I’m sure after Murray played an unbelievable game, some people are thinking the Cards have their QB. As Lee Corso loves to say, “Not so fast, my friend.” I certainly hope they do. Murray was amazing coming back from an ACL injury. That said, I want to see more. Murray certainly answered many questions. He was mostly comfortable under center, though I thought the interception might have been caused by his hurrying his setup at the end of his drop back. His intended rollouts looked clean. His arm was strong. He used progressions & audibles. So why am I hesitant to fully endorse, as he was clearly improved. It was clear the Falcons forgot who Murray was. They rushed with reckless abandon as most teams did when Murray first arrived. After awhile teams learned to rush in a disciplined fashion, forcing Murray to beat them passing. Of course sometimes he also ran into sacks when being pressured in that fashion.
Murray is a great athlete. He has all the tools. I want to see him face a team that keeps him in the pocket and dials up the pressure. Can he retain his composure? Can he shift to create throwing lanes? Will he take a hit to complete a pass? Should he? The Falcons were exactly the type of defenders Murray has spent a career embarrassing. The Niners, for example, won’t give him that edge.
Do keep in mind this won’t easily be answered this season. The Cards still have a poor roster. This game would have looked way different if they were playing Cleveland again. To win Murray must be given more surrounding talent. The problem is you have to wait at least a year to answer if he’s the man. The Cards will have to take a leap of faith. At the moment Murray is still vastly entertaining. If teams lose their focus, he’ll best them. I’ll do a game wrap with many more observations. Just know winning wasn’t a bad thing. I also know Kingsbury should be held criminally negligent for setting back Murray’s career.
