, especially with Nash helping him now.

What does Magloire make? What else will they put in to make it work?

Nobody in their right mind is going to trade Magloire for Shawn Marion. Mark my word.

Does anyone think the Hornets are going to move Magloire so they can start Chris Anderson?

I dont know why they would. The guy is cheap and really really good. I would think that Anderson is there becuse they think that the tractor is gone.
