Noisy laptop fan?

OK this is probably one of those incredibly dumb questions but my girlfriend's laptop fan is becoming noisier and noisier. Is this a simple go to Fry's buy a new fan install it question or is it something where the fan is something you shouldn't tamper with yourself? Seems to run more often which makes me wonder is it on more because the computer is running hot, or is it running hot because the fan is malfunctioning and thus running more often?

It's about 16 months old now so it's not exactly decrepit.

Gte some compressed air and clean it out first. See if that works.

What kind of noise is it? First try to clean it out, if that doesn't work you can open the case and see if something is rubbing against it. Otherwise it might just be bad or out of balance. I have fans go out all the time

Yeah I hadn't thought of the compressed air cleanout but I'll try that first. I had figured the fan was misaligned which happens with bigger fans all the time.

thanks, I suspect the cleaning it out thing might do the trick it's probably quite dusty.

NOpe, if it's dirty it's dust neither of us smoke. Although in her old apartment we got the smell of smoke from her next door neighbor.

I ask because smoke will actually cause dust to become a sticky nasty substance that adheres to the fans. The compressed air won't do the job if that was the case. But since she doesn't smoke, you should be ok in that regard.
