No national games!

I am really upset about this. I think every team should be on national tv at least once a year. We start on the road again at detroit which is another thing that gets me upset. It seems we always start on the road. I just dont like the scheduling this year. Is it just me or do others feel this way?

I love not having any nationally televised games. With DirecTV, it doesn't matter anymore, and the top announcing crews never do their research on us anyway.

What do you expect? Barely 20,000 people even show up to the game, can you imagine what our TV ratings are?

Emmit's cool and all but it was largely viewd by the national press as a pathetic move by both parties.

On the flip side to that though, we have a fairly soft schedule, an if we make the best of it, this could set us up nicely for the future. We'll have a bunch of bandwagoners showing up to watch emmit, who deep down might actually want to root for the Cards if we put up some wins.

That is a bit of an exagerration but your point is well taken.

Barely 30,000 would be more accurate but it is still pathetic. Although I love those games. No morons rooting for the wrong team and quick lines for the b-room, beer, and food,(wait I never buy food at the games).

Maybe you guys in Phoenix don't care that there are no national games, but we in the hinterland do. I was at least hopign for one of the Saturday games in December. But, until we start to produce on the field and in the stands it ain't gonna' happen, So I have to hang out at the bar and look for my boys on the wee corner tv while the Redskins are on the big screen- that sucks bigtime. I will get the Ravens gmae though, and if we do something early maybe a doubleheader game late in th season.

jmt: direct tv and nfl ticket package in theory would cost you about the same as 16 3 hour trips to your local bar to watch the cardinals...especially if it replaces cable.. that is probably why most guys on the board are not that upset..most watch it on the dish anyway...The only people who cannot get all 16 cards games on direct tv are the people in phoenix area..and I would rather attend the games than watch them on tv anyway..

I read a post last year that said if the NFL schedulers don't put a team on a Monday Night broadcast, that they must put the team on at least one ESPN contest. I don't know if that was true or not, but it seemed like the last few years that I would see almost every team at least once on ESPN if they didn't make it on Monday night. Was that changed with the latest ESPN TV contract, or did I just read a bunch of bogus by some poster last year?

I just read a different thread that posed a similar question earlier by a few posters. If anyone knows the real answer I'd be interested in hearing it.

Preaching to the choir son. Don't complain here about attendance in SDS. Makes me want to puke. What do you suggest we do? Hijacked Phx and make them root for the Cards?

This is going to be my first season with Direct TV, so I am very excited. I've never seen all 16 Cardinal games in one season before.

I used to go to Damon's here in Virginia for the games, but unless we are playing a team with an unusually large following (Pakers, Cowboys, Giants, etc) I've been relegate.

Also, my bar tab (food included) for the 3 hour game is significantly higher than the average game price I'll be paying for Sunday Ticket.

It's gonna be a great year.

I'm thinking about splurging for DirectTV, too. I used to get to see at least two Cards games at home (against Philly) and perhaps a Sunday night or Saturday afternoon game, but it's either be at the bar every Sunday or bite the bullet.

Thing that sucks for me is that my cable company (Comcast) owns rights to the Sixers and Flyers (both of which I watch). If I get DirectTV, I can't get those games because Comcast has total control over it. So, it will have to be cable AND DirectTv. Still more economical then going to the bar though. Plus ... SOUND!

Again make the playoffs and we'll be on national tv this coming season. It's a longshot right now but it should be a goal.

hey, i'm thinking about getting directv too. i think i spent about $300-400 last year just on wings and beer watching the smallest tv with no sound. it sucked - but at least i got to see. ohw much does directv cost anyway? can i get it for just the football season? how many channels and all that? thanks!

Hate to quibble but the goal should ALWAYS be to win the Super Bowl (no matter how realistic) but I get what you are saying.

Myself, Drvnfast, Mike, are the every Sunday. Pariah frequently attends also. Hopefully D-money can find a map & get his azz down there too!!! Anyway we have a great time. There's pool tables, pinball machines, video games, & did I mention beer??? I want to get us all together for the draft , Kinda to officially kickoff this season....

I put in DirecTV 3 or 4 years ago. It's one of the best things I ever did.

The Negatives Dispelled:
I originally had to lay out serious cash to install the dish and put receivers in 2 other rooms - but the price has come down drastically.

You now get local channels via satellite in virtually every US market.

I heard one sportscaster make a big deal about having to rig your house with telephone wires. Trust me - it's no big deal. You should have a phone extension wire leading from each receiver to a phone jack. (You can buy a phone jack splitter for pennies & install it in 15 seconds. You just plug in the wire and you're in business.

The digital feed "locks up" during heavy rain storms (you may lose the signal for 4 or 5 minutes but then it pops right back).

Now for the positives -

- Buy the Sunday Ticket package for around $129 - 149 a season and you get every Cardinal game (unless you live near Phoenix and are blacked out - or you live in an away-game city that's blacked out).

- As part of my NYC local channel package, I get five PBS channels - which maximizes the amount of jazz, classical and blues concerts I can receive over PBS.

- Whereas most cable channels tend to drag their feet on new channels, DirecTV is predisposed to add new channels and ask questions later. For example - no problemo with the YES channel. And on Monday we'll get a new College Sports Channel (that most cable companies don't even know exists yet).

Bottom line - If you are an out of town Cardinal fan, you've got to have DirecTV and Sunday Ticket.

I think that the prerequisite for being on MNF (to get a guaranteed MNF game) is getting into the playoffs. The Cards got that MNF game vs. the Neeners (when Aeneas killed Steve Young) the year after they went to the playoffs. I think that all playoff teams get at least one MNF game, and teams that consistently win get more.

As for not even having a Sunday Night game, I think it has to do with the national conception (however untrue) that the Cards are just a team that isn't very entertaining, not even to their own fans. Remember the Cowboys-Cards or Cards-Lions game last season, which Boomer (Chris Berman) said was the "Worst Game Ever"? That doesn't get the networks very excited to put the squad on display.

After 2001, the Cards were supposed to be a team on the rise, and we got 2(!) nationally-televised games. That shows there's hope for the franchise, and the NFL wants to put us on TV. That, combined with good competition in Division, helps us make the case for national games. If the Cards can show that they're competitive, even if they go 5-11, but their loss differential is maybe 4-10 points, maybe with a couple of high-scoring OT games, I bet we'll get a national game next year.
