Green has stated before that he likes guys from winning,big-time programs early in the draft because they're more NFL ready. There's no way he'll change it to take a losing QB from Vanderbilt. I can see him taking Young but there's absolutely zero chance he'll take Cutler. Culpepper was a winning QB. Look at Green's first 2 drafts here.
Fitz, Dansby,Dockett, Step all from top level schools in 2004
Rolle,Arrington,Green,Blackstock,Brown in 2005.Same thing

Why is he going to change strategy in 2006? Does Cutler really bring more to the table than a 3rd year Navarre who Green repeatedly praises? Young would at least bring another dimension and could turn into a superstar. There's just alot of questions to him. From what i've seen of Cutler at the combine and senior bowl shows me he's a product of QB hype. I would rather get our big name, big school player at 10 and take Whitehurst/Broyle/ Jacobs later in the draft. They have every bit as good a chance to be successful as Cutler.

Denny loved McCown... gone
Denny won't pursue a top rb... signed edge
denny loved Step at center... moved him to guard
Denny called Pete K one of his "core guys"... gone.

I don't think this will be a pick that Denny would make on his own. It may be a long shot but I would not completely shoot down the idea.

I think you underestimate Cutler. I'd love it if we signed him. But, hype or not, there's no way that Cutler falls to #10. I think he's gone at #3.

Personally, I'd like to see more of Navarre but I don't think the Cards trust him as their back-up QB. Yeah, I know that Green says he likes Navarre...but talk is cheap. Last year, with the season gone and everybody saying that McCown was going to be gone as well, Green left Navarre on the bench. If Coach really liked the guy, why didn't he give him the ball?

You have a reasonable theory re Green taking people from tip flight programs. But, I think Cutler is better for right now and he has the tools to do the job. Young is in need of a lot of training concerning pocket passing - a project. My pick would be Omar Jacobs. And, if I was certain he'd last to our third round pick, then he'd be the man.
It's going to depend on who is available at #10. If Davis, Huff, or Hawk are there, then no one's going to think QB. If Ngata is there, they'd have to ponder and possibly take him or trade down. If Cutler or Young is there, the Cards should get a call or two to trade the pick.

The only thing I can think of is that he wanted to win the most games possible to save his job, and McCown gave them that best chance. Of course it would have made more sense for the long term to start Navarre.

Central Florida and he led THEM to a 9-2 record with their only losses being to Purdue and Auburn.

"Denny would NEVER draft Daunte Culpepper out of Central Florida. Ever. He doesn't draft 1st round QBs, and the kid is from a small program. Won't happen. Bank on it."

I'm sure that was said quite a bit by Vikings fans leading up to the draft where Green did indeed draft Culpepper. If Cutler's there, he damn well may take him. Or he may not. Fact is we don't know, and you sound quite bad saying you do know.

Why not draft him from if he is from a small time program... He would fit right in with our small time home fan base of 19,000 by game 13 of the season.

It will NEVER make sense to start Navarre... not long term, short term or for any other reason...he will be replaced with a draft pick after we sign a real backup.

Cutler has certainly faced top flight programs and competition in the SEC. He did not come from Podunk State. I agree the Cards do not take a QB in round 1 as he will not help this year and that would appear to be a top priority for both Green and Ownership.

So is Sims LB, and Kameron Wimbley LB 3 defensive players likely 1st round, all from FSU.

This is one of many threads from that period... eerily similar to some of the same conversations we are having today.

No. Just the conversation is the exact same 5 years later. We once again are going to pass on a top QB because he is a hot head with questionable mechanics and a rocket arm just so we can give another stiff a longer look.

Meh. Mallett folds under pressure way to quickly. Now if Cam Newton is available and the Cards pass I'll agree with you.
