Although the defense played a very decent game in Seattle, the lack of leadership on the offense showed in a pretty big way Sunday. The paltry 3 points put up by the offense in no way could cover the defense.
Campbell and Foote have been able to overcome the leadership losses of Abraham, and Dockett, but the loss of both Palmer and Fitzgerald on the offense might be too much for Stanton and Veldheer to account for. The fact that Ellington is getting more beat up each game only adds to the offensive woes. When you add a pretty stellar job by the Seattle defensive secondary, the 19 points put up by Seattle's offense was too much to overcome.
Still, Stanton was able to connect with John Brown for three nice completions, one of which was spectacular by Brown. The drop by Jaron Brown in the end zone, coupled by the smothering of Michael Floyd by Richard Sherman, pretty much snuffed out any flame remaining in our passing game. Not having Fitz to energize the offense with his tough 3rd down catches, and his on-field persona, began to become glaring, especially as Ellington wore down to become pretty much a non-threat on the ground.
Getting some spark and continuity into the offense is going to be the big job for head coach Bruce Arians over the next several games. Hopefully Fitzgerald will be available sooner rather than later, as without his leadership, it appears that Stanton might be over-matched when it comes to getting the offense to gell against the kind of stout competition we will be facing the rest of the way out.
One good thing we have going for us is that Seattle, San Francisco, and St. Louis all have to play each other twice. Hopefully they will beat up on each other to some extent and help us to maintain our lead in the division while we try to claw our way to a division title.
